SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man attempting to kill weeds set his house on fire in San Diego on Sunday morning, according to firefighters.The man was trying to use a hand-held propane torch to kill the weeds in a planter box in front of his property when the plants caught fire.Shortly after the plants caught fire, the flames spread to the rest of the house.Firefighters arrived quickly and were able to extinguish the flames in about 5 minutes.Authorities estimate there is about ,000 in damage to the house.No one was injured. 533

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Navy sailor appeared in court Tuesday after authorities say he stole 20 hand grenades from a San Diego-based guided missile destroyer.Authorities say Gunner’s Mate Second Class Aaron Booker was taken into custody in Illinois.According to court documents, personnel assigned to the USS Pinckney discovered that 20 grenades disappeared from their storage crates in 2017.In April of 2017, an off-duty law enforcement officer noticed a black backpack leaning against a guardrail on the side of the road along Interstate 15 in northwest Arizona.The bag was standard military issue with “GM2 BOOKER” handwritten on a tag inside the bag. The bag contained 18 of the grenades that were missing from the USS Pinckney.According to authorities, law enforcement is still searching for the two missing grenades.The complaint states that Booker acknowledged to investigators that he drove the same route before reporting to his duty station in March.“A backpack full of grenades on the side of the road is obviously extremely dangerous and could have had resulted in injuries or death,” said U.S. Attorney Adam L. Braverman said. “The theft of explosives is a very serious offense, particularly if it is carried out by an insider with access to military weapons and secrets.”Booker will appear for a detention hearing before being transferred to San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new grant is helping a San Diego nonprofit expand its services during the coronavirus pandemic.Kitchens for Good recently got a ,000 grant from the San Diego Foundation and San Diego Gas & Electric.With the new money, Kitchens for Good is now cooking 7,000 meals each week, which local food banks give away to people in need.The meals are "heat and eat," said co-founder Aviva Paley. That helps people who can't cook or don't have a full kitchen get healthy meals."If you are a home-bound senior or someone who doesn't have a full kitchen or the capacity to cook for yourself, it can be really difficult to turn that bag of mixed match groceries into a healthy nutritious meal," said Paley.Before the pandemic, Kitchens for Good made 2,000 meals per week. The program provided job and skills training to people with troubled past, many of whom had been in prison or experienced homelessness.RELATED: San Diego program transforming lives in the kitchenThe grant is helping Kitchens for Good rehire some of their graduates who had lost jobs during the pandemic."Many of our apprentices have been on that other end of the food line; hungry, hopeless and homeless," said Paley. "This gives them an opportunity to really support someone. And they know how much food can mean to someone who's really struggling."The grant will allow Kitchens for Good to make an additional 100,000 by the end of 2020. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new report paints a grim picture of the housing supply in San Diego.According to numbers just released by the Southern California Real Estate Research Council, housing permits in San Diego County dropped by 43% through the first six months of 2019, compared to the same period in 2018.So far this year, there have been 2,037 units of housing permitted in San Diego."We are in deep trouble in housing production," says Borre Winckel, the President of the Building Industry Association of San Diego County. "We can't build the housing for the people that need it most."Winckel says decades of increased costs from state and local fees, regulations, labor costs and more have led to this point. He says it's too expensive for developers to build anything that the average San Diegan can afford. He says that's pushing the "workforce" population of teachers, first responders and military out of the market."There will be homelessness, and there will be more workforce displacement to Temecula and points beyond," says Winckel. "That's all because we have screwed up the regulatory environment that exists to build houses for the people that need them."The numbers show a steady decline in housing construction in San Diego.2015: 6,403 permits2016: 6,0362017: 5,2302018: 4,2862019: 2.037 (so far)Winckel says the only solution is to ease regulations and make it easier for companies to build.According to the report, Santa Barbara had a 40% decline, while Los Angeles and San Bernardino had declines in permits around 20%. 1547

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man who pleaded guilty to selling counterfeit oxycodone pills that led to the overdose death of La Jolla resident was sentenced in court Wednesday. According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, Trevon Antone Lucas was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the death of the La Jolla resident in 2018. According to court documents, Lucas pleaded guilty in June to distribution of fentanyl resulting in death. In his plea, Lucas admitted that he posted online ads for the illegal sale of prescription pills investigators say were laced with fentanyl. An investigation found that Lucas was twice warned about the danger of the pills he was selling. “Trevon Lucas knew the pills he was selling were deadly, but he sold them anyway, showing a remarkable disregard for the safety and well-being of his fellow human beings,” said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. “His greed transcended his humanity, and for that he will serve a very long sentence.” In his plea agreement, Lucas said he met with the victim in June of 2019, selling him nine “blues,” a slang term for prescription oxycodone pills. The pills were counterfeit and laced with fentanyl, according to documents. The documents go on the say Lucas had previously been warned about the sale of the pills. The victim reportedly died after consuming the pills. Three other people, Cenclair Marie Fields, Kevin Vandale Chandler and Donovan Adontas Carter also pleaded guilty in the case. 1454
