"This joint effort is a great example of how our Consumer Protection Unit works to protect people from unfair business practices in the marketplace and ensure that California's consumer protection laws are followed."The judgment requires Jdate, Christian Mingle, and all of Spark's other dating sites to have full transparency with consumers about automatically renewing memberships.The company now must:-- clearly and conspicuously disclose the renewal terms;-- get consumers' consent, through a separate check box (or similar mechanism) that does not include other terms and conditions;-- send a clear summary of the renewal terms after consumers pay; and-- allow consumers to cancel easily.Spark Networks cooperated with the task force to reach the resolution.According to prosecutors, online "subscriptions" and other automatically recurring charges have proliferated in the United States in recent years. Some renewals come after "free trials," where consumers need to cancel in time to avoid the charges.Federal and state law requires businesses to make auto-renewals clear to consumers, and to get their "express, affirmative consent" before collecting any money. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Unified School District officials announced they were making preparations to get children back in schools, but were looking at a timeline of "months, not weeks," before that could become a reality.The district will adopt strict new standards to protect students, staff and the community from the spread of COVID-19 when schools convene in person again, District Superintendent Cindy Marten said during a news conference Monday. The measures are being adopted and developed in consultation with experts from UCSD.In the meantime, the district will begin classes remotely this month.Conditions for reopening local schools will be stricter than state standards, will proceed in phases and will require critical protective measures including mandatory masks, proper ventilation and strict social distancing, according to district leaders.State standards for reopening schools already require a seven-day testing positivity rate of less than 8% and other factors, but the panel convened by San Diego Unified called for adding contact tracing metrics and other factors included in the County of San Diego's designated health triggers."We consulted with the world's leading experts on all aspects of this pandemic because we wanted a comprehensive set of standards to create the safest possible environment for our students and staff," said Dr. Howard Taras, UCSD professor and consulting pediatrician for San Diego Unified. "The strength in these new standards comes precisely from this combination of factors. Taken together, they represent the strictest reasonable conditions for safety when operations eventually resume."According to Taras, San Diego Unified would not consider reopening campuses to in-person study until San Diego County reports fewer than seven community outbreaks of COVID-19 in the previous week and the illness showing up in rates fewer than 100 per 100,000 over the previous two weeks, among other metrics.Marten said the district has purchased more than million in personal protective equipment and has received some 200,000 masks in child and adult sizes from the state, along with 14,000 bottles of hand sanitizer. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Some low-level, non-violent inmates facing trials and being held in San Diego County jails are being considered for release in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, the county's district attorney and sheriff announced Saturday."In the wake of an unprecedented Superior Court closure, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office and San Diego County Sheriff's Department took several proactive steps this week to address the threat of the coronavirus to individuals arrested for low-level, non-violent crimes who normally would have been released if the court was open or can't afford to post jail," the DA and sheriff said in a joint statement.The DA's office did not say how many inmates have already been released under the new policies nor how many are expected to be released.District Attorney Summer Stephan said she and the sheriff were concerned about defendants who are not an imminent threat to pubic safety, who are unable to post bail and would be forced to wait weeks or potentially months for their first court appearance because of the court being shut down.Cases involving people in custody are being reviewed and if no charges are going to be filed, the jail will be notified by the district attorney so the person can be released, the statement said."If charges are going to be filed, the district attorney is working with the sheriff and the court on an electronic pre-arraignment review to identify individuals whose charges are eligible for immediate release or bail reduction," a news advisory said."We're taking these steps because it's the right thing to do in the face of extreme circumstances that pose a serious health risk to inmates and everyone who has contact with inmates..." SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer accepted a nine-figure loan from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Tuesday to help the city finance phase one of the Pure Water San Diego water recycling program.Faulconer joined EPA Acting Administrator Andrew Wheeler to formally claim the 4 million Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act loan. The city estimates that the first phase of the program will cost roughly .4 billion, including funding from the loan.San Diego will provide one-third of the city's drinking water through the Pure Water program by 2035, according to city officials.
