Atlanta police released images late Sunday of a second person of interest in the fatal shooting of an 8-year-old girl on the Fourth of July. Authorities are also offering a ,000 reward for information in the death of Secoriea Turner. At least two shooters were believed to be responsible for her death. Police had released a short video of the first person of interest last week. Photos were released Sunday night of the second person of interest.According to Crime Stoppers in Atlanta, the preliminary investigation suggests the young girl was riding in a car with her mother and an adult friend when they were confronted by a group of people blocking the entrance to a parking lot. At some point, someone in the group opened fire on the car, hitting it several times and striking the child. The driver headed to a nearby hospital, and Turner died from her injuries. Both persons of interest are seen in the images carrying rifles. The fatal shooting happened near the Wendy's where Rayshard Brooks was shot and killed by a police officer. 1051

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Faculty and staff at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan are being trained to fight active shooters in a unique way – by using hockey pucks. University police are conducting the training sessions, which were organized by the OU Union and the American Association of University Professors, to improve classroom safety for all. The use of hockey pucks allows those vulnerable to an active shooter attack to fight back with something heavy that will also cause a distraction, according to OU Police Chief Mark Gordon. "Hockey pucks provide the ability to be carried in briefcases or backpacks, are not considered a weapon and will meet the goal of distracting the shooter,” Gordon said. The OU Union has distributed hockey pucks to 800 of its members and will distribute an additional 1,700 pucks to students. "Part of the strategy for fighting is you need to create a distraction to give yourself time as a group in a classroom to rush the gunman so you can get your hands on the gun and take it away from the shooter," Gordon said.Although police and organizers find the pucks to be a good solution to the threat of a mass shooting, some students on campus disagree."I found it, at first, absurd," said Adam Kalajian, a third-year student at OU. "What good will it do? I mean, there’s an armed person coming in, why would you chuck a puck at them? What’s it going to do? Nothing." Jacob Gora, a fifth-year senior, echoed the same sentiment. "If I was to give you a puck and I had a gun, would I be able to take you out easily?" Gora asked. "I mean, a puck isn’t going to distract me or stop me from shooting someone."According to a release, the pucks also serve a second purpose. They're being used as a fundraising tool to equip all campus classroom doors with a lock that can be used without exiting the room in the event of an emergency. Already, ,000 has been raised for interior classroom locks through donations from the union and the Oakland University Student Congress. To view OU's active shooter guidelines, click here. Attorneys for former FBI Director James Comey and the US House of Representatives fought in court Friday afternoon over whether Comey must testify to Congress in a private hearing next week. While Comey technically seeks to pause or kill the subpoena, he is using the case to air his accusation that members of the Republican-led House and Senate selectively leak details for their own benefit when they call witnesses to testify in private.Attorneys for the House called Comey's request "so extraordinary and frivolous that, as far as undersigned counsel is aware, no district court in the history of the Republic has ever granted such a request."Judge Trevor McFadden said at the hearing that he hoped to rule Monday morning after meeting again with both legal teams. The meat of Friday's dispute was how each side characterizes Comey's congressional subpoena. Comey's team says Congress is in violation of its own rules by not conducting its fact-finding hearing in public. The hearing won't require that level of secrecy because no sensitive law enforcement information is expected to be discussed, Comey's team said. The House general counsel countered that because Comey's testimony would be a deposition with staff, a public session isn't required.McFadden asked whether Comey could release a transcript of his testimony to get the full picture before the public. But Comey's lawyers said that would take too much time, allowing leaks of the information before Comey could release his full testimony. When McFadden asked Comey's attorney whether he agreed with the House that a judge has never limited Congress in this way before, the lawyer David Kelley responded, "Here's your opportunity, Judge."Comey has said he would like to testify publicly about the separate investigations into Hillary Clinton's email practices and Russian interference in the 2016 election -- in front of live TV cameras as he has done before."The broader purpose of these tweets and leaks appears to be to mislead the public and to undermine public confidence in the FBI and the DOJ during a time when President Trump and members of his administration and campaign team are reported to be under investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller and other law enforcement authorities," Comey wrote in his complaint. He says he is a "victim" of Congress' "unauthorized and abusive tactics."Comey did not attend Friday's hearing in person. He has asked the judge to issue an emergency order to pause the congressional proceedings and to quash the subpoena. In theory, Comey could lose his court challenge and still win what he's seeking, if he manages to convince the judge to pause his subpoena until the House flips to Democratic control at year's end.The case initially was set to be heard by Judge Timothy Kelly, a Trump appointee, then was reassigned randomly to McFadden, also a Trump appointee, after Kelly likely recused from the case. 2941

At Tivoli Brewing Company, canning beer has gone from celebratory to an almost sobering experience.“This sucks,” said Ethan Tsai, Tivoli brewery director.Tsai says Tivoli and other breweries across the country are suffering from an aluminum can shortage.“We don’t have enough cans, we’re not going to be able to sell enough beer,” he said. “This is going to be a financial pinch to a whole lot of people.”On a normal week, Tivoli would turn out almost 400 cases of beer. During the last few of weeks, however, they’re struggling to get out 100.“Sales is going to suffer,” Tsai said. “And if sales suffer, then our ability to survive is going to be jeopardized.”Experts say there are several reasons for this shortage in cans. More people are stocking up on beer in stores and taking it home during the COVID crisis and less customers are going out to bars and restaurants.Whatever the case, production of cans isn’t keeping up with the demand.“For the year 2020,” Tsai said, “Ball (Corporation) is estimating approximately 10 billion, that’s billion with a “B”, aluminum can shortage."Ball Corporation is one of the world’s leading aluminum can providers. It’s responding to the recent surge in demand for cans by expanding its operations and building two news production plants which they say should be completed by 2021.“It might mean that some brewers get less revenue and have to make more difficult choices,” said Bart Watson, chief economist with the Brewers Association, an organization representing thousands of craft breweries across the country. He says cans make up a majority of craft beer packaged sales and that this shortage of could cost companies money and employees their jobs.“It’s tough to see the small brewers, who put so much sweat equity into their businesses, be brought down by really something that not their fault,” Watson said. “First the pandemic and now these additional challenges like a shortage.”Back at the brewery, Tsai is trying to figure out how to logistically juggle this shortage of cans during a pandemic to make sure his staff still have jobs and that this brewery survives.“We are all in this together,” he said. “None of us benefit from just taprooms suddenly disappearing.” 2226

ATLANTA — Georgia's legislature on Tuesday passed hate crimes legislation deemed essential by state leaders, sending the measure to Gov. Brian Kemp's desk.Georgia is currently one of four states in the U.S. without hate crime laws. The price Republicans exacted for moving that legislation forward was the simultaneous passage of a bill that would mandate penalties for crimes targeting police and other first responders. The action comes after Senate Republicans had added police as a protected class to the hate crimes legislation last week, but then moved those protections to a separate bill in a deal between the parties.Kemp's office said in a statement that he'd sign the hate crimes bill, pending a legal review. The bill's passage comes amid weeks-long protests against systemic racism throughout the country. The protests were sparked by the death of George Floyd, who died in police custody in Minneapolis after bystander video showed an officer kneeling on his neck for more than eight minutes. The passage also comes weeks after three arrests were made in connection with the shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery. The 25-year-old Arbery was killed in Burnswick, Georgia in February, and his case changed jurisdictions several times due to one of the suspect's connections with the local District Attorney's office. It wasn't until days after a video of the altercation leaked to the public in May that two of the men, Gregory and Travis McMichael, were arrested and charged with murder. A third man, William "Roddy" Bryan, was also charged with murder a few weeks later. 1582
