SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As temperatures hit highs across the county's eastern portion, officials are taking annual precautions to close several popular hiking areas.Six county parks will be closed throughout August, including El Capitan Preserve near Lakeside, Hellhole Canyon Preserve in Valley Center, Mt. Gower Preserve near Ramona, Wilderness Gardens in Pala, Agua Caliente Regional Park in Anza Borrego, and Vallecito County Park near Julian.Agua Caliente Regional Park and Vallecito County Park are closed all summer until Labor Day weekend.The closure also gives park staff the chance to perform maintenance and other upgrades and restoration projects.For hiking and park areas that remain open all summer, county Parks and Recreation officials encourage visitors to always hike with others, leave pets at home on difficult hikes, take plenty of water and food, and dress appropriately for the activity. 913

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Border Patrol agents and San Diego Police are at the scene of a possible suspicious device in Otay Mesa, officers confirmed Wednesday.Police said they got a call from Border Patrol about 3 p.m. telling them about a possible threat in a vehicle in a tow yard on the 9000 block of Airway Road.The vehicle had been seized during a drug smuggling investigation, police said.San Diego officers sent canine units to the scene and helped establish a perimeter.California Highway Patrol closed one lane on eastbound I-905 exiting onto SR-125. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Charles Schwab is the latest large investment firm to offer fractional stocks as a way to get more people to invest.The move puts more high-dollar, blue chip stocks within reach for younger customers."It's a big win to consumers in general," says Steven Fox, the owner of Next Gen Financial Planning. "That's particularly helpful for younger investors because they typically tend to have smaller accounts."A recent report says that 66% of millennials say they're afraid of the stock market. Fox thinks it's because that generation watched their parents go through multiple downturns and were turned off by its volatility.But, Fox says fractional stocks, and other new ideas from large companies are enticing more people to invest. He says many firms are starting to offer perks like zero-commission trades, fractional stocks, and on-line based accounts to help people save money and invest more."It may only be 1%, but for a lot of people over a long period of time, as you account grows more and more, that 1% can mean a difference of tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars that you would have available to pull out later in life."Fox says it also helps people keep a more diverse portfolio. He says this is the start of a shift to more direct indexing, where investors will be able to use fractional stocks to create their own groups of investments, rather than buying pre-set mutual funds or indexes."You're gonna see more technology come out that makes it easy to do direct indexing and consumers are going to see more and more options here," says Fox. 1585

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As we continue to work through the pandemic, a couple of Carmel Valley kids are working to spread “some good news” for San Diegans. Brothers Zach and Asher Swazey are putting together their own newscasts.Its called “SGN San Diego.” The newscast is filled with good news.“You want to have something that will affect people in a positive way,” says 13-year-old Zach.The brothers are now working on episode two. They say it was a lot of work putting everything together.“It took us 2-3 weeks,” says ten-year-old Asher. “We went through multiple stages of editing. It took a little of time to make the script and film.”The boys say they were inspired to start SGN San Diego after watching actor and filmmaker John Krasinski on Youtube.The boys say their video is getting more views, but their headline is to make people feel good.“When you’re making a YouTube channel, it’s not about how many likes you get or how many subscribers, it’s how it affects people.”The brothers say their parents are also a big help.
