GUANGZHOU, April 18 (Xinhua) -- China's trade volume will reach 5.3 trillion U.S. dollars by the year 2020, Li Gang, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation under the Ministry of Commerce, said Sunday.Li made the remakes at the ongoing 107th China Import and Export Fair, the country's largest trade fair, held in the southern city of Guangzhou.According to Li, China's merchandise imports and exports will hit 4.3 trillion U.S. dollars in 2020.Merchandise exports will top other countries and be 2.4 trillion U.S. dollars in 2020, 10.1 percent of the world total.Imports will reach 1.9 trillion U.S. dollars and rank second largest, accounting for 8.2 percent of the world total.Weighed down by the global financial crisis, the nation's foreign trade recorded a 13.9 percent year-on-year decline to 2.2 trillion U.S. dollars in 2009, with merchandise exports of 1.2 trillion U.S. dollars and imports of 1 trillion U.S. dollars. In the first quarter, foreign trade began to grow again, jumping 44.1 percent to 617.85 billion U.S. dollars, according to customs data.

BEIJING, April 3 (Xinhua) -- China's Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) of the non-manufacturing sector rose to 58.4 percent in March, a rebound of12 percentage points from February, when the index fell below the boom-bust line of 50 percent for the first time since a year earlier, an industrial association said Saturday. The PMI, designed to provide a real-time snapshot of business conditions, includes a package of indices including new orders, inventory levels, production and others that measure economic performance. A reading of above 50 percent suggests expansion, while one below 50 percent indicates contraction. The rise of the index indicated robust market activities in service sectors, which combined with an optimistic outlook that would encourage private investment and promote healthy and coordinated development of national economy, said the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing (CFLP) vice president Cai Jin.According to the CFLP survey, the new order sub-index for China's non-manufacturing sector climbed to 54.6 percent last month, up 8.4 percentage points than February. The outlook sub-index was 70.4 percent, up 2.4 percentage points. The CFLP survey covers 20 non-manufacturing industries, including logistics, wholesale, hospitality, supermarkets and construction. The PMI for manufacturing sectors rose to 55.1 percent in March, the 13th straight month that the index was above 50 percent.

BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhua) -- The energy intensity of China's centrally-administered state-owned enterprises fell close to government targets from 2005 to 2009, a senior SOE administrator said Monday. The level of energy consumption per 10,000 yuan of output value was down 15.1 percent over the five-year period, said Li Rongrong, director of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC).Combined investment in energy-efficient and emissions reduction projects by centrally-administrated SOEs totaled 87.84 billion yuan (12.9 billion U.S. dollars) in 2009, said Li.This helped reduce sulfur dioxide emissions per 10,000 yuan of output value by 36.8 percent and chemical oxygen demand by 33 percent compared with 2005 levels, said Li.Enterprises executives who performed poorly in promoting energy conservation and emissions reductions, would be held for responsible by the SASAC, said Li.But he did not explain what would be considered a "poor" performance nor what penalties would be enforced.Under China's 11th five-year plan (2006-2010), the centrally-administered SOEs are expected to reduce energy intensity by 20 percent by the end of 2010 from 2005.By the end of 2009, China had 131 centrally-administered SOEs, many of them leading companies in highly polluting industries, including petrochemicals, steel, power generation, and non-ferrous metals industries.

BEIJING, March 31 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council, the cabinet, has said innovation in science and technology will improve the nation's competitiveness in the world stage.Scientific and technological innovation could solve major scientific and technical issues that concerned the country's overall situation and long-term development, said a statement released after a regular meeting of the State Council Wednesday.During the meeting, an official from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) delivered a report on the implementation of the "Knowledge Innovation Program" (KIP), which aims to make the academy a world-leading base for scientific research. The program was initiated in 1998 and scheduled to finish in 2010.The government would extend the KIP from 2011 to 2020, the meeting was told. The State Council called for deeper reform of research institutes and improved rewards and restrictions to encourage competition among scientists and researchers and to foster talent. The government planned to develop education programs that were closely related to the innovation drive and strengthen international cooperation, said the statement.Premier Wen Jiabao presided over the meeting.
