The COVID-19 pandemic has ensured that holiday gatherings will look a lot different for many this year, and for some parents, it might be difficult to explain why to their children.Children's mental health experts at Children's Hospital Colorado say parents need to be direct with kids about the importance of keeping loved ones safe and healthy.Dr. Jenna Glover says that encouraging kids to share their ideas for family gatherings could help them accept the changes. She adds that parents should also emphasize that smaller gatherings are still worth celebrating."(Parents should) really have their kids focus on what they can control and what is still available to them, rather than on a deficit and what they don't have," Dr. Glover said. "So shifting the perspective to, 'this is what we're grateful for having,' rather than, 'this is why we're sad.'"Doctors say it's important to recognize when children are having a hard time accepting smaller gatherings or missing family members. Children may change how they interact with others or express increased irritability or a desire to be alone. Parents might also notice changes in eating or sleeping habits.Experts say that if behavioral changes get serious enough, parents might want to consider professional help for their kids. And with a rise in telemedicine, getting help is a little easier."If a kid can Zoom in with somebody from their bedroom, laying on their bed flopped over, they might feel a lot more comfortable," Dr. Glover said. "That really informal setting, of being in their own space and being able to connect with somebody and share thoughts that maybe they're not willing to talk about with their parents right now."Dr. Glover says parents should be prepared for their kids to compare how their family celebrates with how their friends are celebrating the holidays. She says it's important to empathize with their children and acknowledge their concerns — but adds that parents should remind kids that the pandemic won't go on forever. 2018

The captain of a duck boat that capsized in July on a Missouri lake, killing 17 people, has been indicted by a federal grand jury in connection with the wreck.Kenneth Scott McKee, 51, faces 17 counts related to "acts of misconduct, negligence or inattention to duty," one for each victim, according to the indictment, which was announced Thursday by the US Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, Tim Garrison. The violations are colloquially known as "seaman's manslaughter," Garrison said.A federal grand jury found that McKee failed to properly assess incoming weather before and while he put the vessel in the water, entered the vessel on the water as severe weather approached, failed to instruct passengers to put on personal flotation devices and operated the duck boat in violation of its conditions and limitations, among other acts, according to the indictment. The federal criminal investigation into the deadly wreck on Table Rock Lake, near the tourist hub of Branson, Missouri, began after the US Coast Guard in July determined the deaths resulted from the captain's actions. The investigation is ongoing, Garrison told reporters Thursday.Ripley Entertainment, which runs the duck boat tours called Ride the Ducks Branson, did not immediately respond Thursday CNN's requests for comment. McKee's attorney, J.R. Hobbs, confirmed to CNN he is reviewing the indictment against his client but is not making any additional comment regarding the allegations.McKee is not in custody, Garrison said, adding that the charges announced Thursday are the first criminal indictments related to the incident. The US attorney would not say whether McKee has been cooperating with the probe. Hobbs said he is in the process of scheduling an initial court appearance by McKee.Survivor Tia Coleman, whose husband, three children and five other relatives were killed in the duck boat wreck, commended Garrison as the indictments were announced."While nothing can ever ease the grief in my heart, I am grateful that the US Attorney's Office is fighting for justice for my family, and the other victims, and is committed to holding fully accountable all those responsible for this tragedy," she said in a statement. In case of a conviction, each count against McKee carries possible prison time of up to 10 years and a fine of as much as 0,000. 2352

The first cruise in the Caribbean since the start of the pandemic is reporting a COVID-19 case.A passenger aboard SeaDream Yacht Club’s SeaDream 1 received a preliminary positive COVID-19 test.According to passengers, the captain informed them about the preliminary positive test over the ship’s intercom system while they were anchored off the coast of Grenadines. The vessel is now headed back to Barbados, where it is based. The SeaDream is carrying 53 passengers and 66 crew, with the majority of passengers hailing from the U.S. according to Sue Bryant, who is aboard the ship and is a cruise editor for The Times and The Sunday Times in Britain. The SeaDream is the first vessel to resume sailing in the Caribbean since earlier this year when coronavirus pandemic concerns docked the cruise industry following high profile infections.Passengers were tested both in advance of traveling, before boarding, and again a few days into the trip. The SeaDream has a capacity of about 110 guests and 95 crewmembers. It also sails outside of U.S. waters. This puts it below the 250 guests threshold and outside the area under the CDC’s orders about cruising. 1159

The Broadway League, the trade association that regulates theater performances in New York City, has said that all performances have been suspended until at least June 2021.Anyone with tickets to Broadway shows before June 2021 "should contact their point of purchase" about exchanges and refunds, the association said.“With nearly 97,000 workers who rely on Broadway for their livelihood and an annual economic impact of .8 billion to the city, our membership is committed to re-opening as soon as conditions permit us to do so. The Daily Mail released leaked footage of the fatal Memorial Day arrest of George Floyd, who died while in the custody of Minneapolis Police. The Daily Mail did not indicate how it received the leaked body worn camera videos of the arrest. Prosecutors told CNN they are working to find the source of the leak. Several media outlets have sued prosecutors in order to gain access to the body-worn camera footage from the officers."The prosecution team is not the source of the leak. We will continue to take the strictest precautions to ensure a fair trial," Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said. The Daily Mail said the footage was taken from the body cameras of Thomas Lane and Alex Kueng. Lane and Kueng along with Derek Chauvin and Tou Thao were fired as officers and criminally charged for Floyd’s death. Chauvin is facing the most serious charges, which include second-degree murder. The other three former officers are being charged with aiding and abetting a second degree murder. Chauvin was the officer that held a knee to Floyd’s neck for several minutes, leading to his death. The footage shows officers pointing weapons at Floyd in order to get him to exit his vehicle and put up his hands. The video then shows Floyd pleading with officers not to shoot him.“I'm not going to shoot you,” Lane says. The footage showed Floyd in an apparent struggle with officers as officers repeatedly asked Floyd to sit.As Chauvin laid on Floyd’s neck, Floyd could be heard telling officers, “Tell my kids I love them. I'm dead.”To view the full video, click here. 1572
