BEIJING, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor, Jia Qinglin, attended a ground-breaking ceremony for construction of Beijing Hyundai Motor's third auto plant in Shunyi District in suburban Beijing Sunday. LAS VEGAS, the United States, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- China is incredibly important to the success of the global consumer electronics industry, Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) told Xinhua in an interview."There is no doubt that China is a growing powerhouse. China is a global leader in manufacturing and the 'made in China' phrase is known around the world. Chinese manufacturing facilities provide jobs and spur growth not just in China, but around the world as more international companies explore doing business in China," Shapiro said during the 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which was organized by CEA.The 2011 International CES kicked off here on Thursday with more than 2,700 exhibitors unveiling their latest technology innovations, up from the 2010 CES which featured 2,500 exhibitors. A total of 267 exhibitors from China, including major companies such as Haier and Hisense, will display their products at the show.According to CEA and market research company Gfk research, China is expected to contribute 13 percent of global CE retail revenue in 2010, up from 12 percent in 2009."The Chinese consumer technology market is also critical to the success of the International CES," Shapiro said. "China also ranked 3rd in terms of international attendance at the 2010 CES, with 1,105 Chinese industry professionals."However, while a leader in manufacturing, to become a true world leader China must produce innovative companies with brands that are recognized around the world, Shapiro cautioned."In fact, not one Chinese company is included on the Interbrand annual listing of the top 100 global brands. In order for China to truly compete on a global scale, it must change its outlook on the importance of branding."In recent years, many Chinese companies have come far in building their brands. Haier and Hisense are well-known around the globe. In fact, Hisense's Chairman Zhou Houjian delivered a keynote address at the 2010 CES, marking the first time a Chinese company has keynoted at the International CES."For Chinese companies looking to build their brand, there is no better forum to launch an innovative product than a tradeshow such as the International CES, which is the largest branding event in the world," Shapiro said.Shapiro was also optimistic with the prospect of the consumer electronics industry.After a down year in 2009, the consumer electronics industry grew 13 percent last year and is expected to grow an additional 10 percent this year to 964 billion dollars, thanks in large part to demand for smartphones and notebook computers, the CEA forecast. The group expects electronics sales to grow in all major markets around the world but to be especially strong in Western Europe, North America and China."Due to the economic downturn, consumers around the world have been cautious in their purchase patterns. However, CEA research finds that individuals view consumer electronics products as necessities rather than luxury goods, reinforcing the strength of our industry even in a down economy," he said.CEA is a U.S. trade association promoting growth in the consumer technology industry. It represents more than 2,000 corporate members involved in the design, development, manufacturing, distribution and integration of consumer electronics products. As a U.S.-based trade association, all CEA members must have offices in the United States, however CEA also has 40 associate member companies based in China.

BEIJING, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Public Security (MPS) on Sunday ordered traffic police nationwide to prepare for possible traffic disruptions caused by a lingering cold snap.The cold weather that has stopped traffic on national highways in several central and southern provinces since New Year's Day is likely to last ten more days.At a national meeting on coping with traffic disruptions during the cold snap, vice public security minister Huang Ming said local traffic police should be prepared to control and solve traffic problems that icy weather and sleet might cause.Further, local traffic police should make realistic emergency plans, prepare emergency supplies and equipment for de-icing and removing snow, and quickly handle traffic accidents, he said.He added that road closures should be the last choice in handling poor road conditions caused by freezing weather. Additionally, local traffic police should take other measures such as temporarily opening roads to ensure traffic flows.The recent inclement weather is a reminder of the disastrous freezing winter at the beginning of 2008, which stopped traffic, damaged power grids, and disrupted lives of millions in southern China.However, experts believe China is unlikely to suffer similar conditions this winter because of inadequate moisture.

BEIJING, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- China will carry out the House Sale Price Statistical Scheme in 2011, after soliciting opinions via the internet earlier this year, said Ma Jiantang, head of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Thursday.Ma made the remarks at a national statistics work conference, saying the bureau had accepted suggestions from various departments and experts and would work steadily reform the method of calculating the country's house sale prices in 2011."We'll further work with real estate departments, make full use of their network data, and check the authenticity of the data to further push forward the statistical scheme reform," Ma said.The NBS was committed to improve the scheme at the beginning of the year. It released the draft plan on September 25, which said prices, floor areas, and sales of newly-constructed houses in 35 major cities would be based upon data from local real estate departments, instead of independent research.Ma said that the bureau is working on 4 key systems, including building a database for basic surveyed units, one set of standards for surveyed enterprises, data collecting and processing software systems, and direct reporting network systems."The four systems are aimed to guarantee the authenticity, integrity and timeliness of the data," he said.By 2012, above-scale enterprises, above-norm wholesale and retail accommodations and catering businesses, construction enterprises, and real estate enterprises will be able to submit their data directly to a national data center, said the NBS.Also, about 550 cities across the country will use personal digital assistants (PDA) to collect data for the consumer price index (CPI), a major gauge of inflation, as well as farm produce prices, by the end of 2012, the NBS said. 

BEIJING, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese auditors found 142 million yuan (21 million U.S. dollars) were wrongly paid to central government departments as reimbursements of fake invoices in June this year, and now 68.31 percent of the funds, or 97.37 million yuan, had been recovered.The remaining fake invoices, valued at 45.03 million yuan, have been transferred to supervisory organs or judicial authorities for further investigation, according to a report submitted Wednesday to the 18th session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), running from Dec. 20 to 25.A total of 5,170 invoices were confirmed fake among the 29,363 "problematic" invoices by 56 central departments, says the report.According to the report, China's National Audit Office (NAO) had recovered 5.34 billion yuan of funds which were found embezzled in 2009, by the end of October this year.A total of 95 officials were arrested, prosecuted, or convicted in the process, and 1,103 received disciplinary punishments, says the report.
