Electric cars now drive farther, charge faster and come in nearly every price range. But when GMC began promoting its Hummer EV pickup truck to be released this year, it became even clearer that electric cars are primed to go mainstream.Once the domain of environmentalists, then early adopters, EVs may soon have even truck bros kicking the gasoline habit. With many models now available or coming soon — including a knockoff of the lovable Volkswagen Microbus — you may be wondering if it’s finally time to buy or lease an EV.Here are the essential questions to answer before you do.(Full disclosure: I’m a convert myself after six years and 70,000 gas-free miles.)1. Can you afford an electric car?EVs tend to be pricy to buy but can be more affordable to lease. Finding federal, state and local government incentives can also reduce sticker shock. And, even if the monthly payment is higher than a comparable gas car, operating costs are lower.Gas vehicles cost an average of ,356 per year to fuel, tax and insure, while electric cost just ,722, according to a study by Self Financial. Find out how much you can save with the Department of Energy calculator.2. How far do you need to drive on a single charge?Although almost 60% of all car trips in America were less than 6 miles in 2017, according to the Department of Energy, the phrase “range anxiety” scared many would-be early adopters.Teslas became popular in part because they offered 250 miles of range. But the range of many EVs between charges is now over 200 miles; even the modestly priced Chevrolet Bolt can travel 259 miles on a single charge.Still, EVs have a “road trip problem,” according to Josh Sadlier, director of content strategy for car site Edmunds.com. “If you like road trips, you almost have to have two cars — one for around town and one for longer trips,” he says.3. Where will you charge it?If you live in an apartment without a charging station, this could be a deal breaker. The number of public chargers increased by 60% worldwide in 2019, according to the International Energy Agency. While these stations — some of which are free — are more available, most EV owners install a home station for faster charging.EVs can be charged by plugging into a common 120-volt household outlet, but it’s slow. To speed up charging, many EV owners wind up buying a 240-volt charging station and having an electrician install it for a total cost of ,200, according to the home remodeling website Fixr.4. What will you use the car for? While there are a few luxury electric SUVs on the market, most EVs are smaller sedans or hatchbacks with limited cargo capacity. However, the coming wave of electric cars are more versatile, including vans, such as the Microbus, and trucks, such as an electric version of the popular Ford F-150 pickup.5. Do you enjoy performance? This is where EVs really shine. According to automotive experts, electric cars beat their gas counterparts in these ways:Immediate response with great low-end acceleration, particularly in the 0-30 mph range.Sure-footed handling due to the heavy battery mounted under the car, giving it a low center of gravity. No “shift shock” from changing gears in a conventional gas car’s transmission.Little noise except from the wind and tires.Other factorsOnce you consider the big questions, here are other reasons to make an electric car your next choice:Reduced environmental guilt. There is a persistent myth that EVs simply move the emissions from the tailpipe to the power generating station. Yes, producing electricity produces emissions, but many EV owners charge at night when much of the electricity would otherwise be unused. According to research published by the BBC, electric cars reduce emissions by an average of 70%, depending on where people live.Less time refueling. It takes only seconds to plug in at home, and the EV will recharge while you’re doing other things. No more searching for gas stations and standing by as your tank gulps down gasoline. No oil changes. Dealers like a constant stream of drivers coming in for oil changes so they can upsell other services. EVs have fewer moving parts and require fewer trips to the dealership for maintenance.Carpool lanes and other perks. Check your state regulations to see if an EV gets you access to the carpool lane, free parking or other special advantages.Enjoy the technology. Yes, EVs are more expensive, but they also tend to offer top-of-the-line comfort, safety features and technology compared with their gas counterparts.More From NerdWalletDon’t Return Your Leased Car — Sell ItZooming More, Driving Less: When to Ditch Your CarIs That Nearly New Salvage-Title Car Really a Deal?Philip Reed is a writer at NerdWallet. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV)- While many business owners were forced to make the painful decision to shut down during the pandemic, some still took the risk of opening for the first time.Samantha and Weston Nawrocki weren’t going to let the COVID-19 pandemic stop their goal of opening a new café locally.“For coffee, the great thing is most people treat it even non-pandemic as a to go item,” said Weston Nawrocki. The couple has a coffee shop and roasting location in Rancho Bernardo, but their new business is up and running in their own city, Escondido, just six blocks away from their home.Manzanita Roasting Company opened Friday inside The Grand, which is home to the historic Ritz Theater, now newly renovated.