Cindy Hyde-Smith was expected to coast to victory in a Mississippi runoff that would conclude the last Senate race of 2018's midterm elections.Instead, Hyde-Smith has spent the days leading up to Tuesday's election mired in controversy that evoked the state's dark history of racism and slavery.It began when video emerged online of her telling supporters earlier this month that she'd be "on the front row" if one of her supporters there "invited me to a public hanging." A win for the GOP in Mississippi would further pad the party's majority in the Senate, even as Democrats have taken a solid majority in the House.The state is polarized along racial lines, with most white voters backing Republicans and nearly all black voters supporting Democrats.Democrats hope Hyde-Smith's comments will lead to a surge in black turnout and propel them to victory. However, even if black voters, who make up nearly 40% of the state's electorate, come out in full force, Espy would still have to outperform his party's history with whites to have a chance of winning.And Democrats have to overcome partisan trends in the deeply red state. Earlier this month, when multiple candidates in both parties were on the ballot, Hyde-Smith and conservative Chris McDaniel combined for 58% of the vote, while Espy and Democrat Tobey Bartee got 42%.On the eve of the election, President Donald Trump held two rallies for Hyde-Smith in an attempt to turn out the Republican base.He told the crowd in Tupelo to "get out" and vote in Tuesday's runoff."I think it'll be a very big day for Cindy, but don't take any chances," he said. Ray Chavez, the nation's oldest survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor, has died, the White House says. He was 106.The veteran passed away peacefully in his sleep Wednesday, CNN affiliate KFMB reported, citing a family statement.Chavez was a quartermaster stationed in Pearl Harbor at the time of the Japanese attack on Hawaii that launched America's entry into World War II in 1941.He lived in Poway, California, with his family but gained prominence in recent years as he traveled around the country, attending memorial services and commemorations. Earlier this year, he met with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office ahead of Memorial Day."Ray was honored to have served his country and to fight among heroes and loved meeting his fellow comrades," his family said in a statement. RAMONA, Calif. (KGTV) - The young man found shot to death in a Ramona home was identified by his roommate Monday as a resident of Ukraine.San Diego County Sheriff's deputies got a 911 call reporting Sunday at 8 p.m. reporting shots fired near the home on Wood Rock Lane. They found the victim dead inside.Four people live in the home, including Ben Ledbetter. He said the victim, a 20-year-old man, worked for Ledbetter's mobile detailing business for four years. Ledbetter believes he is being targeted and said someone killed his best friend out of anger."He's 100 percent good.  His heart is strong, his will is strong.  His attitude was positive.  You couldn't kill a better person.  He was the best person you could ever know," Ledbetter said.The victim's name is being withheld until his family can be notified.Deputies shut down the area near the home until 1 p.m. Monday to search for evidence. Ledbetter told 10News that detectives took his phone, truck and clothes as part of the investigation.Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact sheriff’s Homicide Detail at 858-974-2321 or 858-565-5200.   1182
