INDIANAPOLIS -- Two men have been arrested in connection with the death of a 1-year-old Indianapolis girl.The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department tweeted the news about the arrest Wednesday morning. Darrin Banks, 27, and Brian Palmer, 29, were arrested for their involvement in the shooting. Malaysia Robson was killed when gunfire struck her home on the 3500 block of Wittfield Avenue on March 30.  445

But a group of doctors is pushing back, saying it's part of the solution not part of the problem. They may be color coded, but for Catherine Nieves, the liquid she's pouring in her cups are more than trendy new drinks. She says what's inside them, changed her life."I was homeless and a drug addict who lost custody of my oldest child," Nieves says.Nieves owns a store and prepares drinks made with Kratom, a coffee-like herb. After a C-section a few years back, she started taking Kratom for pain, instead of the addictive opioid Percocet her doctor prescribed."It made the pain just as manageable," Nieves says. "But it was healthier for me mentally just to not get back in the habit with pills when it was something that I was already very sensitive to.But the FDA describes Kratom differently, calling it dangerously addictive, and similar to narcotics like opioids with respect to addiction and death."Yes they interact similar with opioid receptors in the body but the effects are very different," says Oliver Grundmann Ph.D. with the University of Florida.Dr. Grundmann is one of several doctors publicly rejecting the FDA's position on Kratom. He says it doesn't impact breathing the way opioids do, so that lessens the chance of an overdose. And he says the FDA is wrong to link it to 44 deaths in the last decade."So we are not saying that Kratom doesn't have potential adverse effects," Dr. Grundmann says. "But is it positively linked to these deaths? We don't think so."Grundmann believes it should be regulated by the FDA but not as a narcotic."What is at the heart of all of this is we want to consumers to be protected and we want them to have quality products," Grundmann."I have children I have a great life that I've made for myself it's just entirely too much to possibly jeopardize," Nieves says.Nieves wants people who are in her situation to see a safer way out.Nieves says, "It seems like a bottomless hole, addiction. IRVINE, Calif. (KGTV) -- The fast-moving Silverado Fire is threatening several homes in the Santiago Canyon area near Irvine forcing the evacuation of 60,000 residents Monday morning. The blaze erupted just after 6:45 a.m. in the area of Santiago Canyon and Silverado Canyon roads, and within an hour consumed about 50 acres. In a press conference just after 4 p.m. Monday, fire officials said the fire grew to 7,200 acres with 0% containment.Crews are battling flames and smoke amid strong wind gusts reaching up to 70 mph. The region is under a large plume of smoke creating unhealthy air quality prompting warnings to residents to stay indoors and limit outdoor activity. Five Cal Fire San Diego engines left to help fight the fire Monday morning, contributing to the 500 personnel fighting the blaze.Approximately 20,000 homes evacuated, Orange County Fire officials said.Mandatory evacuation orders were issued for the Orchard Hills community north of Irvine Boulevard from Bake Parkway to Jamboree Road. (WXMI) — An 11-year-old girl in Ionia is spreading Christmas cheer and collecting gifts to give to children with long-term hospital stays.Over the past week, hundreds of boxes have been stacking up in 11 year-old Mchalie Walter’s garage.“The first time we got a ton of packages it made me really happy,” Mchalie said.Mchalie is overjoyed and she won’t even be the one opening the presents.RELATED: East County family's Santa treehouse helps families in needMchalie is collecting them for kids at Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor. INDIANAPOLIS -- A guidance counselor at Roncalli High School says she was sad and hurt that school administrators and the archdiocese gave her the option to resign or dissolve her marriage after they learned that she was married to a woman. Shelly Fitzgerald says she was asked to meet with school president Joe Hollowell and Principal Chuck Weisenbach last Friday.At that meeting, Fitzgerald says she was shown a copy of her marriage certificate. Hollowell said someone turned it into him and that he then had to turn it into the archbishop."I was hurt, sad, I was hurt," said Fitzgerald. "I've been there 15 years. I've been a part of a community that loves each other. I was stunned. Fitzgerald says she was given four options: to resign, dissolve her marriage or, "stay kind of quiet and hope that it would, you know, stay quiet until the end of the year and keeping my job as long as possible if it stayed out of the media and then they would not renew my contract the following year. Or depending on how boisterous it became, they would have to move towards sooner termination.""I love my wife very much. I didn't have any intention to resign a job that I adore. For me to walk out was like saying I didn't want to be there anymore and that wasn't the case," said Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald says she's been quiet for the past 15 years and she wants to be honest with the people in her life that love her. "It really wasn't hiding, I'll tell you that. People knew. People I worked with knew. People I called friends and love, that wasn't secret from the school. There are tons of people that knew and loved me.
