SHAVER LAKE, Calif. (AP) — More than 200 people were airlifted to safety after a fast-moving wildfire trapped them in a popular camping area in California's Sierra National Forest. The California Office of Emergency Services said Black Hawk and Chinook helicopters were used for the rescues that began Saturday night and continued overnight. At least two people were severely injured and 10 more suffered moderate injuries. The Creek Fire exploded in size amid sweltering temperatures Saturday and chewed through extremely dry vegetation, cutting off evacuation routes to Mammoth Pool Reservoir. The area northeast of Fresno is a popular weekend getaway. 662

Since motorists stayed off the road during the Thanksgiving holiday due to the coronavirus pandemic, gasoline sales in the United States during the holiday week fell to its lowest level since 1997.According to an IHS Markit Oil Price Information Service survey (OPIS), gas consumption fell 8.4%, or about 185 million gallons, from the previous week ending Nov. 28.Demand for motor fuel was down 19.3% compared to 2019, OPIS said.IHS Markit executive director Tom Kloza warns that the market could still get worse by year's end as more and more Americans decide to reduce holiday travel due to COVID-19."We're heading toward a 90-day period where gasoline demand gets further crimped by winter weather and post-holiday cocooning," Kloza said in a press release. "By January, we may regularly see demand numbers not witnessed since the last century."OPIS said some regions saw gasoline sales decline by more than 20% last year during Thanksgiving week.Gasoline sales in the midwest were down 23.3% compared to last year, while New Jersey was the hardest-hit state, with gasoline volumes plunging almost 30% from 2019, OPIS said. 1134
Sparked by new records in California, Florida and Texas, Wednesday marks the most recorded coronavirus cases in a single day in the United States.Data compiled by Johns Hopkins University generally is not updated until the following morning, but official state-by-state data shows at least 37,000 new reported cases on Wednesday. That figure would make for the most cases reported in a single day, according to Johns Hopkins University data. The Atlantic’s COVID Tracking Project confirms a record of more than 38,000 US cases on Wednesday. The three largest US states set new records on Wednesday:California 7,149Florida 5,508Texas 5,489While Arizona did not set a new record on Wednesday, it did see a record for hospitalizations since the start of the pandemic. The reported cases is only a snapshot of the spread in the US, as there is a lag time between the onset of cases and when they’re reported to state departments of health. While President Donald Trump has suggested the rise in cases is due to an increase in testing, that alone does not explain the surge in cases in Florida, Texas and California.“Testing of course means finding cases, that is why we test,” said Dr. Ali Mokdad, Chief Strategy Officer for Population Health at the University of Washington. “But the increase in cases that we report is adjusted for testing and in many places we see a rise of cases due to increased spreading of the virus and not testing. We see a rise in Florida, California, and Texas that are true increases in cases. In other states, like NY, for example, they tested about 60K and now their % positive is coming down.”Tuesday marked the most recorded coronavirus cases in the US in nearly two months as cases dropped off in May amid stay at home orders. But with stay at home orders lifted throughout the US, cases have increased quickly. 1845
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is demanding the Federal Aviation Administration increase inspections of aircraft maintenance after his office reviewed agency records and found that enforcement and fines specifically for maintenance issues have dropped over the last several years.Schumer's office asserts that formal enforcement actions for airline maintenance issues decreased after 2014 and dropped dramatically in 2017. The data was compiled from the agency's quarterly reports on civil enforcement penalties, according to a statement from his office. The New York Democrat said the decline in maintenance enforcement raises serious concerns about whether the FAA is meeting its oversight mandates. He demanded the agency examine the data and report back on why that enforcement has decreased. 809
