BEIJING, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- A recent circular of China's film and television watchdog to cut smoking scenes in films and TV dramas has received welcome from supporters of tobacco control.Xu Guihua, deputy head of China Association on Tobacco Control (CATC), a non-profit organization, said the order of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) demonstrates government determination to protect public health rights."Frequent smoking scenes in films and TV dramas do not accord with China's stance on tobacco control and mislead the public, especially the youth," said the SARFT in a recent circular.Tobacco brands or signs and smoking scenes with juveniles present should not be allowed to appear in films or TV dramas, it said, adding that scenes which have to show smoking should "last as short as possible."Hailing the order, Xu said the communication through media including movies and TV is among those factors that can influence people's attitude toward smoking.Deng Haihua, a spokesman with China's Ministry of Health, also said the SARFT's move will help prevent people, especially the young, from being misled by smoking scenes on screens.In a survey report issued in August 2010, the CATC said it found smoking scenes in 31 movies and 28 TV series after monitoring 40 Chinese movies and 30 local TV series.Another survey by Beijing Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention also showed students tend to follow the fashion after seeing actors smoke on TV or in films.China has more than 300 million smokers and 540 million more suffering from secondhand smoke.What is especially worrisome is that 11.5 percent of the country's juvenile smoke and the ratio is even increasing, according to experts.

BEIJING, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- China plans to sell 600 billion yuan (91 billion U.S. dollars) worth of welfare lotteries from 2011 to 2015, up 73.6 percent from the past five years, an official from the Welfare Lottery Distribution and Management Center (WLDMC) has said.The sales of welfare lotteries posted an annual increase of 18.7 percent over the past five years, from 41.2 billion yuan in 2006 to 96.8 billion in 2010, the official said.The sales totalled 345.53 billion yuan from 2006 to 2010.The center believed that there would be broad prospect for welfare lottery sales with the increase of people's income and the development of philanthropy.According to China's Regulations on Lottery Management, money raised through lotteries is divided into three parts: the jackpot, lottery management fees, and lottery public funds.The government-run lottery raised a total of 30 billion yuan for public welfare funds in 2010, according to the WLDMC statistics.The WLDMC is administered by the Ministry of Civil Affairs, which was authorized by the State Council, or China's Cabinet, to raise welfare funds through lottery sales in 1987.

(IDC) said on Tuesday.A new IDC report showed that worldwide revenues for media tablet and e-reader semiconductors grew by over 2,000 percent to 3. 3 billion U.S. dollars in 2010 as semiconductor suppliers enabled original equipment manufacturers to bring new products to market less than 8 months after Apple Inc. launched its iPad tablet.According to IDC's definition, media tablets are devices with color displays larger than 5-inch and smaller than 14-inch, running lightweight operating systems and able to be based on either x86 or ARM processors."The opportunity for semiconductors in media tablets and e- readers has exploded and semiconductor suppliers are scrambling to bring to market semiconductor and software platforms to enable these products," Michael Palma, a senior research analyst at IDC, said in a statement.Looking forward, IDC said it expects media tablet and e-reader semiconductor revenues to grow by 120 percent year over year in 2011, predicting that the market will be boosted by the arrival of a new version of Google Inc.'s Android operating system, dual core processors and increased bandwidth."For the next several years, we will see rapid innovation cycles for products launched into the marketplace and semiconductor suppliers will continue to satisfy evolving end user requirements over the coming years," Palma noted.

UNITED NATIONS, April 7 (Xinhua) -- To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first human space flight, accomplished on April 12, 1961 by Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, the Russian Permanent Mission to the United Nations, the Russian Federal Space Agency and the ITAR-TASS information agency organized an exhibition which was opened here on Thursday."The first human space flight is not one of the most significant events of the past century, but of human history in general," Vitaly Churkin, the Russian permanent representative to the UN, said at the opening ceremony."It's a symbol of courage, thirst for knowledge, and progress," Churkin said.The exhibition contained archival photos telling the story of the first human space flight and of those who made it possible, and historic pictures of Gagarin.As part of the celebration of human space flight's 50th anniversary the UN Postal Administration designed postal stamps which will be issued on April 12, to tell the story of progress that humankind has made beyond earth's boundaries, as Kiyo Akasaka, Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information put it."Fifty years have passed since that amazing voyage, but the legend of Gagarin's courage and journey to the 'final frontier' continues to be a source of inspiration for space exploration for peoples and nations around the world," Akasaka said at the opening of the exhibition.According to Akasaka, the exhibition "sparks people's imagination about what is possible through the peaceful use and exploration of outer space."Other attendees included Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kotov.Gagarin, also known as the Columbus of the Cosmos, traveled into outer space on the height of the Cold War when the Berlin Wall was built, at a moment when it was hardly impossible to imagine that more than 15 nations would work together in humanity' s permanent space outpost -- the International Space Station.The Russian icon of space spoke the historic words "the earth is blue, how wonderful. BEIJING, May 14 (Xinhua) -- The uranium subsidiary of China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group (CGNPG) has said it is developing two large mines in the mainland.The two mines will be located in south China's Guangdong province and northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, according to Saturday's China Daily.The move is likely to add as much as 1,000 tonnes to the country's annual production capacity of the nuclear fuel."The two mines are expected to start operation in 2013, each with an annual production capacity of no more than 500 tonnes," the newspaper quoted Zhou Zhenxing, chairman of CGNPG Uranium Resources Co (CGNPG-URC) as saying.
