A 9th grade student at Buffalo’s International Preparatory School in New York says she was forced to remove her hijab by an assistant principal.“He was like, ‘Take that thing off your head, you’re not Muslim or Arabian.’” That’s what Najah Travis claims assistant principal Marin Lyonga told her after pulling her to the side on Monday.She refused, and called her mother. When Luvita Franklin arrived she said she was speaking with a second assistant principal, Patrick Doyle, who told her it’s district policy to provide proof of practicing the Muslim faith to wear a hijab.In a recording of the conversation played by Franklin for our cameras Doyle can be heard saying “It is a district policy.” When Franklin asked whether it was new he replied, “It’s not new.”We send a transcript to representative from the school district. Buffalo Schools chief of staff Darren Brown says it is not a policy for the district that students are required to provide proof of religion.He says administrators are always free to inquire more about students’ religions and ask questions to understand more. After investigating this incident, Brown says the assistant principals asked to see proof of religion because they were familiar with Travis from a number of interactions, but had never seen Travis in a hijab before.Brown says administrators were worried about it being seen as offensive to other students, and wanted to ensure the hijab was not being worn as a fashion statement.“It wouldn’t matter if it was the first or the 5th time you’ve seen her wearing it, once she put it on her head, it shouldn’t have mattered,” said Franklin.In the recording with Doyle, he can be heard saying, “All she needs to do is bring a note saying she’s a part of the religion from somebody that’s a member of the (indistinguishable)…as long as that’s done, at that point she can wear it as much as she wants. Nobody will ever stop her. We fully support all religions.”Imam Pasha Syed at Jami Masjid says hijabs are not exclusive to the Muslim faith. Anyone, at any time can wear one. He also says even Muslims don’t wear hijabs daily.“It takes time. It doesn’t happen from day one. Some people may have to grow into it. Sometimes it takes years.”Brown said that Buffalo Public Schools prides itself on inclusion and dignity for all students. Whether or not to vaccinate children against measles by using the MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) shot was a debate in Washington Wednesday.Two of the nation’s leading health experts, who expressed confusion at the growing numbers of people choosing not to vaccinate against measles, testified before the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Nancy Messonnier believe a spread of misinformation among those pockets of people against vaccinating is the culprit. A common argument from anti-vaxx groups is that the vaccine can cause brain swelling in children. The two health officials clarified that in rare instances with underlying immune deficiencies, an MMR vaccine is not recommended. Dr. Messonnier says a doctor would be able to determine if a child fell into that category. Amid the national debate, a Texas state representative is now pushing for legislation that would allow more parents to opt out of vaccines, arguing to the Texas Observer that if a child gets measles, parents could simply use "antibiotics and that kind of stuff" to prevent deaths. WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Trump administration’s coronavirus task force has announced strict new guidelines in an effort to restrict the spread of COVID-19, the illness caused by the virus. President Donald Trump said Monday that his administration is recommending the following: – Schooling from home, if possible – Avoiding gatherings of more than 10 people – Avoiding discretionary travel, shopping trips and social visits – And, avoiding bars, restaurants and food courts The White House is also recommending that older people and those with underlying health conditions “stay home and away from other people” as it continues to step up efforts to halt the pandemic.These guidelines are part of a campaign that the administration is calling, “15 days to slow the spread.”Specifically, the task force pleaded for millennials, America’s largest generation, to limit their interactions with others. “They are the core group that will stop this virus,” said Dr. Deborah Birx, the coordinator of the task force. “They are the group that communicates successfully, independent of picking up a phone.”Dr. Birx said millennials intuitively know how to contact each other without being in large social gatherings.“We’re asking all of them to hold their gatherings under 10 people. Not just in bars and restaurants, but in homes,” said Dr. Birx. “We really want people to be separated at this time. Because we don’t have a vaccine or a therapy to address the virus, Dr. Birx says the only thing we have at our disposal is the ingenuity and compassion of the American people. “We’re appealing to all Americans to take these steps, to protect each other,” said Dr. Birx.The White House is also advising governors in states with evidence of community transmission to close schools and says that states with evidence of community spread should close restaurants, bars, gyms, and other venues where people gather.
