Retail giants like Kohl’s and Target have announced huge holiday openings, with Kohl’s planning to hire 90,000 holiday associates. Target is also opening up 130,000 seasonal jobs. Although big box stores are hiring a lot of seasonal employees, local businesses are also increasing staffing. Rick Mitchell, owner of the Pumpkin Station Pumpkin Patch in Del Mar says he hires around 200 temporary workers in October – from high school students to retired veterans. According to experts, if you’re looking to cash in on seasonal work, the time to look is now. Sarah Burns with San Diego Workforce Partnership says adding a personal touch will help you stand out in the seasonal job market. “Can you go in person and introduce yourself to the manager. Say hi, I’m so and so and I’m really interested in working here. That will go a long way in a customer service focused industry,” Burns said. And that includes a local pilot, who helping those workers, that help him to get off the ground. Anthony Oshinuga became interested in becoming a pilot when he was 5-years old, and now he's a veteran of the air. Anthony's need for speed and adrenaline led him to racing and performing aerobatics. But he calls his latest piloting adventure, his most rewarding. Flying his own biplane, he traveled across in the country for a campaign he calls, "Reach for the sky...we've got the ground"."Essentially, what that means, is for the support crew that is on the ground at each airport we visited. We delivered a COVID-19 relief package that had face masks, hand sanitizer, and then we gave them a mug to say thank you. We appreciate what you are doing."It was quite a trip for the Valley Center resident, as his flight included 44 stops in 22 locations."My sponsor, Epic Fuel,s, put together this campaign that covered six thousand nautical miles, in my biplane, traveling about 160 miles per hour, " says Anthony. His trip was about giving thanks to airport employees."We have people at the airport, like the guys who fuel the trucks, and those workers who greet people coming off private jets. There are interactions and contact with these people all the time, and we don't think about that."And along his journey, he was able to visit with young kids, and maybe inspire them to become pilots one day. "There were a few stops along the way where people got word of me stopping in. A bunch of kids came out that were S.T.E.M motivated. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Homeowners in Chula Vista's Eastlake III Community Association are fighting back against proposed parking updates for the HOA. If passed neighbors would be required to park their cars in the garage before parking in their driveway or on the street.The Board of Directors distributed proposed updates to the Community Association Handbook for a homeowner review and comment; and will vote on Tuesday, August 20.Among the proposed changes:Street parking is permitted only after all garage spaces, and driveway spaces, are utilized to its maximum designed capacityThe Association's management company is permitted to perform a garage inspection of a residence to ensure compliance with the Association's governing documentsHomeowner Jose Esquer believes an inspection would be an invasion of people's property."They seem to want the right to inspect your garage, and that's private property. What I have in my garage shouldn't be anybody's business, but whoever is inside my house. I have a problem with them trying to police what we do once inside our house," said Esquer. Becky Niemiec already parks her car in the garage but still believes the changes would be an overstep. "We don't have attics, we don't have basements, we have no storage, people should be able to use their garage however they want to," said Niemiec.Niemiec says the issue has drawn a lot of debate on Nextdoor. She says while some argue the changes could help beautify the neighborhood, she believes that group is in the minority. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – For the first time, a San Diego man is sharing his horrifying story about being an alleged so-called blind mule for a drug cartel. Team 10 Investigative Reporter Jennifer Kastner discovered that there's people who cross into San Diego from Mexico who have no idea they're smuggling drugs. “I thought I was in a nightmare. I could not believe that this was happening to me,” says the man we interviewed who tells us he was the unsuspecting victim of a drug trafficking scheme by a cartel. We’ve agreed to not use his name or show his face. “My biggest fear is that if they were watching me then, they're probably watching me now,’ he told 10News.10News was in a San Diego courtroom this January when his case was formally dismissed. Prosecutors dismissed the case, after charging him months earlier with bringing marijuana through the Otay Mesa Port of Entry. There was no explanation for the dismissal, but the man we interviewed believes it was due to a lack of evidence. To this day, he maintains his innocence. “In my wildest dreams, I would have never thought that there were five huge packages of marijuana stuck to the undercarriage of my truck,” he says. He claims he was a blind mule, a person who unknowingly moved narcotics.“I think it is without a doubt true that there are instances every year where people are coming across, bringing drugs, and they do not realize they're doing it,” says Caleb Mason, a former Assistant U.S. Attorney in San Diego. He’s studied blind mules. They're not common, but they do exist. “Five percent is approximately the rate that we saw going across districts,” Mason said.Last October, a Mexican citizen who crosses the border into San Diego for work became an unsuspecting smuggler, after five pounds of drugs were found hidden under his fender.There’s also a famous case from 2011 in which an El Paso school teacher was released from a Mexican jail, after investigators discovered she was being used as a blind drug mule. She didn't know that almost ninety pounds of pot were hidden in her trunk when she crossed the border. The man we interviewed for this story says it was last summer when he was living in Tijuana and commuting daily to San Diego for work. After getting unfortunate news that he'd been let go at his job, he says he crossed back into Mexico to have lunch with his girlfriend and parked his truck in an open, unsecured lot. He then crossed back to go fishing, but at the Port of Entry, the K-9s alerted an officer to his truck. He adds, “The first thing that he said to me is, ‘Are you under duress? Has anybody forced you to drive this vehicle?’” He says he was placed in a holding cell and then taken to jail after officers removed packages with more than forty pounds of pot from under his truck that were stuck on with magnets.“Typically, those are attached by magnets just to the undercarriage of the vehicle. sometimes we see spare tires mounted in the car in or on the car,” says Sgt. Bill Kerr with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department’s Border Crimes Suppression Team. “Your classic, true blind mule is typically a SENTRI pass holder, meaning they face less scrutiny when crossing the border,” he adds. SENTRI passes expedite the clearance process for low-risk, approved travelers in the United States. The man we interviewed did not have a SENTRI pass, but says he was easy to track and follow. “I believe that I was targeted because of my routine,” he said.The case financially drained him. He never got his truck back, and had to pay thousands of dollars in attorney's fees. “This completely turned my life upside down,” he explains. He’s hoping his story will raise awareness for travelers to always be mindful of their vehicles’ security. 3748
