Presidential candidate Joe Biden spoke out on Wednesday on the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Blake was shot by police in Wisconsin on Sunday, causing unrest in Kenosha.Two officers from the incident have been placed on administrative leave. But protesters are calling for the officers to be fired and criminally charged for the shooting.Biden confirmed that he has talked to the Blake Family about the shooting.“What I saw on that video makes me sick,” Biden said. “Once again, a black man, Jacob Blake, been shot by the police in the broad daylight, the whole world watching”Biden said he told the Blake Family that “justice must and will be done.”While Biden applauded the protests, he decried the violence surrounding the protests. The violence culminated on Tuesday in the fatal shooting of two people. Police in Illinois arrested a 17-year-old in connection to the shootings.“As I said after George Floyd's murder, protesting brutality is a right and absolutely necessary, but burning down communities is not protest,” Biden said. “It's needless violence. Violence that endangers lives, violence that guts businesses and shutters businesses that serve the community. That's wrong. In the midst of this pain, the wisest words that I've heard spoken so far have come from Julia Jackson, Jacob's mother. She looked at the damage done in her community and she said this, quote ‘This doesn't reflect my son or my family. So let's unite, and heal, do justice, end the violence, and systemic racism in this country now.’Protests are expected to continue in Kenosha on Wednesday. President Donald Trump said that the state’s governor had accepted help from the National Guard, but the state’s governor, Democrat Tony Evers, said that he had not agreed to National Guard assistance, but would welcome federal assistance in a support role. 1859

President Trump is planning to meet with the family of Spc. Vanessa Guillen on July 29 prior to the #IamVanessaGuillen bill being released.The family is planning to introduce the bill to Congress on July 30. The family will also hold a press conference.The family says the bill would protect soldiers to make sure what happened to Spc. Guillen doesn't happen again.Spc. Guillen's remains were found last week near the Leon River in Texas.The soldier went missing from Fort Hood back in April.Her family believes Vanessa was sexually harassed by Spc. Aaron Robinson. Fort Hood officials say Robinson was the military suspect and died by suicide.Cecily Anne Aguilar, a civilian, was arrested and charged in connection to Vanessa's disappearance. Researchers are trying to find new ways to get younger people to donate blood as the pandemic pushes the country's blood supply to critically low levels.The donor pool is aging and younger people aren't stepping up to fill the gaps.For decades, the supply has relied on donors being motivated simply to help others.A recent study looked at the idea of paying people to give blood, something already being done for plasma donations, but not for whole blood. The study found about 80% of college age people would be willing to give blood if they were paid.“A concern might be that payment leads people to be externally motivated to give blood, that they're doing it for the money,” said Christopher France, a psychology professor at Ohio University. “But people are by and large doing this at the beginning because they're also feeling very altruistic. The reality is, we can hold two ideas in our head at the same time. We can say, ‘oh it's nice to get paid for this,’ but we also recognize that we're doing something for our fellow human beings.”France says one way to address that concern is to offer donors options on what to do with the payment. They could keep it or donate it to charity.There's also concerns over getting donors to keep coming back. Payment and reducing fears could help with that.“Not only does reducing fear reduce the risk of feeling faint while they give blood, so they feel better if they have their fear reduced, but it also increases their odds of coming back to give blood again,” said France.In March, the surgeon general made a national plea for more blood donations.Demographic data from a major Texas center suggests the emergency appeal did not help close the age gap. 1711
