SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System announced today 40 local high school students who took part in an annual essay contest were awarded new laptop computers and backpacks.Students from more than 70 high schools around the county entered the MTS and Coca-Cola Laptop Scholarship Contest, which required the applicants to submit an essay on ways to get more students to use public transit such as lowering student transit passes.The winning students, from 27 schools, received a 15.6-inch HP Touch-Screen laptop and a Northface backpack that doubles as a laptop case. MTS officials honored the winning students on Friday at the 12th and Imperial Transit Center."It was great that winners came from so many campuses,'' said MTS CEO Paul Jablonski. "Their essays presented convincing ideas. SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- San Diego lifeguards and firefighters Sunday rescued a surfer who suffered a medical emergency while in the water in the Bird Rock area, authorities said.At 12:36 p.m., lifeguards and firefighters from the San Diego Fire- Rescue Department responded to the cliffs near Calumet Park about a surfer experiencing an unknown medical emergency, Lt. Andy Lerum of Lifeguard Services said.The man in his 60s experienced a possible heart-related ailment or seizure, but rescuers were not sure of the exact nature of his medical emergency, Lerum said.The man swam to the beach, where he collapsed and lifeguards began tending to him, the lieutenant said. He was taken by stretcher about 30 yards to the bottom of the cliff.Firefighters used the department's Rescue 44 truck, equipped with a crane, to lift the surfer from the beach to the top of the cliff, Lerum said. An ambulance then took the man to a La Jolla hospital for evaluation. He was reportedly in stable condition. 995

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police searched Thursday for a hit-and-run driver who ran a red light at a Mission Valley intersection and slammed into another car, seriously injuring it's 60-year-old driver.The crash was reported shortly before 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Friars and Frazee roads, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.A 60-year-old woman was driving a 2007 Lexus sedan southbound on Frazee Road when a man driving a blue Ford pickup truck westbound on Friars Road ran a red light at Frazee and crashed into the driver's side of the Lexus, Heims said.The pickup driver kept driving, then pulled over a short distance away before he got out and ran away, the officer said.
