XIAMEN, July 23 (Xinhua) -- A rescue and breeding base for endangered Chinese white dolphins started a trial operational period on Saturday in the southeastern seaside resort of Xiamen. The base is the first of its kind in the country. The base, located on the city's Huoshaoyu Islet, includes a rescue center and a breeding area and can accommodate up to four to six white dolphins, said Pan Shijian, vice mayor of Xiamen.Previously, rescuers had to return injured white dolphins back to the sea after giving them simple medical treatment due to the lack of a rescue base, Pan said."From now on, the base will be a hospital for injured or stranded dolphins," he said. The base will also be used as a rehabilitation center for children with infantile autism and brain paralysis, with the dolphins acting as "doctors" during the children's recovery period, he added. The Chinese white dolphin mainly lives in the seas around Xiamen and the Pearl River estuary in south China. The dolphins are under first-class state protection. The Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences estimates that about 2,000 of the dolphins are living in China's seas.
VIENNA, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Austrian researchers have developed a method of using fungi and produced enzymes to split Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) material into their initial state, enabling the recovery of all individual components, said the Austrian Center of Industrial Biotechnology (ACIB) Thursday in a press release.Enzyme is a special protein that acts as biological catalyst, for example, bacteria and fungi in the nature can break down long chain molecules.Researchers from the Technical University of Graz, the Technical University of Vienna and the Agricultural University of Vienna jointly found that efficient enzymes are capable to break and split PET into small fragments. With different methods, the researchers forced the fungi to overproduce their precious "split-tools" after they are modified and improved by genetic engineering.Through the new method developed by the ACIB, it is now possible to decompose the PET polymer to its initial monomers with high product quality and from this to produce new high-quality materials again. This circuit avoids waste and thus saves resources and is friendly to the environment, said Geog Guebitz, head of the Research Department on Enzymes and Polymers in the ACIB.He further explained that the ACIB has established a partnership with some industrial enterprises to carry out application experiments. From the current splitting time of 24 hours, the researchers expect to shorten the whole process to "a few hours," he added.PET is a common plastic material in the polyester family, widely used in the textile industry. PET film is mainly used in electrical insulation materials, which can be also used for production of film, X-ray films and computer taps, even to produce plastic bottle and other blow molding products.
KATHMANDU, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Ban on smoking in public places will be enforced from Sunday with the Tobacco Control and Regulatory Act-2010 coming into effect. Those smoking in public places will be fined and civil servants will be liable to departmental action.Government offices, corporations, educational institutions, libraries, airports, public vehicles, orphanages, childcare centres, cinema halls, homes for the elderly, cultural centres, children's gardens, hotels, restaurants, resorts, girls' and boys' hostels, department stores, religious sites and industries have been designated no-smoking zones.Health Secretary Sudha Sharma said mass awareness campaign highlighting punishment will be carried out. She also said an inter-ministerial coordinating committee has been formed to enforce the law to ensure people's right to health. Pasting no- smoking notices at every public place will be mandatory.According to The Himalayan Times daily, the ban covers sale of tobacco products and single sticks within a 100-meter radius of educational and health institutions, children's homes, child care centers and home for elders.Anyone selling tobacco products to persons under the age of 18 years and pregnant women will be fined. The Act also prohibits advertising and sponsoring programs in the name of tobacco-related products through media. Offenders will be fined. The government's mass awareness campaign will cover the entire country to ensure effective implementation of the Act.
TAIYUAN, June 18 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese medical university will join hands with the Massey University of New Zealand to set up a community clinic specializing in chronic diseases in north China's Shanxi Province. The community clinic in Taiyuan, the provincial capital city, will provide medical services to more than 7,500 residents in the city's Hanxiguandong community, Ma Qianjin, vice president of the Shanxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, said on Friday.Residents will be able to seek advice from both Chinese and New Zealand experts on how to prevent chronic diseases like diabetes, said Ma.The clinic, which is expected to open this year, will also provide residents with free health check-ups and create health records for them.Bruce Ullrich, a Massey University board member, said on Friday that the clinic will integrate Western service with traditional Chinese medical techniques in its prevention and treatment of chronic diseases."The community clinic will mainly focus on people with obesity, diabetes and other chronic diseases. The cost of disease prevention will be dramatically lower than the cost of treatment," said Ullrich.Zhang Xinwei, deputy director of the provincial science and technology bureau, said that if the clinic's practices are successful, the model may be adopted by other regions in China.
