In a move to advance high-quality enterprise journalism, the Scripps Howard Foundation today announced a million investment into the creation of two centers for investigative journalism.Arizona State University and the University of Maryland will each receive million over three years from the Scripps Howard Foundation to establish a Howard Center for Investigative Journalism at their institutions.The Howard Centers will be multidisciplinary, graduate-level programs focused on training the next generation of reporters through hands-on investigative journalism projects. The Howard Centers’ students will work with news organizations across the country to report stories of national or international importance to the public.The Howard Centers honor the legacy of Roy W. Howard, former chairman of the Scripps-Howard newspaper chain and a pioneering news reporter.“Roy Howard was an entrepreneur whose relentless pursuit of news took him around the world, sourcing his education directly from the lessons of the newsroom,” said Liz Carter, president and CEO of the Scripps Howard Foundation. “That same pursuit led us to establish the Howard Centers – bridging the classroom and the newsroom to ensure tomorrow’s journalists are prepared with the mastery of dogged reporting they need in a world that increasingly demands it.”Arizona State and the University of Maryland were selected as locations for the Howard Centers based on proposals submitted in a competitive process. House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes warned Sunday that he plans to urge lawmakers "this week" to hold Attorney General Jeff Sessions in contempt of Congress for failing to hand over classified materials related to the Russia investigation.But the Justice Department informed Nunes three days ago -- on the deadline for responding to a subpoena from Nunes' committee -- that providing the information on a "specific individual" could pose grave implications for national security, according to a letter obtained by CNN."Disclosure of responsive information to such requests can risk severe consequences, including potential loss of human lives, damage to relationships with valued international partners, compromise of ongoing criminal investigations, and interference with intelligence activities," wrote Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd, who heads the Justice Department's Office of Legislative Affairs.It was not immediately clear why Nunes has targeted Sessions. A source familiar with the matter said that the request falls squarely within Sessions' recusal from all materials related to the Russia investigation. Nine months ago, they were surprised with a donation of 1,800 books, made by 10News employees and the Scripps Howard Foundation. Each child was able to select two books of their own, with the rest going to the library and classrooms. “Last year, I didn't like to read. But this year I love to read," said 7-year-old Diego. His favorite book is "Hoot Hoot".“It's about owls. They're having a little party," he said.Seven-year-old Adriana loves the adventure of a good book. “My favorite thing about reading is you can imagine stuff while you're reading the book," she said. Her favorite book is "My Weird School". Principal Melissa Griffith says the books have made all the difference to students.“The opportunity for them to learn sounds, to learn words, to take adventures within books, there's really nothing like it and it's so beneficial for our students," said Griffith. “Our students enjoy the books greatly. House Speaker Paul Ryan found out that he is part Jewish as part of the upcoming season of PBS' show "Finding Your Roots."The show's host, Henry Louis Gates Jr., shared the Wisconsin Republican's reaction to discovering his roots during a panel on Tuesday."You could have knocked him over with a feather and then he was very proud of it," Gates, who also serves as an executive producer on the show, said during the Television Critics Association press tour in Los Angeles.A publicist for the show confirmed Gates' comments during the panel, and Ryan's upcoming appearance on the show, in an email to CNN."We don't know who that Jewish person was, but we know it was on his mother's German line, which makes sense," Gates continued.
