SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Friends of the Marine hit and killed in the Midway area said Monday the driver who struck him and left is a coward.Victor Molinar, 18, of Chicago had just graduated from boot camp and was stationed at Camp Pendleton about to start combat training. Ricardo Camacho met him in basic training and got the terrible news over the weekend.“He was a good kid, always say making people laugh. He had a good head on his shoulders. From the start when I met him, I knew he’d be a good Marine," said Camacho.Molinar was out with his friends Saturday night visiting the local night spots on Midway Drive and somehow got separated from his friends. They went to look for him and found his body in the road.Police say the driver who hit Molinar fled the scene. No suspect has been identified.“He was willing to give up his life defending his country and do all the right things and for him to do that and not even stopping to see who it was? It just sucks," Camacho said.Camacho told 10News the Marines have a buddy system and doesn’t know why Molinar was by himself. Police are looking for the suspect, but have little to go on right now. Camacho, who is having a hard time coping with his loss, told 10News he knows one thing about the suspect. “He’s a coward. Bottom line. Karma plays a big part in things, and he’ll get his. If he ran then he won’t come forward they’ll just have to find him. If he didn't do it then. He won’t come forward. Just like cowards do, they run.”Molinar's sister said she is devastated by the loss of her brother. He also leaves behind a girlfriend in Chicago. 1606

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For 250,000 low-income children in San Diego County, a healthy breakfast and lunch are provided by their schools. In most cases, that stops during the summer, and now more than ever, that's a problem."For all too many San Diego children, summertime brings about hunger," says Vince Hall. Hall is the CEO of Feeding San Diego, and this is where his organization steps in partnering with the state's Pandemic EBT program. This summer, each eligible child receives a one-time payment of 5 for groceries from the State of California. And for a school like Lexington Elementary in El Cajon, this program is a necessity. "98% of our students are socioeconomically disadvantaged," says Lesley Ezop. Ezop is the interim principal at Lexington Elementary. It's one of 11 food distribution points that Feeding San Diego partners with to offer children much needed nutrition throughout the summer."Just so that kids can have the basics so that they can learn and can function," adds Ezop. "When kids have what they need, they're going to succeed, right?" But the program doesn't stop there. The children aren't the only ones facing hunger. Feeding San Diego knows if the student needs food assistance, then the entire family needs it. So the organization partners with local schools to provide meals for the whole family. "If we provide food to youth and not to the adults, that food is just going to be divided, and the effect of our initiative is going to be diminished," says Hall. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For most of the year, a favorite Ladera Street surf spot has been closed after part of the cliff gave way. After the cliff collapsed the City declared an emergency situation because lifeguards have raised concerns about having access to the beach. In a City Council meeting Monday, a decision was made to fast-track a project that will stabilize the cliff by scaling it back. Members of the Sunset Cliffs Natural Park Advisory Board want to the City to find a different solution. "This is just a temporary fix but it's causing permanent damage to the whole cliffside," said Point Loma resident Aaron Taylor. Aside from urging the City to spend more time on the issue, there are some on the committee who think the access point should be moved to another location altogether."You go down the stairs now you're in the tidal zone you're in a danger zone," said Kim Haynes. "Whereas the stairs, if they were moved farther south, it would empty you to a beach except at extreme high tide."Councilmember Lorie Zapf issued this statement to 10News about her decision to support the project: 1131

San Diego (KGTV) -- Hotel guest jolted awake after the Howard Johnson by Wyndham caught fire, early Tuesday morning.The fire erupted around 4:15 a.m. on El Cajon Blvd in the College East neighborhood.One of the rooms was destroyed, and two others were severely damaged, according to firefighters. At least 4 to 5 units are reported to be uninhabitable for various reasons.It took about 20 minutes to knock down the fire.One man staying in the unit right next to the fire, told ABC 10News he had to run right past the flames to escape.The entire hotel was evacuated, and everyone managed to get out safely. No one was hurt.Firefighters are trying to figure out if anyone was inside the unit when it caught fire. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Extreme wind and heat is causing a school district along the San Diego coast to close early Friday. The Coronado Unified School District announced Thursday that the district will be on a minimum day Friday as heat reaches into the 90s. A minimum day means that all schools will begin at their regular times, but end the day at 12:30 p.m. Friday will mark the second day the district will let out early as heat scorches the region. RELATED: Check today's San Diego County forecastThe Sweetwater Union High School District also announced Thursday that the City of Chula Vista canceled fireworks shows at homecoming games amid the dry weather. “Attention #SUHSD communities @ CPH, HTH, ORH & MOH. The City of CV & SD have cancelled permits for fireworks displays for this Friday’s Homecoming games. We are aware fireworks are a time-tradition, however due to concerns of severe dry weather, we have been advised against them,” the district said in a tweet.
