XI' AN, July 16(Xinhua) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived in Xi'an, capital of northwest China' Shaanxi Province, Friday night to continue her China visit.During Merkel'stay in Xi'an, she'll attend a forum with Chinese and German business leaders and meet with provincial leaders.The visit will also take her to some historic sites, including the Terra-cotta Warriors, the Great Mosque at Huajue Lane as well as a local motor company.Merkel is on her fourth China visit since taking office. BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- China's Health Ministry on Saturday called for heightened measures against the possible spread of bird flu virus after a woman in central China died from the disease on June 3.The ministry urged health authorities at all levels to increase prevention and control measures on respiratory diseases as the country's southern areas are entering into the peak flu season.Health authorities at all levels, especially in Shanghai and Guangzhou, host cities respectively for the 2010 World Expo and the Asian Games, were asked to formulate emergency plans to cope with the possible spread of the disease, according to a notice posted on the ministry website.Health authorities at all levels should report and respond quickly to unidentifiable pneumonia, it said, adding they should also prepare medical equipment and pharmaceuticals to cope with possible outbreaks of respiratory diseases, such as bird flu.Health authorities in Shanghai, Guangzhou, quake-hit Yushu in Qinghai Province and southern provinces plagued by floods were also asked to coordinate the assistance of experts to take effective measures on disease prevention and control.

BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- China's consumer price index (CPI), one of the main gauges of inflation, will peak in August before starting to fall in the following months of the year, an economist said Sunday."The CPI is likely to surpass 3.3 percent in August but that will be the highest level for the year," said Lian Ping, chief economist at Shanghai-based Bank of Communications.He said commodity prices will remain relatively low in the short term as market concern about a weak economic recovery linger and as the European debt crisis spreads.Chinese inflation will also ease due to China's slower economic growth rates and a fall in the price of industrial goods, Lian added.However, long-term inflationary pressures cannot be ruled out, due to potential rises in the cost of food, labor and natural resources, he said.Lian said he expects inflationary pressures to grow in March and April next year.Largely on the back of rising food prices after widespread flooding wrecked crops and disrupted shipping, China's July CPI rose 3.3 percent from a year earlier, the fastest rate since October 2008.The CPI for the first seven months of the year stood at 2.7 percent, below the whole-year target of 3 percent.
