But a lawyer for the stylist says the owner gave permission for the appointment and made “vitriolic and incendiary comments" about Pelosi. SAN DIGEO (KGTV) - A former San Diegan who lives 3 miles from the site of a deadly, massive explosion in Beirut, Lebanon, is describing the terrifying moments of the blast. Elie Shammas and his family were inside their 6-story Beirut apartment. It all began just after 6pm, and it felt like an earthquake."In San Diego, feels like a rumble, but this was a jittery," said Shammas.Shammas, who taught at SDSU a decade ago, says all his locked windows swung open."The whole house was moving, and then the shock wave hit us. It was very loud. Outside, it was all dusty. I have three kids, who were jittery and scared," said Shammas.Shammas raced downstairs and snapped a photo of a huge smoke plume. Shammas says he can't help but recall Lebanon's bloody civil war."I lived through Lebanon through the war. I'm used to bombings and shellings, and this was like nothing I've seen before," said Shammas.Across the world, in San Diego, news of the blast hitting the Lebanese community hard."Just a shock. When you see it, you can't believe it's happening," said Shammas.Nabi Geha, who owns La Miche Kabobgee in Kearny Mesa, immediately called his niece and a cousin, who both live about four miles from the blast site. Both are okay but shaken."They woke up to huge impact. Their buildings were shaken. Cars lifted from one side street and thrown to other side," said Geha.Geha's anxiety over his family still lingers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— The City of San Diego announced Friday it would be shutting down its reservoirs an additional weekday each month in response to a 3 percent citywide budget cut.10News heard complaints from Steve Gordenker and his buddies, all regulars at El Capitan Reservoir. “The summer months, I am here Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, every weekend,” Gordenker said. As competitive freestyle jet skiers, El Capitan is their home turf.“More time on the water equals results,” Gordenker said. When the City of San Diego announced it would be closing El Capitan on the first Friday of every month, they were devastated. “If we are not able to come on Fridays, then that limits us to two days a week,” Gordenker said. “And the problem is this is our only freshwater lake in San Diego County.”Their only other option is to visit San Diego Bay. Gordenker said salt water is much harsher on their jet skis and makes it costly to maintain. That is why they chose to practice at the freshwater reservoir.El Capitan is one of eight city-operated reservoirs that will be closed an additional weekday, starting July 1.The closures are as follows:Barrett – Closed the first Wednesday of each month.El Capitan – Closed the first Friday of each month (starting August 1, 2019)Hodges – Closed the third Wednesday of each month.Miramar – Closed the first Tuesday of each month.Murray – Closed the second Tuesday of each month.Otay, Lower and Upper – Closed the second Wednesday of each month.San Vicente – Closed the second Friday of each month.Sutherland – Closed the third Friday of each month.“It doesn’t even really make any sense,” El Capitan concessions manager Stacy Foster said.Foster works for an independent contractor, Rocky Mountain Recreation. They provide concessions for most of the city’s reservoirs. If the lakes close, Foster doesn’t get paid. “If they still have to pay the city workers and they are losing the revenue of the people that are coming in, they are not saving any money. They are losing money,” Foster said. According to a city spokesman, maintenance and water staff will keep their hours because their duties fall under a separate budget. However, recreation-related workers will be affected by the closures because their duties fall under the 3 percent general fund budget cuts.Out of the eight reservoirs, El Capitan is the only one to close starting in August.“It is going to start in July for the other lakes, but here we were able to push it to August because it’s Fourth of July weekend,” said Foster.Foster said their lake keeper was able to negotiate the start date since the closure would have fallen under one of the busiest weekends of the year. Still, she is worried that the sudden change in schedule will inconvenience regulars. “When they have a truck and a trailer with a boat on it, there is no place for them to turn around back there, so it is going to be a mess,” Foster said, pointing toward the gate.As for Gordenker, he said he is disappointed. But he said it could be worse. “They could turn the whole program off if they wanted, so we are fortunate to at least have two days.”The closures are in effect for the next year. 3174

SAN DIEGO (KGTV): A program in San Diego is making it easier for military families and veterans to get the help they need to fight food insecurity.Courage 2 Call offers food giveaways twice a month to anyone with a military ID or any veteran."We don’t have any criteria for them to go through the line," says program coordinator Angela Nagel. "They just have had to serve. We don’t look at status. We don’t look at discharge status. We don’t look at income. If you have a VA card, if you have a military id, come to courage to call we will get you set up with the resources in San Diego."The program focuses on giving out fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as other pantry staples. Nagel says, at any given event, they'll serve up to 200 people."It breaks my heart to know that these military families have to go through our lines to get food," says Nagel. "I know for active duty it is a struggle to live in San Diego because of how expensive it is here. For active duty, they should not have to be going through these lines, but they do."Food insecurity has been called a "hidden epidemic" in the military. The San Diego Hunger Coalition says that 1 in 10 people who go to food banks have a military member in their family. The Coalition says low wages for enlisted members make it difficult to keep food on the table.Courage 2 Call is one of several military-focused programs that receive food from Feeding San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Three healthcare-related offices were burglaries early Thursday morning, where criminals got away with cash and prescription pills. At 2:00 am, San Diego Police Officers arrived at the Cos-medic Inc. Plastic Surgery Clinic in Bankers Hill, to find a smashed glass window. They said burglars got away with an unknown amount of money. At 4:15 am, dispatchers sent officers to the Kaiser Permanente Pharmacy in Clairemont Mesa, after the front door was broken in. Nothing was taken. Just 20 minutes later, police said criminals shattered the back glass window at the Carmel Valley Pharmacy. The owners immediately contacted the local Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to notify that the burglars took 600 tablets of Adderall, worth up to ,000 in street value. "This is one of the drugs we see that are highly abused by high school and college students...What they perceive to be a study-aid," DEA Special Agent in Charge, Colin Ruane said. The Schedule-2 narcotic often lands in the hands of our youth, which can have deadly consequences. "In this country, we lose 70,000 people who die of drug overdoses every year," Special Agent Ruane said. "This is just another symptom of the major problem and the major addiction issue we have in the country. They wouldn't be stealing these drugs if there wasn't somebody willing to buy them."San Diego police said there appeared to be no connection between the burglary at the plastic surgery office and the others. However, after our inquiry, the Department said they are working with the DEA to look for a possible connection between the two pharmacy burglaries. They are also helping the owners get back on their feet."We will give them suggestions on additional security measures, make sure they are in compliance," Special Agent Ruane said. "Then, use any additional information from this case and others, in working with the San Diego Police Department to try and find these people who committed this burglary and put them in jail."The DEA reminds the community that they can help keep drugs out of the wrong hands by participating in "National Drug Take-Back Day" on October 26, 2019.
