(KGTV) — A firefighter battling the CZU Lightning Complex Fire in Northern California had his wallet stolen out of his vehicle and bank account drained, officials say.According to Cal Fire, the firefighter was on the ground directing crews when someone entered his department vehicle and stole his personal belongings, including his wallet. Officials say the firefighter's bank account was later drained."That's the extent that these people have gone, again, this is why we've asked for people to evacuate. It's saddening, it's sickening, and we're doing everything we can to try and help the community and unfortunately, this happened," Cal Fire Chief Mark Brunton said.The fire, which has burned 74,000 acres in San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties, is only 8% contained Sunday night. One person has died in the blaze.Officials on Sunday morning urged residents still in the evacuation zone to leave the area if they hadn't already, in part to keep crews focused on fighting the fire, saving homes, and deterring criminal behavior.About 1,300 personnel have been responding to the devastating fire, as it threatens 24,000 structures. At least 115 structures have been destroyed and 77,000 people have been evacuated from the area.On Friday, Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Department said five people were arrested and charged with looting, grand theft, burglary, and conspiracy to commit a crime in the area.Cal Fire warned Sunday that there was also a fraudulent GoFundMe account circulating that claimed to be raising money for the firefighter whose belongings were stolen. "It's absolutely disgusting behavior. Frankly, I can't believe that somebody would have the nerve to break into a firefighter's vehicle, or enter their vehicle, to steal something from them when they're there to protect the community," said Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Chris Clark. 1885

(KGTV) - In her new book, Elizabeth Smart says the man who kidnapped her also tried to kidnap a girl in El Cajon, California by posing as Mormon and befriending the girl’s family, according to People Magazine.Smart detailed Brian David Mitchell’s alleged plan in When There’s Hope: Healing, Moving Forward, and Never Giving Up. The book includes information about Smart’s abduction in 2002, when she was 14 years old. Smart was held captive by Mitchell and Wanda Barzee for nine months.Before Smart’s kidnapping, Mitchell deliberately went to a Mormon church in East County to find a girl to victimize, Smart wrote. He eventually saw a photo of a girl on a family’s piano, she said.Smart did not indicate which Latter-Day Saints church Mitchell may have attended. The girl's identity was not made public.“That was all it took for him to decide that this young girl would be his next victim,” Smart alleged in the book.Smart wrote that Mitchell met the girl at a family dinner and returned to the riverbed where he, Barzee, and Smart were living. Mitchell planned to return to the home and “rescue” the girl, which Smart wrote actually meant kidnap and rape.Mitchell left the campsite wearing the same dark clothing and carrying the same knife he used to kidnap Smart, she wrote. Smart claimed Mitchell opened the door to the home but heard a man snoring and left.“I know most people consider snoring a health risk or an annoyance,” Smart writes. “But in the case of this young girl, it saved her life.”Smart, now 30 years old, is an author and motivational speaker. She has two children with her husband.The claim is not the first link to the San Diego area. A local woman snapped photos of Smart with her captors in Lakeside back in October of 2002. (KGTV) - A North County lawyer, once charged with possessing child pornography and secretly filming women at a local tanning salon, is allowed to practice law again.A woman who contacted Team 10 said several North County residents are concerned he could be back in the community working as an attorney. David Kaye faced two felonies and nine misdemeanors in early 2011. Investigators say he filmed women without their knowledge at an Escondido tanning salon. After a customer saw the recording device, police set up a sting operation and Kaye was arrested after an investigation that lasted several months.Kaye entered a plea deal and pleaded guilty to two counts of secretly filming a person and two counts of peeking through a hole or private area. He received three years of formal probation. His law license was suspended in 2014.In the last few months, he got his license back. In documents filed with the state bar court, it said Kaye petitioned five times for his suspension to be lifted. It cited a list of community service and other charitable work with no further arrests. When questioned about his license being reinstated, Kaye wrote to Team 10: “… I don’t practice at all and I am retired with no intention of practicing again.” He said he fought to get his law license reinstated because he “did not want to spend the rest of [his] life wearing the scarlet letter of being a suspended or disbarred attorney after 20 years of practice.” He added that he did everything he could to “follow the state bar requirements to resume [his] status as an attorney in good standing.” Kaye said he wants to move on with his life and spends most of his free time doing volunteer work.
