The COVID-19 pandemic has been a difficult and stressful time for families, but we're seeing one silver lining when it comes to fathers and their kids.Nearly 70% of dads in a recent study from the Harvard Graduate School of Education say they're feeling closer to their kids right now.The dads have had to be home more than usual, but one of the people involved with the study also believes it's helping that dads may be less distracted with work than they usually are.Also, parents' social lives have changed, so they're doing things with their kids they may have done with their friends previously.Dads in the study say they're also getting to know their kids better. More than half say they're spending more time talking to their children about things that are important to them.“I think we're all better parents when we know our kids better,” said Richard Weissbourd, who directs the Making Caring Common Project at Harvard. “I mean it's respectful to enable our kids to really speak, but we also learn a lot about them and it deepens our relationships with them and it also helps us I think in being mentors and guides to them when they make key decisions in their lives.”The Making Caring Common Project is a national effort to make moral and social development priorities in raising kids.Weissbourd is worried there will be a strong pull to return to our normal lives and dads' relationships won't continue in the same way.But you can take steps now to keep those bonds.“I really encourage fathers to establish rituals and routines with their kids now, like if you're going for a walk every weekend with your kid, continue doing that even when the pandemic is over,” said Weissbourd. “If you're playing games with your kid, develop a ritual around playing games with your kids or activities.”He says more fathers are also watching TV with their kids and talking with them about what's going on in the world surrounding the pandemic and the protests. The CDC is now recommending “universal mask use” both indoors and outdoors whenever someone is not at their own home. This is the first time the agency has included indoor spaces in their recommendations for universal mask wearing.It comes as coronavirus cases in the U.S. continue to surge past 14 million positive cases and deaths climb above 277,000, with many states only beginning to see a potential second spike from Thanksgiving celebrations.In the CDC’s weekly report, they said with more time spent indoors with the colder weather, the ongoing holiday season and silent spread of the disease with about 50 percent of transmission happening from asymptomatic people, “the United States has entered a phase of high-level transmission where a multipronged approach to implementing all evidence-based public health strategies at both the individual and community levels is essential.”These include universal mask use, physical distancing, avoiding nonessential indoor spaces, increased testing, prompt quarantine, enhanced ventilation, and widespread vaccination coverage. The agency stresses “no single strategy can control the pandemic,” and all of these recommendations will be needed to break transmission chains.The CDC warns that indoor spaces and crowded outdoor spaces, especially where distancing is not maintained or consistent use of face masks is not possible, i.e. like when eating or drinking, “have been identified as particularly high-risk scenarios.”“Compelling evidence now supports the benefits of cloth face masks for both source control (to protect others) and, to a lesser extent, protection of the wearer,” the CDC guidelines now read. “Face mask use is most important in indoor spaces and outdoors when physical distance of ≥6 feet cannot be maintained. Within households, face masks should be used when a member of the household is infected or has had recent potential COVID-19 exposure.”Any indoor spaces should also have good ventilation, the CDC says. "For indoor settings, increased room air ventilation can decrease the concentration of small droplets and particles carrying infectious virus suspended in the air and, thereby, presumably decrease the risk for transmission."The World Health Organization recently updated their guidelines that everyone 12 and older should wear a mask outside, inside and even inside people’s own homes if they are poorly ventilated. They recommended that children ages 6-to-11 should wear a mask based on a “risk-based approach.”Earlier this week, the CDC said they recommend against traveling this holiday season to slow the spread of the coronavirus. There are about 19.3 million continued claims or people still unemployed.With so many Americans looking for work right now, a lot of people are being targeted by scammers.“I was actually scammed myself,” said Amelia Brockman.In March, shortly after Brockman uploaded her profile to the gig site Upwork, she had her first experience with what’s known as an employment scam.“On Upwork, I was looking for work and a job I found would pay a lot of money for it,” said Brockman. “I was desperate because I didn’t want to go back to actual outside work.”This put her in a vulnerable place, where she ignored some warning signs.“I got the job. It seemed legit,” she said. “Then, he started asking if I am going to pay you, I need you to go buy Google cards. Something about how he needed to put me in the system.”She never got paid, in fact, she lost roughly ,000 in Google card purchases.“People are heartless at this point. Not everyone, just the scammers,” she said. “It is getting ridiculous.”Over the past three months, while looking for other work, Brockman has come across at least 40 other job scam posts, including one where during an online interview, the interviewer started asking her for personal info and to purchase equipment.“I called the company and eventually I texted him back and said ‘dear sir, that is a scam. A newly released report by the BBB, shows 53% of the people targeted by employment scams are unemployed and roughly 75% of the people actually scammed are in a personal financial crisis.To avoid being a victim of an employment scam yourself, the BBB says there are a few things you can do. They include noticing if a job posting has grammatical errors or misspellings. If it does, it is usually a scam.The BBB says you should remember that you should never have to pay to get a job or have to provide you credit card and bank account information. Legitimate employers provide a paper check option.Lastly, try to research the company or employer to see if they have had complaints.If you come across a posting that you suspect is a scam or get scammed, report it.“You should go report it, because I did not report mine until months later to the point where another state called me and you don’t want to be scammed the same way,” said Brockman. 2613
