SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Border officials say they have received enough funding to replace 100 miles of border fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border.The Trump Administration will put forth about .6 billion through the 2018 Congressional appropriations.  The new border wall provides a comprehensive system of wall, lighting, and technologies, Acting Commissioner Ronald Vitiello said during a press conference Friday.In San Diego, a total of 28 miles of border barrier will be replaced. Fourteen miles of "dilapidated" border wall constructed with landing mats will be replaced with new steel bollard wall, according to Vitiello. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Celebrity Chef Brian Malarkey announced Sunday the closure of his San Diego restaurants amid the coronavirus outbreak. The announcement was made on Instagram and the closures take effect Sunday, March 15. “On behalf of our staff and community and in the interest of keeping our city safe, we are temporarily suspending our operations,” Malarkey said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — By Saturday, many businesses will be shutting their doors all over again as San Diego County deals with a new round of restrictions in the purple tier."The overwhelming majority of folks who are doing it right are forced to be punished because of the individuals who choose not to," said Nathan Fletcher, San Diego County Supervisor. "Where we are now in a situation where we're faced with all bad options."The county's public health officer, Dr. Wilma Wooten, recently requested the state reconsider San Diego County's tier placement and keep the county in the red tier. She argued that data from October revealed the county's increased COVID-19 cases are not because of the sectors that would be impacted the most by moving into the purple tier. The request was not approved."We're going to continue to work to do everything we can with the state to have an approach that's right," said Fletcher.He said it's essential that every jurisdiction across the county does what it can to reduce the spread of COVID-19."We have to come together," he said. "There are limits of what the county can do when it comes to enforcement; we really need the help of the law enforcement agencies."But some say this has gone too far. Many business owners are now choosing to defy the orders and stay open to ensure their business survives, and employees still have a job.El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells said he has taken many calls and emails about the struggles business owners face in his jurisdiction.Some say defying the orders and keeping their doors open means keeping food on their family's table. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — COVID-19 related hospitalizations are on the rise in San Diego County and some healthcare workers are worried we will continue to see a significant increase over the next several weeks to months.“We’re actually seeing significant increases,” said Dr. Ghazala Sharieff, Scripps Health Chief Medical Officer for Clinical Excellence and Experience. “We’re actually higher than we were back in July. Yesterday alone the numbers we got from the county we had 532 hospitalizations across the region.”The total number of positive COVID-19 cases in the county is now 75,305. According to county data, 4,470 of all COVID-19 cases have required hospitalization, and 1,006 had to be admitted to an intensive care unit.Sharieff said Wednesday at Scripps campuses, more than 100 people were hospitalized with COVID-19.“We had 117 cases that is with 16 discharges, so if we weren’t able to send home those patients yesterday, we would be at our peak level in July,” she said.She said the concern is growing from those in the medical field, not only after local Halloween parties locally, but as we enter Thanksgiving and the next several holidays.She expects the numbers to continue climbing into early 2021.“What we’re seeing now is what we have predicted,” she said. “We do worry that two or three weeks out from now that we’re going to see the number increase as well.New Year’s Eve is December 31st; if you calculate just exactly what we’re seeing now, people start getting sick in that first two weeks, because the incubation period is two to fourteen days after exposure, then they get really sick and hospitalized, and then the intensive care unit comes, so I’m very worried.”Like many healthcare systems, she says Scripps is seeing a surge in hospitalizations countywide, but even more in the South Bay, where Covid-19 has hit the community hard.Scripps has a detailed plan in place and has managed to balance hospital capacity by transferring patients to different hospitals to not overwhelm a specific location.“Every day, between 4 to 5 patients are getting transferred out of the Chula Vista campus,” she said. “Yesterday we had five transfers, this morning we had two from Chula Vista to Green, and two from Mercy Chula Vista to La Jolla. We don’t want all of the strain to go on our staff in one place when we have capability elsewhere.”“It’s really hard on the healthcare providers when we’re out there trying to save lives, and we see people taking risks like they don’t have to take right now,” she said. “It’s a punch in the gut every time.”Sharieff said the hospitals are well equipped with PPE this time around, but while many people may be letting their guards down and gathering this Thanksgiving, she’s reminding everyone that this pandemic isn’t over and will get worse if we don’t act now.“Just one thing that you do can impact so many lives afterward,” she said. 2901

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Beaches in San Diego are expected to be packed for the Fourth of July weekend as other nearby counties shut down their beaches over coronavirus concerns.Local law enforcement agencies are prepared for the influx in beachgoers, but many are hoping and wondering if people will follow San Diego County’s facial covering and social distancing requirements.On Friday, ABC 10News crews observed visitors at Mission Beach keeping their distance from each other and most of them wearing facial coverings.Many visitors came to the beach early to secure spots for what will likely be a busy weekend.The Cotus family, visiting San Diego from Arizona, heard about Gov. Gavin Newsom closing beaches where coronavirus numbers are rising. But the family took the chance that San Diego beaches would stay open.“We figured this morning we got the kids up. OK, let’s take a chance; either we can get to the beach or we can’t. If not, there’s a pool at the hotel,” Edward Cotus said.Law enforcement agencies said they will be out this weekend reminding people about the rules. However, they say it will be up to the public to follow them.The Cotus family said they understand why people don’t like wearing the face coverings, but they believe it’s everyone’s responsibility to do their part in controlling the spread of this virus.“We all have to be responsible and just try to really implement social distancing on our own.
