JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) - The Valley Fire claimed the home of a 78-year-old Jamul woman Saturday, along with many of her beloved animals.Cellphone video shot by Pat Menzies shows a thick wall of smoke over a ridge, as he drove his mother Eileen from her home, and away from the fast-moving flames of the Valley Fire on Saturday. Around 2 pm, Eileen says she had only minutes to pack a few things, grab her three dogs and get out of her home on Prairie Drive."We were afraid it was going to come fast, especially since there were no planes, helicopters and fire engines there," said Eileen.Eileen says brushfires have gotten within a half-mile of her home in the past, but this felt different."i just had a gut feeling this one was going to take me out," said Eileen.The fear turned into reality, as Eileen and her daughter discovered when they got back on the property the next day. Eileen's trailer home of 17 years was burned to the ground. All her family heirlooms and almost all her possessions were gone."I felt numb because there was nothing I could do. It's going to be tough to get back online," said Eileen.On the day she learned what happened to her home, the toughest part was her search for her animals, in various pens and cages. Her goat, duck, turkey and three of 12 peacocks, were all found dead."It was sad because they were trapped. The turkey, duck and goats were my babies, and they're not with me anymore," said Eileen.That sadness hanging over Eileen as she begins her road to recovery. She knows it will be a long one."Constantly running into new chapters in your life ... I'm 78 and starting over," said Eileen.Eileen's home was insured. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A group of St. Teresa’s Academy (Missouri) students were suspended following a Snapchat that showed them posing with beer pong cups arranged in a swastika.The picture, which was taken at a gathering off-campus during after-school hours, contained the caption, “Girls night!”The incident was met with outrage from alumni of the private, all-girls Catholic high school in Brookside.“Multiple people that I went to school with at St. Teresa's had posted on Facebook about it,” explained Maggie Henehan, who graduated from the school in 2008. “I was very disturbed and surprised."Alumni told Kansas City-based KSHB that the girls involved allegedly received a one day in-school suspension, which required them to write to their future colleges about the incident.“I feel that it was very lenient. I was surprised,” explained Henehan. “I remember people getting harsher punishments for getting caught drinking or being caught drinking outside of campus."In a statement sent to KSHB, the school said it was unable to report every detail of the case due to privacy and legal issues.However, the statement noted how the school conducted an investigation into the matter.“A group of STA students were drinking alcohol and participating in a beer drinking game. A picture of their activity, which was unrelated to any school sponsored event, took place off school property and after school hours, was posted on social media. The beer drinking game involved the placement of cups in a sequence resembling a hateful symbol,” the statement read. “Upon the incident being brought to our attention, STA leadership undertook an internal, as well as external investigation. We investigated the underage drinking as well as the potential for racial discrimination. We also involved the Kansas City Missouri Police Department.”After looking into the case, the school said penalties were handed down to the students involved.“Internal and external investigations concluded that this is a case of inappropriate and unlawful underage drinking,” the statement read. “After careful and complete review by the STA senior administrative team and in accordance with school policies, the students involved were disciplined.”The school did not comment on the specific penalties the students received.Moving forward, Henehan hoped the school would take a more aggressive stance against racism.“I hope that St Teresa's will step up and do what they need to do to make sure everyone feels welcome and everyone feels safe,” she explained. “It's definitely an opportunity for growth. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A family is shaken after a man attacked and tied them up inside their home so he could rob them.Jason Hance, 34, is charged with two counts of kidnapping, two counts of robbery, four counts of armed criminal action and a single count of burglary.The Shults family remains baffled over what Hance did to them Monday night.Police said the man from Russell, New York broke into the Shults's house through a basement window, went upstairs and right into Trina's path. "He grabbed my hand with a knife in it and told me to shut the f*** up and come with him," Trina Shults told Kansas City-based KSHB on Wednesday. She said Hance dragged her around the house while her husband, Eric, was walking the dog. "He put me in a chair and he put my own apron — a jean fabric apron — over my head and then tied my own hairdryer around my neck," Trina Shults said.When Eric walked in, he thought someone was playing a cruel joke.  "And then when I found he was serious I was like, 'What the heck?' So, of course, my wife says, 'Honey, do what he says, do what he says,'" Eric Shults said. He said Hance threw a blanket over his head and tied his legs to a chair using a mop cord, then went on to ransack their home. "Every cabinet, every door in my home for an hour and a half," Trina Shults said.They told KSHB the suspect said he was looking to sell their items to get money for a hotel room and for his 14-month-old daughter with a heart condition. As to why he chose their particular house?"He was walking up the street, we have a Ford Escape, and he says, 'I saw the Escape. I wanted to escape from my problems. There's the house I need to target,'" Eric Shults said. As Hance was loading up the stolen goods into the Escape he encountered the Shults's son and niece. "He's like, 'I have your parents tied up inside if you go now you can save them.' And I said, 'Are you serious?' And he pulls a hammer and he's like, 'Yes, I'm serious. Drop your phone,'" said Austin Shults, the victims' son.Police traced one of the victim's cell phones to a motel off of Highway 40. Officers found Hance and several of the stolen items inside one of the rooms. Since the incident, the Shults have installed an alarm system. "Why is it that someone off the street feels compelled to come in into our home and take things that don't belong to them? Get a job. Go earn your own things. You're not entitled to mine," Trina Shults said.The suspect, Jason Hance, made his first appearance in court Wednesday afternoon. His bond is set at 0,000. Hance's next court date is set for April 12 at 1:30 p.m. at the Criminal Justice Center. 2748

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The man whose wife was found dismembered in two ice coolers has been charged in connection with dismembering and abandoning her body. Justin Rey is accused of abandonment of a corpse and endangering the welfare of a child.  Lenexa police officers went to U-Haul on October 24 to check on Rey and his two children, who were reportedly sleeping in a storage unit. During the investigation, a woman’s remains were found in the unit. Court documents officially identified the remains as Rey’s wife. The documents said Rey’s wife, who family identified as Jessica Monteiro Rey, was found dismembered in coolers. According to court records, Rey was dragging several containers at the U-Haul facility when police spoke to him. Rey told officers his wife died after childbirth several days earlier, and her body was in the two containers. Court documents said Rey told police he spent two days with his wife’s body before dismembering her. Rey told detectives his two children were in the hotel room as he dismembered and disposed of his wife’s body. Prosecutors requested a bond of 0,000 cash. Rey is in custody in Johnson County. The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office said the case remains under investigation.  1281

KENOSHA — In his first time speaking publicly since his arrest, Kyle Rittenhouse told the Washington Post that he "would have died that night" if he hadn't brought a gun to a Kenosha protest where law enforcement officials say he shot and killed two men.Unrest broke out in Kenosha following the Aug. 23 police shooting of Jacob Blake. Police said Rittenhouse, 17, is charged with the homicides of two men during the night of Aug. 25.
