SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Faith and community leaders and former gang members from across San Diego are calling on gangs to agree to “A Season of Peace.”They're asking for no gunfire from Thanksgiving (Nov. 26) through January 1, 2021.With the coronavirus disrupting traditional violence intervention efforts, there has been a rise in gang and gun violence. According to SANDAG's 2019 report on homicides in the San Diego region, a firearm was used in 55% of homicides. Also, firearms were used 100% of the time in gang-involved homicides. Compared to mid-year 2019, there were a greater number of homicides -- 37% increase -- reported to law enforcement in the San Diego region from January to June of 2020. Since SANDAG reported on homicides for that time period, gun violence and homicides continue to rise.During the Season of Peace campaign, community leaders will lead community walks of peace, organize street-side memorial services, ceasefire agreements with gang leaders, and host a tree planting in honor of those who've died because of community violence.Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Community Assistant Support Team (CAST) will follow the advice of health officials, collaborate with law enforcement and politicians to ensure everyone's safety.For the past eight years, CAST has brought quality community service to families impacted by gun violence with de-escalation support, conflict resolution, retaliation prevention, and in hospital spiritual care. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Holiday Bowl officials said Thursday that its 43rd annual football game will not be played this year.Due to the pandemic, the bowl's Board of Directors voted unanimously to cancel the December game, which has been played since 1978. The bowl’s traditional Bowl Week events had already been canceled for this year, including the Holiday Bowl Parade.Holiday Bowl CEO Mark Neville said that in addition to challenges in holding the game safely for fans, the virus had, "created a situation in that we wouldn’t be able to welcome fans, ultimately resulting in no tourism. Couple that with the financial and potential health risks of trying to play the game during this pandemic and it was clear this was the right decision for us.""This has been the most difficult decision our Board has ever had to make since our bowl game started in 1978," said Neville. "While it’s not the decision we wanted to make, it’s the right decision for our non-profit association and the community for the long term."The game has brought in an average million in economic benefit and led to more than 28,000 hotel room nights annually for the region, the board said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Demonstrators gathered Friday outside San Diego Police Department's headquarters and marched through the streets downtown in protest of the Wisconsin shooting of Jacob Blake.Sky10 was live overhead as protesters marched through the streets, some carrying flags, to demonstrate. The gathering occurred on the same day as the March on Washington in the nation's capital, where thousands rallied on the 57th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.SDPD shut down Broadway and E Street between 14th and 15th streets, on the north and south sides of downtown SDPD headquarters in preparation for the protest. A flyer for the demonstration advertised the event as being in solidarity with protesters in Kenosha, Wisc., where Blake, a 29-year-old unarmed Black man, was shot seven times in the back by a police officer on Aug. 23.Officers have not said what led up to the shooting, but video shot by a neighbor shows Blake walking to an SUV and attempting to enter it moments before an officer grabs him by the shirt and shoots him.Blake is reportedly paralyzed from his wounds and recovering in a hospital.Sky10 video showed one individual being detained by police during the gathering. Police say they stopped a vehicle following the crowd after it ran at least one red light. During the stop, SDPD said the crowd also stopped and a suspect from the crowd "sprayed a chemical irritant spray at a line of officers."Four people were arrested, according to police: one for battery on an officer and resisting arrest with violence, and the remaining three for resisting/obstructing officers. SDPD later added that two people were arrested for shining a laser at officers and a police helicopter. Three more people were arrested later in the night, according to police. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hawaii recently passed a ban on sunscreens containing certain chemicals deemed harmful to their coral reefs.With more than 70 miles of coastline in San Diego County, the question of whether a similar ban could affect our region has been brought to light.The chemicals in question are oxybenzone or octinoxate, both of which are found in many commonly purchased sunscreens.RELATED: What ingredients to avoid, look for in reef-safe sunscreensA study by the Haereticus Environmental Laboratory found the chemicals seep into young coral and lead to coral bleaching, which occurs when an increase in sea temperatures kills the algae that grow inside coral, turning reefs white. This eliminates other nutrients that sustain marine life.Researchers say 14,000 tons of sunscreen lotion gets into reefs around the world every year.We asked our 10News Facebook fans how they would feel about a similar ban in California. For now, Vierra suggests picking one and sticking with it."I always want patients to pick one that they like and they'll use consistently and reapply," Vierra said.
