(KGTV) -- Two local families are now connected in a special way, thanks to Lifesharing, the organ donation group serving San Diego and Imperial Counties. Lifesharing arranged a meeting between a North County family and the man who received their son’s heart.Mathieu Bergeron died last May after a tragic skateboarding accident. The 20-year-old was a registered organ donor.Bergeron’s heart saved the life of Dr. Murray Alsip, who was suffering from a heart condition that made it difficult to walk and, at times, to even breathe.Alsip said he had “one foot in the grave” before he was saved by Bergeron’s precious gift.The family meeting was both joyful and emotional. (KGTV) -- Southern California businesses have come out in force to help those forced to evacuate due to the Holy Fire.Some places are even being forced to turn away donations because they’ve received too many.Thursday, the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station posted a message on Facebook asking the community to stop donating. A bakery in Baltimore, Maryland is going beyond making goods.The goal at The Samaritan Women bakery is to shape young women into professionals.The women also call this place home. The residents of The Samaritan Women are all survivors of sex trafficking and abuse.“What our program does is provide that first real world working experience,” says Jeanne Allert, the organization’s founder.Allert founded the organization in 2007. Her goal was to provide safe, long-term housing, and vocational programs, like the bakery, to women across America who have suffered the unthinkable.The goal is to not only to develop life skills, but to create a recipe to a new woman.Rosylyn Lindneris, who is on the staff, says learning basic work skills is important, because most of the women have never had a real job. "Our biggest wish is that her personhood, her humanity, gets restored,” says Allert. 900

(KGTV) - Suspected drug smugglers were rescued by U.S. Coast Guard crews this month after their vessel erupted into flames before sinking.Crews from the Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations (AMO), the U.S. Navy ship USS Zephyr, and the Colombian Navy ship ARC "07 de Agosto" detected the high-speed vessel on April 7 in the eastern Pacific Ocean.As crews prepared to intercept the vessel, the suspected smugglers allegedly began abandoning their cargo and jumped from the boat as it caught fire.Crews rescued four suspected smugglers and spent 90 minutes extinguishing the flames."There was no doubt in our minds what needed to be done to salvage the evidence needed for a successful prosecution even if it meant laying Zephyr alongside a burning hull, with the intense heat and acrid smoke hindering our 90-minute firefight," Lt. Cmdr. Grant Greenwell, the commanding officer of the Zephyr, said.After putting out the fire, crews say they recovered about 1,080 pounds of cocaine. The four suspected smugglers were transferred to custody aboard the Zephyr.The suspected drug vessel was severely damaged and sunk as it was a hazard to navigation. 1195
