You see the spellers on the stage at Scripps National Spelling Bee, but there’s a critical player in the competition who you hear more than see.Dr. Jacques Bailly is the Bee’s official pronouncer, and to the spellers, he’s a celebrity. Participants lined up to meet the man many saw in the movie, Akeelah and the Bee, and who records the words many of them have studied.“It's really kind of an honor that they all come here, and they think I’m, you know, somebody famous and interesting to meet,” says Dr. Bailly. “We're here to honor them.”Dr. Bailly has a keen understanding of what the spellers are going through.He won the Bee in 1980 and has some tips for spellers taking the stage.“The way to spell a word you don't know: you spell it the way it sounds,” he advises. “Don't make a fancy guess. Don't assume there's a silent ‘Q’ because there aren't very many of those you know just felt the way it sounds. That's kind of the best guess.”His advice for beating the jitters?“I think a deep breath is one of the best things,” he says. “It's just, you know, to feel free, to get up there and go. (AP) — Scientists say they have found an elusive chameleon species that was last spotted in Madagascar 100 years ago.Researchers from Madagascar and Germany said Friday they've discovered several living specimens of Voeltzkow’s chameleon during an expedition to the northwest of the African island nation.A team led by scientists from the Bavarian Natural History Collections said genetic analysis determined that the species is closely related to Labord’s chameleon.“These animals are basically the mayflies among vertebrates,” said Frank Glaw, curator for reptiles and amphibians at the ZSM, told the AP.Researchers believe that both reptiles only live during the rainy season. They hatch from eggs, grow rapidly, spar with rivals, mate, and then die during a few short months."The assumed short life might also partly explain why this splendid species got 'lost' for many decades, since most roads in its habitat are not accessible in the wet season," researchers wrote in a report in the journal Salamandra. 1019

With schools in Michigan closed during the spread of COVID-19, Grand Traverse Academy Principal Michelle Floering still wanted to deliver good news to a student in person. Floering decided to pay a visit to student Kaitlyn Watson who was working at a drive thru restaurant in Traverse City, Michigan. Floering informed Watson in person that she is the school’s class of 2020 valedictorian. “Thank you so much, I am so excited,” Watson said.“I couldn’t wait to come tell you,” Floering responded.
