SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - New technology is offering schools another weapon in the battle against vaping and e-cigarettes.At this week's National Conference on Education, Soter Technologies is promoting its FlySense machine. It's similar to a smoke detector but tuned to sense vaping byproducts in the air."We can determine if a flavor is in the air, if THC is in the air, or if nicotine is in the air," says CEO Derek Peterson. "The device can determine what's in the air, whether someone's using a jewel pen, vaping, or an old fashioned e-cigarette, or a regular cigarette."The device then sends an alert to cell phones of nearby teachers and administrators so they can respond. Peterson says they've already sold 7,000 FlySense devices around the country, including 1,000 in California.It's helping schools fight a growing epidemic. A recent study in the Journal of American Medicine says 5.3 million teenagers admit to using e-cigarettes. The CDC says they're harmful to kids and adults and can be addictive."Kids get hooked on the vaping pens because of the nicotine content," says Peterson. "They think it's cool. And then before you know it, they're trapped. They're hooked on the nicotine. They can't get off."In addition to the FlySense machine, Peterson's company gives schools an educational curriculum to teach the dangers of nicotine and vaping. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Once election results start to come in, some of the races could be so close to call that they could lead to legal battles in court. Eugene Volokh, a constitutional law professor at UCLA, explained that it is likely some races could be so close that we won't know the results for a few days, maybe even weeks. When it comes to the presidential race, Volokh said that if the results are a landslide, the likelihood of legal challenges are close to none. If it's a tight race, Volokh said we could see litigation in states where it is just too close to call. Recounts are also possible, but the professor said that it wouldn't be a national recount; instead, it would only focus on the states that have tight races. Across the country, there have already been some legal battles. In Houston, a federal judge refused to invalidate nearly 127,000 drive-thru mail-in ballots following a lawsuit filed by a group of Republicans. In Nevada, a judge rejected another GOP lawsuit aiming to stop early voting over signature-matching software and observers when votes are being counted. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Public health experts are worried that with COVID-19 cases surging, family gatherings during the upcoming holiday season could make for an epidemiological disaster. While officials are urging people to follow stay-at-home orders and avoid indoor gatherings with those outside of the immediate household, they realize that many families will get together regardless of the risk.“There are a lot of reasons why don’t do the thing that your physician or your county board of supervisors would label compliant," said Dr. Rebecca Fielding-Miller, a social epidemiologist and associate professor at UC San Diego. "And so the best thing that we can do is say, OK. In the absence of perfection, here are the other things you can do to protect yourself.”Fielding-Miller recommends that a family that insists on getting together for Thanksgiving create, in effect, its own version of a bubble such as the one successfully used for the restart of the NBA season. To create the safest bubble possible requires invitees to the dinner to isolate beginning at least by Wednesday the week before Thanksgiving. Each person should then get a COVID test three days before the holiday so there is enough time to get the result back. Fielding-Miller said it's critical to have a conversation with guests to make sure they understand and agree to those safety measures. "When we talk about bubbles, your bubble is really only as safe as the person who is the least interested in maintaining the safety of the bubble," Fielding-Miller said.Once Thanksgiving Day arrives, eating outdoors is much safer than indoors. Fielding-Miller also suggests trying to keep members of different households spaced out as much as possible. It is also critical to wear masks as much as possible.She also said that safety efforts do not end on Thanksgiving Day. "You need a plan for, I would say, testing five to eight days after you spent time with your family, so you can immediately let people know if you are positive and they need to get tested,” Fielding-Miller said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Quiet neighborhood walks have turned disturbing for a growing number of women in Rancho Bernardo.Along Paseo Lucido, feet from a park, Lauren was walking her dog one early evening two weeks ago. She walked past the passenger side of an older, white, 2-door Toyota."The front windows were down and the seat was back ... looked over inside the car and saw he was exposing himself and touching himself," said Lauren.'He' was a large man in his 30s with short dark hair."He smiled when he saw me looking. I immediately looked away. Just very anxious and scared," said Lauren.Lauren took off for a neighbor's house. When she returned minutes later, the car was gone. About a week later - around 6:30 a.m. last Thursday - Robbie was blocks away on Avenida Venusto when a similar car, driven by a man with a similar description, pulled ahead of her and parked in a red zone."Kind of slouched back. He has his pants down, and he's actively touching himself," said Robbie.And again, the stranger met a woman's glance before driving off."And he looked up at me with a big smile on his face," said Robbie.
