SEATTLE, Wash – Amazon announced Tuesday that it would be launching a billion venture capital fund to invest in companies that are building products, providing services and creating technology to decarbonize the economy and protect the planet from climate change.The company hopes The Climate Pledge Fund will enable it and other companies to meet The Climate Pledge, a commitment to be net carbon neutral by 2040.Amazon co-founded The Climate Pledge with Global Optimism last year. Since then, companies like Verizon, Reckitt Benckiser, and Infosys have also taken the pledge.“The Climate Pledge Fund will look to invest in the visionary entrepreneurs and innovators who are building products and services to help companies reduce their carbon impact and operate more sustainably,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder and CEO. “Companies from around the world of all sizes and stages will be considered, from pre-product startups to well-established enterprises. Each prospective investment will be judged on its potential to accelerate the path to zero carbon and help protect the planet for future generations.”Amazon says the billion will be used to invest in companies in multiple industries, including transportation and logistics, energy generation, storage and utilization, manufacturing and materials, circular economy, and food and agriculture.Over time, Amazon says it will also look for opportunities to involve other Climate Pledge signatories in this venture investment program.“Amazon has demonstrated its leadership in adopting low carbon technologies at scale,” said Rivian CEO R.J. And because of that, entrepreneurs from San Marcos have found a way to fight the problem, and at the same time, help the environment. Jessica Bell says she battled health issues, so she and her husband came up with the idea for safer food containers."It just isn't the way I wanted to live my life," she says in reference to her illnesses.So for one, she decided to eat healthier food, and at the same time, steer away from storing food in plastic containers."I realized I had to take out the things that were contributing to disease. Trying to avoid that contact that food has with those plastic chemicals. We want to be a force for change there.."And the action she took was forming a company with her husband called ReVessel."The idea of a container that can be transported and have all these modular features."Made of stainless steel and silicon, the food storage kits, as they are called, were developed with the help of deep sea engineers. and with one top priority. "Leak proofing," she says. "it's an opportunity for people to carry their lunch anywhere, whether it's in a backpack or purse."But there is more to these storage kits, as they are also environmentally safe."The average number of sandwich bags that children are carrying is about four, and that's daily. Most of them are ending up in the landfill."Jessica calls her kits, "storage anywhere food ware", and with the COVID-19 pandemic, they've teamed up with local restaurants and farms, to deliver healthy food in the kits, to front line workers. "We put together over 200 meals, and we sent these out to front line workers. They can keep these containers and reuse them. (KGTV) - A San Marcos woman is speaking out for the first time about her ,000,000 claim against San Diego County.She told 10News that two sheriff's deputies knocked on her door in the middle of the night last August for a welfare check.  There was no problem and they left but she said Deputy Richard Fischer returned alone an hour later, saying he needed to use her restroom; then told her she was cute and hugged her, several times."It wasn't an okay hug.  I was stunned, shocked.  It was very fast and confusing."She resisted. "Yeah, I felt very vulnerable, intimidated, felt weak. I felt little.  It's just a mess! Everything is a mess!   This is hard to do. He shouldn't have come back to my house and I don't ... everything's a mess!"Three months later, she said she's still frightened."Would I open the door anymore? No. I think he's bad for law enforcement and bad for me. I think he's a bad guy!"Dep. Fischer was placed on administrative duties after the complaint was filed.  An investigation is ongoing, now with two more women talking to investigators.Another San Marcos woman told a similar story.  An Alpine woman said she was arrested on a questionable charge, handcuffed, and fondled while in restraints. 1329

(KGTV) -Business owners in San Ysidro worry that yet another month of restrictions on non-essential travel between the US, Mexico, and Canada could close them for good.For the eighth month in a row, the land borders between the United States and its neighboring countries to the north and south will remain closed to non-essential travel to help limit the spread of COVID-19.Monday U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials confirmed the extension would last through at least December 21st.Geneva Gamez and her family run Tacos La Fronterra in San Ysidro. "It's kind of been a roller coaster ever since. Everything keeps changing," said Gamez. The agreement continues the hold on tourism and recreational trips, but essential business and trade are not affected. Crossing for educational or medical reasons is also permitted. "You don't get much traffic down there unless somebody is going into Mexico or coming back from Mexico," said Gamez.Gustavo De La Fuente is the executive director of the Smart Border Coalition. He said the impact of the restrictions is far-reaching." You're looking at a little over 700 businesses that could close definitely, and that's actually very worrisome," said De La Fuente. The holiday season is when many of the business owners make most of their money."This is the time of the year when 80% or more of their sales are coming for the entire year, their sales are most of their sales are concentrated in these last 5, 6 weeks of the year," said De La Fuente. Gamez hopes people remember the family-owned businesses when they're doing their holiday shopping. "It's affecting part of the San Diego community that's somehow you know isolated, cause it's so close to the border and it's often forgotten, if people could just make the effort if they can, to drive down there or somehow support small businesses in the area, they'd be doing a lot of good for that part of the community." 1946

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) — A man convicted of murder in Honduras was arrested after border agents say he was caught crossing the border with members of a migrant caravan in Tijuana.Miguel Angel Ramirez, 46, was arrested on Nov. 24 around 11 p.m. after he was caught entering the country illegally about a mile east of the San Ysidro Port of Entry, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Two other men traveling with Ramirez were also arrested, one of who had previously been deported, according to CBP.Border agents say Ramirez admitted to being convicted of murder and was released a few months ago. The Honduran Consulate in Los Angeles confirmed he had served 10 years in a Honduras prison for homicide and another 3 years for robbery. He added that he had traveled to the U.S. among the migrant caravan from Honduras, border agents said.RELATED: Mexico's new president could change border policy“It was Border Patrol agents’ effort and valued partnership with the Honduran Consulate in Los Angeles that helped us identify a dangerous convicted felon moving amongst the migrant caravan," San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Rodney Scott said.Ramirez and the two other men, ages 22 and 38, are all Honduran nationals and being held in Department of Homeland Security custody pending deportation proceedings.The arrest was made a day after El Centro border officials say an admitted MS-13 gang member suspected of being in the U.S. illegally was arrested near the Calexico Port of Entry.Border officials said 29-year-old Jose Villalobos-Jobel, of Honduras, told agents he had traveled to the U.S. border within the migrant caravan group as well.
