INDIANAPOLIS — Veteran's Affairs in Indianapolis says multiple graves at a Confederate burial site were smeared with tar and feathers earlier this month.The VA is seeking information that could lead to the identification of those responsible for smearing tar and feathers on graves in the "Confederate Mound" section of Crown Hill Cemetery."Vandalism and defacement of federal property is a serious crime, and VA is working with law enforcement officials to identify those responsible," the department said in a statement. "VA is committed to maintaining our cemeteries as national shrines, and that includes cleaning these gravesites, which memorialize those interred at the cemetery."The vandalism was discovered on June 6. Crown Hill Cemetery groundskeeper David Deems said he believes the graves were defaced that morning because the tar was still soft when he found it.Deems said he was able to clean most of the substance off the graves, but some remnants remain.The Confederate Mound is a federally-owned national cemetery that does not belong to Crown Hill Cemetery, though it is on its property. It's been several hours since Hurricane Laura made landfall, but the storm is still delivering devastating gusts of wind to inland Louisiana.In it's 4 a.m. CT update, the National Hurricane Center downgraded Laura from a Category 4 hurricane to a Category 3 hurricane. But the storm is still delivering maximum sustained winds of 120 mph, and "unsurvivable storm surge."According to the NHC, Laura will continue to deliver hurricane-force winds to central and northern Louisiana throughout the day on Thursday. The storm will then move to the northeast, bringing heavy rain to the Missouri Valley and Ohio Valley regions on Friday and through the weekend.Laura made landfall near Cameron, Louisiana at about 1 a.m. CT on Wednesday as an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 storm with 150 mph sustained winds. The Category 4 rating makes Laura is the strongest hurricane to make landfall in Louisiana in at least 60 years, according to the National Weather Service.The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Wednesday that "Laura is expected to produce catastrophic impacts from the coast to well inland; life-threatening storm surge, extreme winds, torrential rain, flooding, and tornadoes."On early Thursday morning, NOAA's Coastal Inundation Dashboard showed storm surge warnings all across Louisiana's shoreline. The dashboard also noted that readings from Calcasieu Pass — a tributary near Cameron that flows into the Gulf of Mexico — showed that surge was recorded at about 9 feet as of 1:30 a.m. CT."Take the next few hours and get your family to a safe location," Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said at a Wednesday afternoon press conference. INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis lawyer is accused of flashing a bus carrying a girls' basketball team on two separate occasions while driving. Norwell High School girls’ basketball coach Eric Thornton said he was driving the girls to a tournament in June when a man pulled up beside their bus on I-70 near the airport and exposed himself. “He knew it was a school bus,” said Thornton. “(He) knew it was high school aged females on the bus.”The man, who police have identified as Raymond Fairchild, then exited the highway before the team could get the license plate on his Honda CRV. “The girls were horrified and just very disturbed,” said Thornton. In an attempt to identify the alleged flasher, Thornton posted a photo taken moments before the incident on social media. That post made its way to Union City where a second girls’ basketball team reported a similar incident last February – from what appeared to be the same man. “Once we found out that he’d done it before it was obvious this was a pattern,” said Thornton. It didn’t take long before someone on Facebook recognized that man as Fairchild and contacted investigators. The 71-year-old is listed as having a law office in downtown Indianapolis. “He should never be allowed to practice law again in my opinion,” said Thornton. “He should be put away for a time.”Fairchild now faces six counts of public nudity and indecency charges. His first court appearance is set for October 26. “It’s a crime against innocent, na?ve girls who just saw abnormal behavior and had no idea what would happen next,” said Thornton. “He needs to be severely punished for his behavior.”  1669