“I’ve been a resident since I was a kid,” said Samantha Nawrocki. “I always drove by and said ‘I wish something would go in there’ and now we’re in there.”The City of Escondido shut down a couple of lanes on Grand Avenue and helped businesses transition to provide outdoor services under the current COVID-19 restrictions. Now, more new businesses are opening on busy Grand Avenue.“We have Daydream, which is a lovely gift store, we also have Off The Grid Surplus, let’s say you’re an off-road enthusiast of the jeep crowd, that’s definitely going to be your place,” said Amber Tarrac, the Deputy Director of Economic Development for the City of Escondido. “We also have Good Omen Mead, a meadery which is amazing stuff to try.”Tony Pepperoni Pizzeria and Barrel republic are currently still under construction, but Tarrac said they should be opening on Grand Avenue sometime soon, although a specific date is not clear.“We’re really excited about them, they’ve been under construction for a while,” she said.Tarrac said it’s not just Grand Avenue doing well with new businesses; from March 1st through November 23rd, Tarrac said hundreds of new businesses opened across the city.“We’ve had 696 new businesses; these are new permanent, in city businesses,” she said. “The bulk of those businesses are actually home occupations, so we’ve had quite a few folks that have decided to become entrepreneurs and start different businesses out of their home. We also had a number of retailers and restaurants open up.”The Nawrocki’s say they were able to hire ten new employees right before the holidays. For them, it’s the positivity, help from the city, outpouring of local support, and the love of coffee that’s gotten them through this year.“I feel like there’s more people kind of walking around and excited to support small business,” said Samantha Nawrocki. “We come down here to grand avenue and support local businesses, so it’s really great to be a part of that.”Businesses in historic downtown Escondido will be participating in Small Business Saturday on the 28th, in an effort to get more people to shop local.Discounts and bonuses may be offered at some locations. The City of Escondido is helping small businesses with outdoor moves; to find out more, click here.Complimentary fencing is also available for businesses that want to move services outdoors. Tarrac said business owners can submit an order for a limited supply of fencing by emailing Business@Escondido.org 3195

Experts predict over billion worth of campaign political ads will be produced in 2020. So, what are the campaigns doing to influence your vote? THE EXPERTS To find out the tactics used by campaigns, we reached out to Sara Cutter, a Republican ad maker, and Julian Mulvey, a Democratic ad maker. SECRET #1: FONTPay attention to font. Mulvey says Democrats will use a lot of red lettering in commercials against President Donald Trump. That's because it instills some fear and catches your eye. "It's what I call a black, white and red ad. Which you see a lot in negative adverting. Those are sort of the primal colors and the first color you ever see in your life is red," Mulvey said. Mulvey pointed to an ad by the Lincoln Project as an example of red lettering. SECRET #2: VOICEPay attention to the voice. Sometimes, Cutter says, ad makers will use a female voice when they are worried a claim may be too over-the-top. "There can be more fear in a females voice without it seeming to be too much. There can also be more urgency in a female's voice," Cutter said. SECRET #3: JOURNALISTS Pay attention to journalists appearing in a campaign commercial. While journalists hate appearing in ads, Mulvey says they can't sue to get their face out of them. It's also become more popular in recent years as they test well in focus groups. "Local anchors are trusted individuals," Mulvey said, defending the tactic. SECRET #4: DISTORTED PHOTOSSometimes photos of candidates are altered. A recent ad by individuals trying to re-elect Senator David Perdue made Perdue's opponent's nose look bigger. 1604

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. — A mother is speaking out and speaking up after a high school administrator called cheerleaders at Harrison High School in Farmington Hills, Michigan strippers.Dorrine Griffen said she was shocked and hurt when her daughter came home after a pep rally at Farmington's Harrison High School to learn a school administrator called out the cheer team and degraded them.“You got to refer to those students as strippers, and now you’re right back, hands-on, working with them,” said Griffen. On September 21, Harrison High School cheerleaders held a pep rally in the school gymnasium when something was said by a school administrator.“She said the assistant principal referred to the routine the girls performed at the pep rally and said she wouldn’t allow them to perform anymore or would not want to have them perform anymore because they look like strippers,” Griffen said.Griffin, an educator herself, said this kind of language is disappointing.“We have a bigger role. We have to bring those students up as far as making them feel important, we have to inspire, we have to motivate,” she said.School officials have been dealing with the fallout after the comment was made.WXYZ reached out the school for comment. They sent the letter they sent to the Harrison community after the incident, that reads in part: 1365
