SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The city of Santee called on residents today to help it develop a brand to market the city to tourists, businesses and potential residents.Santee recently partnered with North Star Destination Strategies to develop a marketing brand for the city. To that end, the marketing agency launched an online survey for Santee residents to give feedback on the city's strengths, weaknesses and challenges. Responses to the survey are anonymous, according to North Star Destination Strategies."We have partnered with more than 250 communities across North American and I can't emphasize enough the importance of insights gleaned from community members," North Star Founder Don McEachern said.Residents can access the survey at the city's website and submit it electronically. The survey is also available in physical form at Santee City Hall. The surveys must be submitted by Sept. 2 to be considered."It is important for us to celebrate what we love about our community and share it with others," Santee Mayor John Minto said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The county's E. coli outbreak involving children who attended the San Diego County Fair and did not wash their hands after visiting the animal exhibits stands Friday at 11 confirmed or probable cases, one of which was fatal, health officials said.County health officials have tracked E. coli cases related to the fair since June 28, when the Health and Human Service Agency announced that it had received reports of four confirmed or probable cases of the bacteria.The fair shuttered its animal exhibits the same day, after 2-year-old Jedidiah Cabezuela's death was reported, and the fair closed for the year on July 4.RELATED: Health officials report 2 new probable E. coli cases possibly tied to San Diego County Fair animalsAs of Wednesday, the number had increased to 10 confirmed cases and one probable case, all of which involve children ranging in age from 2 to 13. The county did not disclose the age or gender of the four new cases confirmed this week, but said all of the patients visited the fair's animal exhibits and petting zoos.People can avoid contracting the bacteria by thoroughly washing their hands after making contact with animals at places like farms, petting zoos and fair exhibits. Young children, older adults and people with weak immune systems are at particular risk, according to health officials.The HHSA and the California Department of Food and Agriculture collected environmental samples at the fair after the first cases were reported to confirm the bacteria's origin. However, results of the collected samples were not available prior to the fair's closure and have yet to be disclosed.County health officials repeatedly cautioned that more confirmed cases were likely despite the fair's closing due to local doctors intentionally looking for symptoms of the bacteria and its multi-day incubation period. As such, the county has not indicated that the cases are part of a larger, countywide outbreak linked to common causes like contaminated produce.While most people who contract the E. coli bacteria do not develop severe complications, roughly 5 to 10% of those who do can develop a potentially life-threatening kidney infection. Symptoms do not appear for three to four days after contraction and can include severe abdominal cramps, watery or bloody diarrhea and vomiting.Residents should promptly contact their doctor if they believe they have contracted E. coli, according to the county. 2455

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The county Board of Supervisors Tuesday unanimously approved a moratorium on evictions for both residents and small businesses located in the unincorporated area in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.The policy, which was put forward in a resolution sponsored by Supervisors Nathan Fletcher and Kristin Gaspar, will give authority to the county's chief administrative officer to work with financial institutions to halt foreclosures and foreclosure-related evictions; and allow the county Housing Authority to extend the deadline for recipients, including those who receive Section 8 support.Fletcher said the proposal will provide relief for four months, up to May 31. The protections are provided retroactively to March 4, when Gov. Gavin Newsom proclaimed a state of emergency over the pandemic.Fletcher said the resolution "is a prudent step to protect folks in a period of economic distress."The supervisors voted remotely, abiding by the social distancing guidelines established by health officials to prevent further spread of the virus. County staff members, including Chief Executive Officer Helen-Robbins- Meyer, were in board chambers but kept their distance from one another.The county resolution does include one change, in terms of the amount of time renters have to inform their landlord about their economic situation, from 15 days to one week.Gaspar said that change will align the county with the city of San Diego's policy. She said that as a land owner and tenant, she's "sensitive to all sides of this proposal.""I believe we need to give the most vulnerable the tools they need," she added.Supervisor Dianne Jacob said while she fully supported the resolution, it was also important to protect landlords, and that she wanted to hear from rental property owners in her district. However well-intended, there can be unintended consequences from such a proposal to help renters, Jacob said.Before approving the resolution, supervisors heard from residents, most of whom were in favor.Real estate and property owner representatives said while they support relief for people in financial distress, it was also important to work with renters who could afford to pay. Mitch Thompson, of the Pacific Southwest Association of Realtors, said the resolution could impact between .5 billion and billion in rental income, and affect people like him and his wife. Thompson said they are retired, and rely on property income.He added that he didn't know if the county had "sat down with any property owners" before crafting the proposal. Cardboard cutouts of players' family members and loved ones will be placed in the seats behind home plate.With the absence of fans all 30 MLB teams will use ambient background audio to create crowd sounds during the season. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher joined local Black leaders Friday to announce a three-pronged "Racial Justice and Law Enforcement Realignment Policy Package" which the Board of Supervisors will consider Tuesday.The three policies in the package involve strengthening the Citizen's Law Enforcement Review Board's authority and independence, opening an Office of Equity and Racial Justice for San Diego County and launching Mobile Crisis Response Teams that uses clinicians instead of law enforcement for mental health and homeless services.Paving Great Futures, ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties, Urban League of San Diego County, the Racial Justice Coalition of San Diego, BAPAC, SD for Justice Coalition, Pillars of the Community, the Black Chamber and Voice of Youth all offered input on the package, which seeks to "create more transparency and start to change the systemic and structural racism that has caused pain and harm to generations of Black people," according to a statement from Fletcher's office."The organizations and activists we worked with have been fighting to save Black lives, and advocating for these changes for a long time. Now is the time for real change," Fletcher said. "These proposals are initial steps in a series of system and culture changes that needs to occur for there to be true equity in treatment by law enforcement and other injustices felt by minority populations in our community."Fletcher launched a petition drive to support the policy package, and was joined at a news conference on the steps of the County Administration Center by Buki Domingos, founder of Racial Justice Coalition of San Diego; Ellen Nash, chair of the board of Black American Political Association of California; Khalid Alexander, president and founder of Pillars of the Community; and Maresa Talbert, co-chair of San Diegans for Justice.Community leaders offered words of encouragement for the policies."The Urban League of San Diego County Supports these reforms brought forward by Supervisor Nathan Fletcher to bring much needed racial justice reform and law enforcement oversight to the people of San Diego," said Al Abdallah, chief operating officer, Urban League of San Diego County.Fletcher's office outlined some of the direct policies the package would take if passed as designed.To strengthen the Citizen's Law Enforcement Review Board, the package said independence from the County Sheriff would be needed, as well as independent authority to investigate use-of-weapons and use-of-force claims.For the Office of Equity and Racial Justice, Fletcher said the county would have to involve communities of color to set policy and budget priorities, secure and administer restorative justice programs and "dismantle systemic barriers that present obstacles based on race."Last, for the Mobile Crisis Response Teams, the county would need to set up a help line, launch an outreach campaign and dedicate million annually of the county's Health and Human Services Agency budget toward the teams.The County Board of Supervisors will consider the policy proposals at its regular meeting at 9 a.m. Tuesday. 3167
