Companies are using some pretty sneaky tactics to make you think you're getting more than you actually are when it comes to buying things like cosmetics. But are they breaking rules?U.S. consumers spent billion in 2017 on cosmetic products.  Makeup enthusiast Alex Langer says she’s never really paid close attention to the amount of product inside the fancy cosmetic bottles."Unless you're a mathematician, you don't know what that really is," says Langer. The NOW’s investigative team looked at some popular brands and found some tricky packaging that seems misleading. (Disclaimer: we are not mathematicians)"I think that there is an ethical issue with trying to convey that there is more in that package than there really is," says marketing expert Darrin Duber-Smith.The NOW looked at two different oils from Olay products. One actually had more product than the other. The company is using what marketers refer to as "downsizing," which started a decade ago."You can make your package thicker, and that way it holds less stuff,” explains Duber-Smith. “You can put a false bottom or a thicker bottom at the bottom…you can fill it, not all the way to the top."Another product from e.l.f. looked as if it was full of product, but when you start unscrewing things and pulling if apart, you learn quickly that looks are very deceiving."Competitors have to kind of have larger packages in order to convey the perception that there's more and more product in there," explains Duber-Smith.Companies, however, cannot lie about the amount on the product’s label. The companies are required to be precise about what’s included on labels and the product amount is included."We have labeling requirements,” explains Duber-Smith. “We have regulatory agencies that do oversee these things."Packaging can change your perception dramatically. Each bottle of foundation we looked at differed in design, but the amount in the bottles were the same."I would agree completely that it's very misleading to consumers,” Duber-Smith says. “And my feeling is that if your intent is to deceive you have an ethical issue."So before you purchase your next beauty product, pay attention and make sure you are checking the labels; don't be deceived by pretty packaging. 2264

Climate studies often pinpoint the detrimental public health impacts related to rising atmospheric temperatures, extreme weather events and other consequences of a changing climate.A report released by the World Health Organization on Wednesday details the public health benefits that could come with tackling the issue.Meeting the commitments of the 2015 Paris climate agreement could save millions of lives and hundreds of billions of dollars by the middle of the century, according to the report.Meeting the goals put forth in the Paris agreement would be expected to save more than 1 million lives a year from air pollution alone by 2050, it says. Drivers of climate change, principally fossil fuel combustion, contribute to about 7 million deaths worldwide from outdoor and indoor air pollution annually, according to the report. The Paris Agreement is a pledge among representatives from countries around the world to take action against climate change, specifically by reducing their nations' carbon output and halting global warming below 2 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial levels by the end of the century. The United States pledged to withdraw from the landmark agreement last year.Global leaders and officials are now gathering for two weeks of meetings at the 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, or COP24, to create a rulebook that will turn the Paris climate agreement into a workable reality. They aim to establish rules, figure out financing and build ways to verify that nations are meeting their commitments.UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for action Monday in Poland, telling gathered delegates that "we are in deep trouble with climate change." 1743

Cyberbullying among kids related to the election is a growing problem right now. And with how divisive things are, there are concerns this won't be going away after the polls close next week.“This is a very, very polarizing and almost even more in front of kids’ faces, election than any other time in history,” said Titania Jordan with Bark Technologies.Bark Technologies currently monitors more than 5 million kids online at home. Its monitoring shows from mid-August to the end of September, there was a 25% increase in bullying overall from the beginning of July. And there was a 220% increase in severe bullying. You'd expect to see this with the start of the school year, but the numbers show this is about a 50% increase from what Bark typically sees over this period. They say the feedback they've received from parents supports the increase with a direct tie-in to election-related cyberbullying.“It’s not something that she gets to judge over or bully over or make people feel bad about,” said Kathryn Noble, whose daughter was impacted by cyberbullying. “That's not acceptable at any age but especially at 13.”Noble says her 13-year-old daughter recently blocked one of her friends on social media over them supporting a different candidate than her.Bark found around 45% of what kids are sharing is memes about the two candidates. They've found this month that messages including the word “Trump” are being flagged more frequently for depression, hate speech and weapons.Messages including the word "Biden" are being flagged more frequently for cyberbullying, because they include disparaging or belittling language.“They're being bullied even because of maybe something their parents have said or something their family says,” said Matt McKee at Bark Technologies. “Hey, this is where we stand right now and because of that, kids are being brought into those situations.”As far as addressing this cyberbullying, the tech experts we talked with say asking your kids to teach you about a certain app they are using will give you more insight into what's happening earlier.Things to watch for include changes in sleep patterns or behavior. They also say now is really the time to encourage empathy with your kids. 2229
