SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Seven families are suing the company that runs the San Diego County Fair after they say members of their family contracted E. coli traced to the fair's livestock last summer. The lawsuit alleges the 22nd District Agricultural Association, which runs the annual fair and the fairgrounds, was negligent in its handling of the petting zoo area, failed to safely guard guests and warn of risks, properly inspect and clean, and screen animals at 2019's fair."People were getting sick all the way from June 8th to June 22nd, at least," said attorney Ben Coughlan, who is representing the plaintiffs. "That demonstrates a real failure by the fair to clean and properly protect the people they were inviting on, they were selling tickets to from this deadly disease."RELATED COVERAGE: Families file claims for fatal E. coli outbreak at San Diego County FairAs of July 2019, there were 11 laboratory-confirmed cases and two probable cases of patrons who visited the San Diego County Fair in June 2019 and contracted shiga toxin-producing strain of E. coli O157:H7 (STEC) thereafter, the suit states. The County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency traced the outbreak to children that had visited the animal areas or the petting zoo at the fair, or had other animal contact at the fair, county health officials reported. Officials added that the illnesses had no link to any food facilities the children accessed. The family of 2-year-old Jedidiah King Cabezuela, from National City, is also represented in the suit. The toddler died 10 days after visiting the fair's petting zoo, suffering from kidney failure and other complications from STEC.RELATED COVERAGE: E. Coli outbreak linked to San Diego County Fair reaches 11 casesCoughlan says the family is still reeling from the loss and wants to see action taken."Of course, they are still struggling, they are dealing with an incomprehensible loss," Coughlan said. "For any of us who have children, it’s just something that’s unimaginable. The strength that family has, the strength to step up and say what happened last year was wrong, we want it fixed and we want it better in the future is remarkable."In the lawsuit, the 22nd DAA is accused of also failing to provide adequate hand-washing stations and immediately remove or quarantine animals suspected of transmitting E. coli to guests.RELATED COVERAGE: CDC: How to protect yourself around fair animals 2435

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - SeaWorld is seeing an unusually large number of sea lion rescues along the local coastline this winter."Most of those rescued are coming in emaciated and dehydrated," said Jennifer Zarate, SeaWorld Senior Animal Care Specialist.Zarate says since early December, SeaWorld has rescued 25 sea lions along the coastline."Definitely a little concerning," said Zarate. That is about three times the amount they normally see. Usually, rescue season begins in March, so these rescues are coming early. Those needing rescuing this winter are younger than normal, less than two years old. The cause is a mystery, but Zarate says those early winter storms could be playing a role. The big swells may be tiring the pups out, causing them to burn too many calories. The weather may also be impacting their food sources.."The winter storms may be pushing schools of fish out further than seal lion pups can get to. That's probably the reason why they might not find as much fish as they normally would," said Zarate. After being rescued by SeaWorld, the pups now doing well. So far, medical tests haven't turned up anything else unusual. The pups are gaining back weight as expected. Next week, the first three of those recently rescued will be released.SeaWorld says the coastline in Orange County has also seen an increase in sea lion rescues. SeaWorld says it will be prepared for a big rescue season if needed. If you see an animal in need of rescue, SeaWorld says keep your distance and call their rescue hotline at 1-800-541-SEAL. 1547

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Several residents have reported receiving calls from San Diego Superior Court demanding money for pending court cases or face arrest. The scam has been reported by several members of the county Hispanic community, according to court officials. The caller says the potential victim has a pending case and that they must deposit money into a bank account or an arrest warrant will be issued.Scammers are using software to mask their number, so the ongoing calls will display the official court phone number in Caller ID."The Court would like to remind the public that it will not demand money over to phone to clear up cases or dismiss any warrants. When in doubt, immediately hang up and call the Court on your own," a release from San Diego Superior Court said.Law enforcement officials also recommend hanging up and calling authorities if scammers become aggressive over the phone. 908
