SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two UC San Diego Health workers have tested positive for COVID-19, officials with the medical system announced Saturday.UCSD Health said in a statement that the workers "are recuperating at home and doing well," officials said."Both infected health workers sought medical assessment after exhibiting key respiratory symptoms, and were tested," according to UCSD Health.University officials cite "exposure and infection in the community" as reasons for the workers contracting the virus, rather than from travel or a patient."UC San Diego Health has launched an extensive effort to identify any patients or health system colleagues who may have been in recent contact with either of the two health workers," officials said.The group operates three hospitals: UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest, Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla, and Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center also in La Jolla. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two inmate deaths in San Diego detention facilities this year are being attributed to drug overdoses and called accidental.The first occurred on July 20 at the San Diego Central Jail, where Michael Hossfeld, 41, was found unresponsive in his cell, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department. Deputies began life-saving measures and Hossfeld was taken to a nearby hospital, where he remained in a coma and on life support until Aug. 3.The county medical examiner this week determined Hossfeld had died from anoxic encephalopathy due to acute fentanyl toxicity and ruled his death an accident.Hossfeld had been in custody for 691 days and was charged with multiple crimes, including robbery.On Aug. 26, deputies at George Bailey Detention Facility found Jose Sevilla, 39, unresponsive in his cell. Deputies began CPR, but he was pronounced dead shortly after he was found.The medical examiner report said that Sevilla died from acute heroin intoxication and his death was also deemed an accident.Sevilla had been in jail since May 30 on drug- and theft-related charges.SDSO did not provide any further information regarding the deaths.According to the Associated Press, there have been at least 13 in-custody deaths in San Diego jails this year. 1275

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A second man has been charged in the smuggling of a Bengal tiger cub into the United States from Mexico on August 23, 2017.Eriberto Paniagua - who allegedly told officials at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry that the Bengal tiger cub at his feet was merely a “cat” - was indicted by a federal grand jury and made his first court appearance on Monday. According to the indictment unsealed today, the 21-year-old conspired with the driver of the car, 18-year-old Luis Valencia, and others to knowingly import the tiger cub into the United States. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Whether or not the Padres head to the World Series, Petco Park may still see playoff baseball this season.Under a plan by the MLB, a neutral-site playoff format with teams living in a "bubble" may be finalized next week, though it is awaiting approval by the Players Association, according to ESPN.The plan states that playoffs would start with the top four seeds in the AL and NL hosting all the games in a best-of-three wild-card series: the AL games between Sept. 29 and Oct. 1 and the NL games between Sept. 30 and Oct. 2.The highest AL seed would be the home team for the division series at Petco Park in San Diego, while the other series heads to Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The AL championship series would then be played at Petco Park.On the NL side, the top seed into the division series would play at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, and the next-highest seed would play at Minute Maid Park in Houston. The NL championship series would be hosted in Arlington.The MLB's reported plan would begin the World Series on Oct. 20 at Arlington and end no later than Oct. 28.ESPN reports that the Players Association is considering concerns from players who have lived outside of the bubble format, similar to how the NBA has operated this season, with the ability to be around family and friends.
