Viruses wreaked havoc on at least 1 million personal computers during the weeklong National Day holiday, according to Jiangmin Co, a leading Chinese antivirus company.The company's monitoring system detected that more than 118,000 computers crashed on October 6 alone."Viruses have been extremely active during the long vacation because more people chose to stay at home and surf the Internet, shopping online or playing online games," He Gongdao, an antivirus expert at Jiangmin, said on Monday."More than 24,000 types of viruses were detected during the week," he said.He said computer users should be more aware of viruses that could be passed on through movable disks.Another antivirus company, Kingsoft, alerted the online community to a new virus it dubbed the "ultimate killer to antivirus software".The virus, a kind of Trojan, is capable of hijacking all kinds of antivirus software when it successfully attacks a computer."It will also automatically search the keywords, including 'antivirus, Kingsoft and Kaspersky', and coercively close the programs, Li Tiejun, an antivirus software engineer of Kingsoft, said."The virus has been supported and spread by a group of people who have developed a systematic and standardized business operation to make profit," Li said. Virus controllers could detect the IP addresses of each computer, he added.The new virus, which affected about 40,000 computers a day, will remain a critical threat to many computer users even after the holiday, Li said.According to the latest survey conducted by the Ministry of Public Security, China has encountered a rising Internet security problem over the past three years, mainly triggered by a growing number of profit-driven computer virus writers, hackers and illegal traders.Some 65.7 percent of 15,000 companies polled had suffered Internet security problems from May last year to May this year, 11.7 percentage points higher than before.

It is the first time that China's top legislature, the National People's Congress Standing Committee, has ruled on open-ended work contracts and severance pay for fired workers.The new law will make it more difficult for companies to hire temporary workers, a practice favored by exporters to cope with fluctuations in orders.One side-effect of the legislation will be higher labor costs for all employers in China. The website of the National Bureau of Corruption Prevention (NBCP) crashed on Tuesday, just hours after its launch, as droves of people logged on to complain about corruption among officials.The website (yfj.mos.gov.cn) was closed for most of the afternoon, Beijing Youth Daily reported.An NBCP official, who did not want to be named, confirmed the breakdown had occurred."Repairs were carried out soon after the website broke down and normal service has now been resumed, he told the Xinhua News Agency."The number of visitors was very large and beyond our expectations," he said.As of 4 pm yesterday, visitors had left 22 pages of messages in the website's guest book.While many of them referred to report specific cases of official corruption, these were redirected by the webmaster to other sites, such as that of the Ministry of Supervision.Other visitors made calls for the strengthening of the government's anti-corruption efforts, and comments about the need for special attention to be given to cases involving institutes of higher education and grassroots governments."The corruption problem in China is a fatal illness. KUNMING -- A gas blast in a private coal mine has killed at least seven miners and injured five in southwest China's Yunnan Province, sources with the local government said Saturday.The blast occurred around 6:00 a.m. Saturday in the Shunxing Coal Mine in Fuyuan Township of Qujing City, in eastern Yunnan. Twenty-seven miners were working underground, and fourteen people managed to escape.More than 400 rescuers struggled to pull out seven bodies and five miners alive. One miner remains missing.The injured workers are being treated in a local hospital.The coal mine, which was built in 1984 with a designed production capacity of 90,000 tons, had been ordered to suspend operation and go through renovation after county coal mine administration staffs inspected the mine on Friday, but coal mine managers secretly organized the miners to work in the night.Local officials are investigating into the cause of the accident.
