SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After losing her son in 2015, a San Diego mother devoted herself to making sure all veterans and fallen service members were honored. Brenda Kaesler says she first learned about Wreaths Across America (WAA) when she laid her son Jeffrey to rest. "He had the best smile of anyone I've ever seen. He just lit up the room. And of course that's a mother talking, but other people have said the same thing!" said Brenda. Brenda says Jeffrey suffered a traumatic brain injury in Iraq, which lead to a brain aneurysm and his death several years later. "He wanted to help, and after he got out, he said he would go back and do it all over again, just like so many of them do." Each year the nonprofit raises money to put wreaths on the graves of veterans and fallen service members. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Amid ongoing dockless scooter injuries, Mayor Kevin Faulconer Thursday proposed new rules for the devices.The new rules would force companies that provide the dockless scooters to educate riders, provide data to the city, enforce speed limits and purchase permits.Riders would also be required to sign away any of the city’s legal liability should something happen.Speed limits would need to be enforced by the companies using “geofencing technology,” Faulconer said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A woman involved in a fiery multi-vehicle crash in the College Area on Wednesday died several hours after being taken to the hospital.Casey Diane Hargis, 22, was pronounced dead at UCSD Medical Center on Thursday morning, after a vehicle slammed into the Ford Fusion she was in as it was stopped at an intersection the night before.Hargis and the driver, a 22-year-old woman, were both taken to the hospital suffering from second- and third-degree burns on more than 70% of their bodies, along with internal bleeding.RELATED: Several hurt in multi-vehicle crash at College Area intersectionHargis died of vascular injuries from pelvic fractures, according to the county medical examiner's report.The condition of the driver has not been officially released.Wednesday, a 63-year-old man was driving in his Mercedes when he suffered an unknown medical issue and slammed into the back of the Ford that Hargis was traveling in at 70th Street and El Cajon Blvd.The force of the crash pushed both vehicles into the opposite lanes of El Cajon Blvd, where they were struck by three other vehicles, causing the Ford to ignite and leaving the women trapped inside before witnesses could pull them from the vehicle.The Mercedes driver was taken to the hospital for treatment, but his condition wasn't immediately released. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A team of middle school students from Oak Valley Middle School in 4S Ranch has won a national competition in cybersecurity.Coached by Paul Johnson, a senior systems engineer at Northrop Grumman, the students learn how to catch and protect against hackers. During competitions, hackers attempt to breach networks, while the students try to identify and eject them. Called "CyberPatriot", the national championship was held in Baltimore, Maryland.The goal of the program is to get kids interested in potential careers in cybersecurity.The Poway Unified School District has CyberPatriot teams at Design 39 School and Del Norte High School, in addition to Oak Valley Middle School. 715

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Among the safety measures schools are now employing is a device invented by a retired San Diego teacher that was never designed for the use.Rick Morris taught elementary school for three decades before leaving to focus on books to help educators with inventions.In 2005, Morris designed the Lock Blok, an updated version of a device he invented in the 80s. Applied with an adhesive, a rubber tab is affixed to the door and can be pushed out, again acting like a stopper. It was designed to cut down on noisy door slams in class.Morris says after the Columbine shooting, schools started using the Lock Blok for safety.  Most class doors have to be locked from the outside. With Morris' invention, teachers could just keep the door locked all day, even with the Lock Blok engaged. In an active shooter situation, the tab is pulled back, while the door shuts and is automatically locked.Security experts tell us during a true emergency, fine motor reflexes becomes tested. If a teacher has to go outside and try to lock the door with a key, it could take precious seconds.  Over the years, some 8000 Lock Blok units have been installed by local schools.  "My reaction is if this is helping to make a campus more secure, good for you, but don't put all your hope in one device.
