(KGTV) - Parents in one North County school district are reacting to new numbers that show a sharp increase in the number of failing grades during virtual learning.Scotti Taylor has two children attending Mission Vista High: her son, a freshman, and her daughter, a junior. She says since the school year started in early September with virtual learning, both her children have struggled."Both of my kids normally have a 4.0 across the board. Now they're slipping down to low B's," said Taylor.Taylor says her daughter is struggling the most with virtual learning."I do think she's not as engaged. She's really struggling with focus. They don't have the same peer relationships or teacher relationships ... During class, she's mentioned many times that it's difficult to figure out what's going on. Sometimes she can't read the data on the screen," said Taylor.Taylor's children are not alone in their struggles. Vista Unified just released its six-week progress report for all of its high schools. During that time frame, it was all virtual learning.The number of F's that stand as the current class grade total more than 6,000. Last year at the same time, the number was more than 2,000, an increase of more than 200%. The number of students receiving F's in at least half of their classes increased from 3.9% in 2019 to 20.7% this year.In late October, Carlsbad Unified School District released an eight-week progress report and a similar finding, with F grades increasing by more than 300%.Taylor's kids are about to resume in-person learning Monday. If that option gets shut down again, she's worried about how her daughter's distance learning grades will affect her future."100% we are worried about how this is affecting college ... OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) – A father and his young son were hospitalized after a fire erupted at their mobile home in Oceanside.The fire was reported Tuesday at around 10:30 p.m. at a mobile home park on 251 Blue Springs Lane, according to Oceanside Fire officials.Witnesses told ABC 10News that the blaze started in the back of a mobile home, trapping a man and his son inside.As flames engulfed the home, some neighbors tried to put out the fire by spraying water from garden hoses.However, one neighbor heard banging coming from a window and a call for help. That neighbor got to the window, smashed it, and was then handed the boy by his father. Moments later, the neighbor helped the father crawl through the broken window.Responding firefighters were able to knock the fire down within 20 minutes. No other homes appeared to have been damaged by the blaze.ABC 10News learned the child was airlifted to Rady Children’s Hospital after suffering smoke inhalation.The boy’s father was transported by helicopter to UC San Diego’s Burn Center with burn injuries and cuts from the broken window.The cause of the fire is under investigation. 1146

OCEANSIDE (KGTV) — Bob Walker has been an Oceanside resident for 32 years, “I used to take my children down here to this beach right here we would put our towels on the sand, walk out to the waters edge and paddle out and surf.” If you look at that same beach now, the sand has been washed away, “you do not see people using this beach and beach access whatsoever, we don’t have this beach any longer,” Walker tells 10News. He’s now co-founder of Save Oceanside Sand, a local group advocating for jetties to be built along the coast to help build back up beaches and maintain sand levels. They plan to propose a jetty at Tyson Street, Wisconsin Street, Buccaneer Beach and St. Malo. Walker tells 10News the jetties will work to retain the sand, similarly to what Newport Beach has done with theirs, “they’ve got they have a series of eight groins." Groins, also known as jetties, will help with the city’s annual dredging process. Vicki Casper has also lived in Oceanside for over two decades, familiar with the dredging process, she says more needs to be done, “I’ve watched the sand be pumped back on the beach when they do the dredging and a month later its gone again."The sand washes away with the southern swell, migrates toward La Jolla. Walker tells 10News something needs to be done before North County loses all of its beaches, “this is the new reality the fact that we do not have any sand here whatsoever anymore.” 1434
