UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met here Thursday with Bill Gates, chairman of Bill & Gates Foundation, to discuss issues concerning development and poverty alleviation.     During their talks on the sidelines of the a high-level U.N. meeting for Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Wen expressed appreciation over Gates' long-term efforts for promoting settlement of issues concerning development.     The current turbulence in the international economic and financial situation, sharp increases in oil prices and food supplyshortage have made things more difficult for poor countries, Wen said. BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- China will give more efforts to strengthen quality supervision of dairy products in rural areas, said Chen Deming, the minister of commerce, on Wednesday.     "The Ministry of Commerce (MOC) always gives food product supervision in vast rural areas a priority, although it is not an easy job to carry out as in urban areas," said Chen.     Chen said the MOC has urged local authorities to take tangible measures to regulate and stabilize the dairy markets in such areas.     The local governments were asked to launch strict supervision and inspection over dairy products in rural shops, enterprises and wholesale markets. Tainted milk products should be removed from shelves in time.     "The MOC will continue to work together with local governmental organs to ensure a sound market order, and help farmers get more knowledge about dairy products," said Chen.     Meanwhile, Chen noted the country should adopt concrete measures to lift consumer's confidence. "The government should enhance inspection over product quality, while enterprises should take on more social responsibility."     China's food quality has been criticized recently, as 13,000 infants nationwide were hospitalized with kidney problems and at least three were killed after drinking baby formula tainted with melamine. The chemical, which was added illegally, makes the protein content of milk appear higher than it actually is.     After the Sanlu formula's problem exposure, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine conducted a nationwide examination of baby milk powder to find 22 companies whose formulas were tainted.

CHENGDU, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao called the past 110 days since the May 12 quake "shocking and touching" when speaking to journalists in southwest China's quake-hit Sichuan Province on Tuesday.     "The past 110 days were days that shocked our minds, and also days that touched our hearts," said Wen. "It's not a long time, but what we did, as witnessed by people all over the world, will go down in history." No major epidemics were reported and industry and agriculture basically resumed.     The nation also demonstrated a kind of great spirit in the quake rescue and relief efforts and gained plenty of precious experiences in coping with emergencies, Wen said. "These will be more everlasting in the quake zone and in our hearts."     Citing soldiers rescuing life around the clock, volunteers taking care of survivors and local people helping each other, Wen expressed his appreciation for all the merits demonstrated on the rescuers and survivors.     Wen said the rebuilding of houses and infrastructures remained the most urgent and difficult task for relief work, citing that it took more than 100 days to fully repair the trunk road linking quake-hit Dujiangyan and Wenchuan and it required no less to keep it open as aftershocks continued to trouble the areas.     According to Wen, in October a nationwide campaign will be launched on donating clothes and quilts to the quake zone to help people there spend winter "safe and sound".     He vowed the central government would continue the relief work as best as it can along with local governments and residents.

FUZHOU, July 27 (Xinhua) -- A total of 274,300 people had been evacuated by Sunday afternoon in southeast China's Fujian Province as a strong typhoon was approaching, said the provincial flood control headquarters.     About 52,301 fishing boats had also returned to harbor as of 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. Disaster relief personnel had been helping people on fishing vessels get on shore, said Yang Zhiying, head of the flood control headquarters in Fujian.     Typhoon Fung Wong, the eighth tropical storm of this year, turned into a strong typhoon at 8:00 p.m. Its eye was monitored at the sea about 210 kilometers to the east of Taitung County in Taiwan, according to the provincial observatory.     It moved westward and was forecast to land Taiwan on Sunday night or Monday morning. MIANYANG, Sichuan, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Ten days after the devastating earthquake in southwest China, six days after he returned to Beijing, Premier Wen Jiabao was back on the front lines of quake relief.     He flew to Mianyang in Sichuan Province, one of the worst hit cities, on Thursday afternoon. Upon arrival, he conducted a fly-over inspection by helicopter of a "quake lake," which is formed by landslides that block rivers.     People would have found him on the same tight schedule early this year as Wen visited the regions hit by the worst winter weather in 50 years four times in nine days.     The Hong Kong-based daily Ta Kung Pao said in a commentary: "Chinese premiers have developed an image of being caring and conscientious since late Zhou Enlai, the first premier of the People's Republic of China."     When a 6.8-magnitude earthquake rocked Xingtai, in the northern Hebei Province in 1966, Zhou rushed to the region and oversaw relief work, risking aftershocks, Du Xiuxian, a photographer of Zhou's era, recalled in his published photographic memoir "The Last Legends."     Wen has inherited that tradition of Chinese premiership. The campaign, whose organizer is unknown, aims to collect 1 million prayer text messages.     A compilation of scenes of Wen's visit to Sichuan is popular on-line and Netizens have created a forum called "Premier Wen, we love you."     "As one of China's senior leaders, the premier not only manages the government's daily work but also displays the ruling party's ideals and principles personally," Ta Kung Pao said.
