BEIJING, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Saturday sent a message of condolence to his Chilean counterpart Michelle Bachelet over the casualties and property losses caused by the powerful earthquake that struck Chile earlier in the day.Hu, on behalf of the Chinese government as well as in his own name, extended sincere condolences to Bachelet, the Chilean people and government as well as deep sympathies to the earthquake victims.Hu said China was ready to offer emergency relief assistant to Chile to help those affected by the earthquake through their difficulties.Hu said he was confident that under the leadership of the government, Chile would be able to overcome the catastrophe and reconstruct its homeland.A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake rocked southern Chile early Saturday, killing at least 122 people, and Bachelet has declared a "state of catastrophe" in the country.

BEIJING, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Some foreign diplomats and journalists based in Beijing Sunday were invited to watch Road of Rejuvenation, a music-and-dance epic highlighting China's twists and turns in the past 170 years. The gala at the National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA) was presented by more than 1,000 performers, featuring China's modern and contemporary history with chorus, dances, and stage screens.Iwona Rogacka-Hu, an officer with the Embassy of the Republic of Poland, said every step of the country's progress was presented clearly in the epic gala and she was moved by the themes of the mother and motherland.Peter A. Fischer, a Swiss correspondent with Zurich Times (NZZ) Beijing Office, said he saw many battles and difficult times in China's modern history through the show."I hope these will never come again, and China will grow more prosperous and open further up," Fischer said. The gala was produced to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China in October 2009. It debuted in Beijing on Sept. 20 last year.Zhang Jigang, director of the show, said so far 40 performances had been staged at the NCPA, and there are 40 more to go."The tickets for the upcoming shows have been sold out," said Wang Zhengming, vice president of the NCPA.Zhang said the gala had been filmed and would be available in cinemas soon.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, in a recent bold speech here, criticized China's policies on Internet administration and insinuated that China restricts Internet freedom.Clinton's statement, which were inconsistent with the facts, is clearly yet another example of the double standards that the United States applies. As is widely recognized, freedom is always relative, and such is also the case with Internet freedom. Through years of development, the Internet has been closely connected with people, bringing both convenience and threats. The threats include Internet-based crimes and pornography. It is common practice for countries, including the United States, to take necessary measures to administer the Internet according to their own laws and regulations. The Internet is also restricted in the United States when it comes to information concerning terrorism, porn, racial discrimination and other threats to society.Shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the U.S. Congress approved the Patriot Act to grant its security agencies the right to search telephone and e-mail communications in the name of anti-terrorism. The move aroused a great deal of controversy far and wide.U.S. authorities have also taken measures, such as installing supervision software and imposing grave punishments, to curb Internet child porn, a serious crime in the country. The United States often gossips about other countries' policies on administering the Internet, but at the same time it takes similar measures to minimize the spread of illegal information. That shows that the United States takes a strict line with other countries, but not with itself.Clinton in her speech also talked of Google's threat to quit China due to what the company said were "cyber attacks of varying degrees on a regular basis."As a matter of fact, the U.S. was the first country to introduce the concept of cyber warfare and then put it into practice. The country also developed a new type of troops -- cyber troops. The Pentagon has adopted several measures to beef up the military's cyber warfare capacity, according to American media reports last year. In June, Defense Secretary Robert Gates issued an order to establish a new military cyber command dedicated to coordinating the Pentagon's efforts to defend its networks and conduct cyber warfare. The command was expected to be fully operational by October this year. So, it is quite hypocritical to point one's finger at others without proper justification while managing to strengthen one's own cyber warfare capacity.Necessary regulation of the Internet is a consensus of the entire international community for the sake of healthy development of the Internet. No responsible country takes a laissez-faire attitude towards the use of the Internet. It is an operational norm observable by all foreign-funded enterprises to respect and comply with laws and regulations as well as public interests and the cultural tradition of the host country.Noting that most countries exert some sort of control over information,Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said Friday his company must comply with the laws and customs of any country where it does business. The U.S. move to make Internet freedom an issue just indicates its continued application of double standards. People just wish that the United States will respect facts and treat others equally. It is not acceptable for someone to assume for themselves the high moral ground and arbitrarily make baseless charges against others.

BEIJING, March 18 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman Thursday said the U.S.- China relationship is mature and stable enough to weather differences between the two countries.Huntsman made the remarks in his speech, "2010: The Year of Decision," at the prestigious Tsinghua University in Beijing. The ambassador thought 2010 would be "the most important year in the history of the Sino-U.S. relations," as the two sides had to take action and make real progress on pressing global challenges like economic recovery and climate change. The China-U.S relationship had a good start after President Obama took office last year. However, U.S arms sales to Taiwan and U.S leaders' meetings with the ** Lama posed problems."I've seen enough ups and downs to know that the recent turbulence we've experienced is part of a natural cycle. Our relationship is mature and stable enough to weather our differences," said Huntsman in his half-hour speech.Huntsman said he was confident the two countries would work through their differences through dialogue, and they would be able to get on with the global challenges."Together we can lay the foundation for another 30 years of economic growth and stability in our countries, and in the world," he said."I am convinced that blue skies are already on the horizon," he said.He expected the bilateral relationship would regain the "high cruising altitude" of last year by the opening of the Shanghai World Expo in May.He was also confident the two sides would make real progress on the global challenges when they met for the second round of the U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue (SED) and when Chinese President Hu Jintao visited the United States this year.

BEIJING, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan will pay a three-day visit to the United States from March 24 to strengthen economic and trade cooperation, said a statement posted on the official website of the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) Friday. The visit was aimed at expanding bilateral trade and promoting the healthy and stable development of the Sino-U.S. economic and trade relations, the statement said.Zhong would also negotiate with the U.S. administration over Sino-U.S. trade issues in an effort to increase mutual understanding, and defuse trade frictions, the statement said."Sino-U.S. economic and trade relations are mutually beneficial," said He Ning, director general of the Department of American and Oceanian Affairs of the MOC."China believes any economic and trade issues, including the RMB (Chinese currency) exchange rate, can be resolved through dialogue."But we should avoid politicizing economic and trade issues," He told journalists Friday in Beijing. He said commodities trade figures only mirrored flows of the products, but it could not truly reveal the beneficiaries.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said earlier this month that half of China's exports came from the processing trade, in which imported components were assembled at factories in China and 60 percent were made by foreign-funded companies or joint ventures with foreign partners.MOC spokesman Yao Jian said Tuesday China welcomed more U.S. high-tech exports, and was willing to promote more balanced Sino-U.S. trade.
