Health care workers in remote regions can now get free pandemic response training online. It's a new program through Project HOPE. So far, more than 15,000 people in 119 countries and counting have completed the courses.“We started with a hospital ship that we’re best known for back in the 60s that was donated by then President Eisenhower to spread peace around the world by spreading health around the world,” Dr. Tom Kenyon, chief health officer for Project HOPE, said.In the late 1950s Project HOPE was started with a Navy Ship and a dream. Project HOPE has dedicated itself to global health, development and emergency response over its more than 60-year history.“Lowering maternal and newborn mortality, lowering mortality from various infections disease like HIV and TB also non communicable disease which are prevalent now,” Kenton said of the organization’s goals.In fact, in the early parts of 2020, Project HOPE was already working in Wuhan, China, training nurses when staff called saying they were running out of personal protective equipment. They stepped in and helped them access what they needed."Health workers are a big chain in the transmission from the health centers to the community,” Kenyon said. “They often bring it home, unknowingly. That’s not only true for COVID, but for other diseases as well.”As the virus started spreading, they realized they not only needed more people to be trained, but they needed to reach more people around the world.“It's amazing now how social media communications we have now, how efficient we can be in training,” Kenyon said. “We’ve discovered it a tremendous medium. It's not the same as face to face, but its close.”The trainings are found on DisasterReady.org which is available through the Cornerstone OnDemand Foundation. Tina Bolding, Director of DisasterReady.org, says they built eight courses for health care workers, leaders and volunteers accessible for anyone worldwide.“What is the background of COVID-19? How do you do infection prevention and control how do you do surveillance? How do you screen and triage patients? What happens when they become critical and you need to understand how to do resuscitation and stabilization?” Bolding said.She said they also discuss things like how to plan for an infection surge, how to communicate risk and how to manage public health messaging.“You’re talking about countries in very difficult places of the world, Somalia, Yemen, people from the Philippines, we have varied countries where people are completing it like Syria… where the internet connectivity isn't very strong,” Bolding said.“The use of online learning becomes highly critical and invaluable for a variety of reasons it doesn’t require people to gather together in one room that increases risk and it allows people to take it when and where they need it on a device that works best for them,” Bolding added.“Both in Latin America and now in southern Africa, they’ve taken the infection prevention and control module about putting on PPE and how to take it off and they’re using that as a standalone training program,” Kenyon said.The training is free and because the coronavirus has been devastating to so many, there's mental health resources as well. HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. — A Merrol Hyde Magnet High School senior recalled what she saw in the hallway after a chemical flash fire occurred during a science experiment.Sophia Sisler said she was in the hallway working on an art display Wednesday morning when she heard screaming."A student started coming downstairs into the nurse's office. They were crying and shaking, kind of freaking out a little bit and some of them had soot on them. They were really red, they had red spots on their faces and arms and that sort of thing," she recalled.Sisler would soon learn about the chemical accident that caused a Science teacher and 11 other students to be sent to hospitals. Several suffered second degree burns."A couple had open blisters on their legs already. I think they were all just really panicked from what happened," she said.Sisler said the science department has done the science experiment in the past without any problems. After the accident, she said teachers escorted those exposed to the nurse’s office until emergency crews arrived."They were clinging onto the teachers really and they were crying and they were terrified," she said.She wanted people on social media not to blame the teacher for this accident. It's something that has been done in the past. "He looked them all in the eye while he was actively burning and holding his burn spot and saying 'it’s going to be OK, you’re going to be OK' and he got them all out of the room unbelievably fast and he put all of the students before his own life," Sisler said.The senior said she hopes all the students and teacher fully recover. 1655

GARDEN GROVE (AP/CNS) - Mexican authorities say a United States couple missing for a week in Tijuana have been found buried on the property of one of their homes in Tijuana.Baja California state prosecutor Hirán Sánchez said Friday that the bodies of María Teresa López and Jesús Rubén López were discovered with the help of cadaver dogs. Authorities said they have arrested and charged the couple's son-in-law. Officials say the preliminary investigation suggests the motive was a monetary dispute over rent payments. The couple had crossed the border to collect rent payments for apartments they own in Tijuana."I don't have confirmation these are our victims,'' Garden Grove Police Department Lt. Carl Whitney said. "[Tijuana investigators] have not talked to our detectives."Investigators in Mexico have been tight-lipped about the investigation. But Whitney said he has seen reports from Mexican news sources that during the execution of a search warrant on the couple's property Friday, they found the bodies buried in a patio or courtyard area.Lopez and Guillen drove a pickup to Tijuana last Friday to collect rent from tenants at properties in Mexico, Whitney said.The two were due back last Friday afternoon, but when their daughter could not get in touch with them, she called police about 7:10 p.m. last Friday, he said.The daughter was tracking the two through a "find my phone'' online service for iPhones, and it showed that the couple was still at their Tijuana property, but a relative there said they weren't around, Whitney said.
