SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former Torrey Pines High School student who posted threats targeting the school on his Instagram account was sentenced Friday to a year in custody, with at least six months to be served at a residential alcohol and mental health treatment facility.Kevin Matlak, 21, pleaded guilty last month to one count of making a criminal threat.Superior Court Judge Polly Shamoon placed Matlak on five years probation and ordered him to stay away from Torrey Pines High and have no contact with three people named in a criminal complaint.RELATED: Former Torrey Pines student faces judge in online threats caseDefense attorney Brian Watkins said Matlak didn't threaten anyone directly, but three former classmates -- whom the defendant didn't know -- read his posts on Instagram and felt threatened by them.The classmates of Matlak's who graduated in 2015 reported the threats to law enforcement on May 30, leading to his arrest."I hate all of you," Matlak wrote in one post, according to Deputy District Attorney Matthew Greco.RELATED: Former Torrey Pines High School student seeking psychiatric help after online threat"Get the (expletive) out of San Diego 2K18 before I find u," the defendant wrote in another post. Saguache County, Colorado is larger than the states of Delaware and Rhode Island combined.It is a valley surrounded by mountain peaks that draws people who are looking for the secluded lifestyle that rural America can offer.“Everybody knows everybody,” said Doug Peeples, who owns a grocery market in the county seat of Saguache.The town of Saguache is small, having never boasted more than 700 full-time residents in the last 30 years. The county is even more dispersed as the population density is less than two people per square mile.Then, in 2014, all of that changed once Colorado became the first state in the country to legalize recreational marijuana.“I would venture to guess we saw 2,000 to 3,000 people in overnight,” said Saguache County Sheriff Dan Warwick.“All of a sudden we had an influx of people that were out-of-towners,” added Peeples.Located in the southern part of Colorado, the county became a destination for people from neighboring states who wanted to use the weed recreationally, but particularly those who wanted to start grow operations before returning the product back to their home state-- something that is illegal.“With only six deputies, how do you try and catch these bad actors?” said Warwick. “You just hope to come across it.”The influx led to squalor and crime as sheds laid abandoned after people would use them for growing marijuana before skipping town once they harvested.“You’d see people come in and they would grow on a piece of property that they leased for a short period of time,” said Warwick. “They would leave all their trash and junk everywhere and then just pack up and leave.”It became a divisive issue in the county as full-time residents would be left to deal with the mess.“For a while, this place was the Wild Wild West,” said county commissioner Jason Anderson.Anderson, along with the rest of the county commissioners, worked to find a solution by passing an excise tax in 2016 that would give them 5 percent of the profits when legal growers would sell to retailers.In theory, the legislation would allow the county to benefit from something that had caused so much turbulence as the commissioners allocated money to go towards schools, enforcement, and other areas that needed improvement, but it started off slow.“The first year [of the tax] we only saw ,000, again, because the legal operations weren’t up and running yet,” said Anderson.Gradually, however, that tax money started to increase. After only seeing ,000 in 2017 Saguache County pulled in ,000 in 2018 and 0,000 in 2019.“We hired a code enforcement officer and outfitted him with everything he needs full-time, which is something we could never even think about beforehand,” said Anderson.The county also set up a scholarship fund for local students planning to go to college and helped others get to school by updating trail systems that encouraged kids to walk in a county where the childhood poverty rate is 46 percent.“I think we are better off [from the legalization of marijuana] in that we need all the resources we can to continue to adapt to the changes.”Some places in town still have yet to see the money as some storefronts along the town of Saguache’s main street still lay vacant, but the county hopes as the tax money grows each year, so does prosper in the town. 3324

You hit a pothole, nail or curbWhile you’re checking your tires’ pressure — which you should do at least once each month — run your hand over the tread surface to see if there are any nails stuck in the tire or cuts in the tread or sidewall, Bennett says.If you find a nail, don’t pull it out or you might wind up with a flat tire. Instead, drive to a tire repair shop and get them to pull out the nail and, if necessary, patch it.Often, tires are damaged by running over a pothole or rubbing against a curb while parking, Edmonds says. Look for bubbles or bulges that could indicate a developing problem and result in a high-speed blowout. Damage on the inside of the tire is harder to spot and might require a trip to a tire store for an expert’s inspection.3. Your tires are losing tractionTires that have lost all or most of their tread can feel fine while driving in dry conditions. But once rain or snow hits, they lose traction and braking distances increase, Bennett says.To measure tread depth, insert a quarter into the tread in the center of the tire with George Washington’s head pointing toward the tire. If the tread obscures the top of his head, your tires are in good shape.If the top of Washington’s head is even with the tread, the tires are still safe to drive on, but it’s time to start shopping for new ones, Bennett says.4. You hear tire noise, feel vibration or ‘pulling’These are all indicators that something is wrong either with your tires or, in some cases, with the alignment of your front wheels. As the tread wears, tires can become noisy, according to Edmonds.Tires that wear unevenly can cause a vibration through the car, which is commonly felt through the steering wheel. The car is pulling when it doesn’t track straight, slowly wandering either left or right. This is often caused by misaligned front wheels.5. You bought your tires more than six years agoRubber dries out over time, and even if there’s still plenty of tread, the sidewalls can crack.The date the tires were manufactured is printed on the sidewall and is usually preceded by DOT for the Department of Transportation. The first two numbers stand for the week in the year it was made, and the other two are for the year. SAN DIEGO — Some parents are keeping their children out of school Tuesday to protest the San Diego Unified School District’s sex education curriculum.A group of parents say the district’s Sexual Health Education Program (SHEP) is too graphic and not age-appropriate for their students, and they are urging district officials to eliminate the program.The parents have taken their concerns to the district’s School Board, but they said board members refuse to replace the curriculum.District officials said students can opt out of the course, but parents want the images they consider graphic gone.Ashley Bever, a substitute teacher who is organizing the one-day protest, said she was surprised to see all of the materials student had access to.“I thought a 6th grade teacher did not write this. Where it did come from? Why is it so explicit? SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 50-year-old man died after he apparently lost control of his vehicle on a Black Mountain Ranch street and tumbled about 20 feet down an embankment, police said Monday.The crash was reported shortly before 10:30 p.m. Sunday in the 17900 block of San Dieguito Road, west of Camino Del Sur, San Diego police Officer Sarah Foster said.The victim was driving eastbound on San Dieguito road at a high speed when he lost control of his vehicle and it rolled down a 20-foot embankment, Foster said.The man was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, the officer said.
