LAKE CHARLES, La. — The holiday decorations are up around Lake Charles. Yet, the most wonderful time of the year just simply isn’t right now for many there, like Renee LeBleu–Booth. For a decade, she and her husband lived in their home, which is now missing a roof and beset by toxic mold because of Hurricane Laura.“It was beautiful. I loved it,” LeBleu-Booth reminisced. “It's depressing, but we're thankful we got a roof over our head.”Their temporary new home is an RV parked on their front lawn. It’s been a tough year for them, with her husband also battling leukemia, as they tried to save money for his treatment.“We cut back on everything,” she said. That included dropping their homeowner’s insurance, a crucial decision that’s now left them with no way to pay for repairs. They’re not alone. Many are having trouble recovering from the one-two punch of Hurricanes Laura and Delta. About 46 percent of the people who live in the affected areas live paycheck to paycheck.Getting government aid can be a long process and nonprofits are trying to fill in the gaps.“We've moved into the long-term recovery phase,” said Denise Durel, with the United Way of Southwest Louisiana. “So, now, we're actually going to be putting homes back together of low-income people who don't have insurance on their homes or their property.”However, she says a more permanent recovery is going to require many helping hands.“We need to continue to let, you know, the rest of the country remember that we're here and we've got this huge challenge ahead of us still,” Durel said. “We're strong people and we take care of each other. But we just need help right now. We really just need help.”Back at Renee LeBleu-Booth’s home, this longtime United Way volunteer now finds herself getting their help.“It’s hard,” she said, adding of those at United Way, “The people were amazing.”She said they are helping her restore her faith that they’ll find a way through.“It's going to get better,” she said.Hurricanes Laura and Delta left more than billion in damages. So far, more than 236,000 insurance claims have been made in Louisiana. A federal judge recently approved a plan to deal with thousands of lawsuits expected to be filed by homeowners against insurers over disputes about damage assessments. 2291

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — The officer at the center of a controversial arrest filmed in La Mesa is no longer employed with the department, according to the city.City manager Greg Humora said in a release on Friday that former LMPD officer Matt Dages is "not employed by the City of La Mesa in any capacity."The city could not comment on whether Dages resigned or was terminated. In June, video surfaced showing the May 27 altercation that had already started between Dages and 23-year-old Amaurie Johnson at Grossmont Trolley Station. In the video, Dages is seen pushing Johnson into a sitting position on a bench and eventually handcuffing and arresting him. Johnson was told he was being arrested for assaulting an officer.RELATED:Man seen in controversial arrest video files lawsuit against City of La MesaVIDEO: Incident between La Mesa officer, man at trolley station surfacesLa Mesa demonstration highlights several anti-police brutality ralliesFollowing the release of bodycam footage of the arrest, La Mesa Police Department said it had dropped charges against Johnson. LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Scientists are using an autonomous underwater vehicle to help get purified wastewater to your faucets.  The remote-controlled sub operated by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography helps measure how the purified water mixes with the Lake Jennings reservoir water. It’s one of the state-required steps water officials need to take before purified wastewater from the Padre Dam Water District’s Advanced Water Purification System is introduced to homes through Helix Water District’s Lake Jennings and water treatment facility.“There’s that factor that it’s coming from a waste facility originally.  So, what happens if there’s some sort of failure that didn’t get caught? Well, now there’s a buffer. There’s a buffer. It will sit in the reservoir,” said Helix’s Director of Water Quality Brian Olney. If all goes as planned, Padre Dam will need to expand its Advanced Water Purification System and build a pipeline to deliver that water to Lake Jennings.  Olney said that could happen by 2023. 1045

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Several hundred people peacefully marched in La Jolla Friday afternoon in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and to protest systemic racism. The group gathered at La Jolla Cove and then walked to Windansea Beach as they held white carnations to signify peace. It wasn't immediately clear how long the protest would be held. The protest is one of several local demonstrations that have been held in San Diego County over the last few weeks. Nationwide, demonstrations have been held, sparked by the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis while an officer held his knee on his neck for nearly 10 minutes. 640

LA MESA (KGTV) -- East County residents are worried about thousands of parolees flocking to their community. The state wants to add a parole office in the city of La Mesa but residents are not happy about the proposed location, saying it's too close to their schools and homes. “I’m very uncomfortable with the prospect of violent and sexual offenders routinely coming into my neighborhood,” says Susan Nichols with the Grossmont- Mt. Helix Improvement Association. The new building sits at the end of Grossmont Summit Drive, directly behind homes on Mt. Helix. The location is in close proximity to local schools, less than a mile from Grossmont High School and Mt. Helix Academy. “The bus stop that would service this facility is directly in front of Grossmont High School, the same stop that the students will be using,” says Nichols.Supervisor Dianne Jacob sent her community a letter the Department of Corrections addressed to the La Mesa City Clerk. Parent Wendy Tinsley Becker says she’s extremely concerned about the children in this area. Her family made copies of the letter and hand-delivered them to neighbors living close to the site. Supervisor Jacob sent 10News a statement that says in part: “I’m deeply troubled by the state proposal and I share the residents’ concerns about the impact on public safety. Allowing convicted criminals to frequent an area that close to thousands of Grossmont High School students and quiet neighborhoods is a terrible idea.”The La Mesa City Clerk says they are doing what they can to prevent the parole office from coming to the city. 10News reached out to the State Department of Corrections about the location. They responded in part:“The men and women who will be served at this office lived there before they were incarcerated and have returned to the community. There are ongoing lease negotiations at this time that are being discussed with the city, and those have not been finalized.” 1949
