HOTAN, Xinjiang, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Government and Communist Party departments at all levels in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region should rely on the people of all ethnic groups to build a "steel wall" for the region's stability to safeguard the interests of the people, senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang said here Saturday.     Zhou, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks on the third day of his visit to Xinjiang. "They are attempting to stage more sabotage," he said. CAIRO, June 21 (Xinhua) -- China's new special envoy on the Middle East issue Wu Sike said here on Sunday that China is willing to push forward the peace process with all the parties concerned under new circumstances in the region. MILAN, Italy, May 19 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo said here on Tuesday that China and Italy should explore new areas of cooperation as they face major opportunities in addressing the grim challenges of the international financial crisis.     Wu is the first chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) who has visited Italy since 1997.He arrived in Milan on Monday evening for an official goodwill visit. Wu met with Roberto Formiconi, president of Lombard Region of Italy on Tuesday.     During the meeting, Wu said as one of the most economically vigorous regions in Italy, the Lombard Region is leading the country in carrying out cooperation with China. It has signed a memorandum of cooperation with Shanghai on staging the World Expo.     Wu hopes that the two sides could utilize this platform to expand exchanges and cooperation so as to add new vigor to China-Italy relations.     Formiconi expressed the willingness to actively participate in the Shanghai World Expo, which he regards as an important area of cooperation between the two sides. UNITED NATIONS, June 15 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday called for the peaceful resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue through diplomatic negotiations.     La Yifan, minister-counselor of China's Permanent Mission to the UN, told a Security Council meeting that China has always called for resolving the Iranian nuclear issue through diplomatic negotiations in a peaceful manner.     "China always believes that resolving this issue through diplomatic means is in the interest of peace and security in the Middle East and is in the common interest of the international community," he said.     La said China is ready to continue to play a constructive role in this regard.     At present, "rare opportunities" exist with regard to the restart of the negotiations with Iran over the nuclear issue, he said.     La called on Iran to strengthen its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to resolve outstanding issues as early as possible.     He also urged the international community to seize the opportunity to intensify diplomatic efforts so as to ensure an early start of the negotiations.

DAMASCUS, April 26 (Xinhua) -- During his Middle East tour, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Sunday put out a five-point proposal to push forward the Middle East peace process and common development.     Yang, who has visited Egypt, the Palestinian territories, Israel and Syria, said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua that China has been closely following the situation in the Middle East and he has made in-depth exchanges of views with concerned parties on various issues of the region during his Middle East visit. The Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip at the end of 2008 has brought heavy casualties and instability to the region, which shows once again that if the Middle East issue is not been fundamentally solved, there will be no peace and security in this region, he said.     Currently, Israel has formed a new government and the two main Palestinian factions have been holding talks under the mediation of Egypt. Under such circumstances, Yang put the five-point proposal, which includes:     First, the concerned parties should adhere to the peace talks, and firmly promote the peace process on the basis of relevant UN resolutions, the "land for peace" principle, the "Road Map" plan, and the Arab peace initiative, Yang said.     Second, the parties should take positive measures to restore stability and accumulate mutual trust, so as to create conditions for the development of peace process.     Third, China believes the two-state solution should be maintained and calls for an early establishment of an independent Palestinian state and the two countries of Palestine and Israeli live in harmony.     "This is the ultimate way out for the Palestinian issue, which can give guarantee to the Middle East peace and security," Yang said.     Fourth, the international community should continue to pay due attention to the Middle East issue, and deliver its supports to the peace talks, the inner-Palestinian unity and economic growth.     Fifth, the peace negotiations between Palestine and Israel, Syria and Israel, Lebanon and Israel should advance in a coordinated way in order to achieve comprehensive peace across the Middle East region, Yang said.     "As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China will continue to maintain close communication and coordination with parties concerned to play a constructive role in pushing for a comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the Middle East issue," Yang added.     He said he has enunciated China's position on current Middle East issues during the trip. He hoped relevant parties could stick to the peaceful negotiation and accumulate mutual trust in a bid to advance the Middle East peace process.     He said he believes his visits to the four Middle East nations will contribute to the peace process.     Yang left the Syrian capital Damascus on Sunday after meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Mualem.
