BEIJING, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Police authorities in Beijing launched a microblog, blogs and a podcast on Sunday in the latest move in its public relations campaign.This came about half a month after police in the Chinese capital set up a public relations office to enhance transparency and interaction with residents.The Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau officially launched its new media services at the news portals sina.com, sohu.com and 163.com and video-sharing site ku6.com after a three-day trial.The services, branded as "Safe Beijing", offer a new communication channel between police and the general public. Microblogs, for example, have become a quick and popular source of news and information for increasingly more Chinese citizens.Fu Zhenghua, head of the bureau, said last month that law enforcement activities could easily be hot topics in the media and among the public in this highly open and transparent Internet era."With the aid of modern technology, we hope to communicate with residents and vulnerable groups with frankness and sincerity, as well as promote social justice," said Fu.In the first microblog post, the bureau pledged to offer the latest police affairs news, anti-fraud tips and stories of model community police.The bureau has posted dozens of practical anti-fraud and anti-theft tips and police affairs news, including training programs for special police and stories about model police officers serving their first day on the police force.More than 17,600 people logged onto the microblog service on Sunday and some posts received hundreds of comments.Most welcomed the services, saying it can bridge the gap between police and average citizens and change the traditionally mysterious and superior image of police officers."This is really a good thing. NEW YORK, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill to recognise Nanjing City of China as a "Model for International Cooperation" in order to award the city's active involvement in cooperation with the United States in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, and this was the first Chinese city to win such an award, Li Jiansheng, executive chairman of the U.S.-China Partnership Committee, told Xinhua on Thursday.The House passed the bill, tabled by Representative John Tierney of Massachusetts, on Tuesday night, Li said, adding that this will pave the way for further cooperation between China and the United States in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, which are very conducive to build a stronger China in the future."I rise today to speak about a model for international cooperation that is said to hold promise and future opportunities for the United States," Tierney said when he was taking the floor at the House. TAIYUAN/HARBIN, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in an explosion at a coal mine in Linfen City of north China's Shanxi Province early Saturday has risen to 17 after another two bodies were found, local authorities said.The blast at Liugou Coal Mine of Yicheng County also left 104 persons injured, seven of them seriously, as of 11 p.m. Saturday, said Wang Jianshe, head of the county's People's Hospital, where all the injured were admitted.All the injured are in stable condition, Wang said.Basic search and rescue work is over, said a senior official of Yangquan Coal Industry (Group) Co. Ltd, which owns the mine. The official said that the blast took place in the dormitory area, where most of buildings were destroyed by the powerful explosion.A miner surnamed Zhang told Xinhua that families of many miners had come to live here because the children were currently on their summer vacation.But officials so far have not disclosed how many children and women had died during the accident.Zhang said he saw a couple died after huge stones fell on them in a dormitory room.Initial investigation showed that the blast was caused by explosives hidden illegally in the area, and a suspect has been detained by the police, the official said.A further Investigation into the cause of the blast is underway.Also on Saturday, 24 people were trapped in a flooded coal mine in northeast China's Jixi City, Heilongjiang Province.The city government said the accident at Hengxinyuan Mine took place at around 5 p.m. Saturday. BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Food poisoning in China killed 56 and sickened 2,452 others between January and May this year, the Ministry of Health said here Wednesday.In a report posted on its website, the ministry said 27 people, about half of the deaths, were killed by food poisoning at home.The deaths were mainly caused by the consumption of poisonous vegetables and pesticide- or poison-contaminated food.There were 68 cases of food poisoning at employee and student cafeterias nationwide in the five months resulting in the poisoning of almost 1,650 people and the deaths of 18. Bacteria-induced food poisoning and improperly cooked kidney beans were the main causes.Seven people were killed by excessive intakes of nitrite, a substance with an appearance similar to salt which can be used as a meat preservatives.The report urged food manufacturers to ensure food safety in accordance with law and called on the public to raise food safety self-awareness levels.
