SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In-person voting kicked off in San Diego County on Saturday, welcoming voters to the polls early through Election Day.The polling locations will be open through Monday, Nov. 2, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and reopen on Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. There are 235 super poll locations in San Diego County for in-person voting.Margie Singley is one resident who chose to vote in person on the first day. She said it was fast and easy.“I thought maybe it might be crowded so if it was busy today I might come tomorrow or Monday to avoid the crowds,” said Singley. She said that she felt an added level of security by voting in person and did not have any concerns about coronavirus because necessary steps were taken inside the polling place. “Not at all, so no fear. Come on in!” she said.Liza and Joe Kennedy turned in their filled-out ballots to a drop off location on the same day. They said it was their first time filling out their ballots from home, and they appreciated being able to take their time in the comfort of their own home.“It’s a safety reason too, you’re not sharing pens, you’re not in the same little fold up booth. You can do it in the security of your own home,” the couple said.Mary Criscenti and Allyson Brenner are the poll workers who collected the Kennedy’s ballots. The duo cheered on voters as they dropped off their ballots, saying everyone who stopped by had high energy all morning.“Everyone is happy. Everyone is filled with hope,” they said. All mailed ballots have to be postmarked by Tuesday, Nov. 3. Polls close for in-person voting at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3.As of Sunday, more than 28,100 voters had already cast their votes in early voting at polling locations. Another 10,091 voters had already voted at the Registrar of Voters since Oct. 5.As of Friday evening, more than one million of the registered 1.9 million San Diego County voters had already cast their ballots. At the same time in the 2016 election, around 442,000 early votes were received. 2011

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In 2014, the Whittingtons shared their story about their first-born child in a video that went viral.Ryland was born a girl. “As soon as Ryland could speak, she would scream, ‘I am a boy!’” the video explained. As Ryland got older, the feelings got stronger. After consulting professionals and experts, parents Jeff and Hillary Whittington came to the conclusion Ryland was transgender. For their child’s well-being, they decided to allow him to transition as soon as possible.Today, the YouTube video about Ryland's journey has more than 8 million views. In a 2016 interview with 10News, Jeff Whittington explained some of the criticism his family received. “They think that this is something that just happened overnight. We just made this split-second decision and our son said, ‘I feel like a boy.’ And we said great. And that wasn’t the case,” he said.Hillary Whittington wrote a book about their journey, Raising Ryland."I think people are definitely opening their minds a lot more,” Hillary Whittington said, as she reflected on their family’s journey over the past several years.Jeff explained how they try to deal with those who do not agree with their family’s decision. “We recognize that a lot of that comes from background, stories, and experiences they’ve had. We tend to take that negativity and try and understand what the source of that may be and try and find empathy for those that are critical,” he said.Ryland, now 12-years-old, said he is comfortable with his story being so public. “I know it helps a lot of people,” he said.Last year, his family hosted a “coming out party” to share with loved ones. Ryland gave a speech in front of his friends and others close to him. “It’s not a secret, but for many years I’ve kept it private because I was afraid you might treat me differently or not look at me the same if you knew,” he said. “When I was born, the doctors told me that I was a girl. But they were wrong. In my head and in my heart, I’ve always been a boy.”Ryland is about to enter seventh grade. He loves math and sports—his favorites are ice hockey and lacrosse. He shared what Pride month means to him. “Pride month is just a month of showing who you are and showing that you support who people want to be,” Ryland said.“We’re grateful for who our kids are. They’ve taught us so much about life and I wouldn’t a thing about them,” Hillary said. For those who still have negative things to say about their family, Ryland’s 8-year-old sister shared her thoughts. “I would want to say to them that I don’t care what they think and that I am happy to be who I am and who my family is,” Bryn said.“She took the words right out of my mouth!” Ryland echoed. 2706

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's already been one year since the San Diego Zoo Safari Park saw the first southern white rhino born through artificial insemination arrive at its park.Edward turned one-year-old on July 28, celebrating with a party at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center with his mother Victoria, 8-month-old female calf Future, and her mother Amani."Even though he doesn’t know it’s his birthday, it is very special to see Edward – a healthy, robust rhino - running around, enjoying his special treats," said Barbara Durrant, director of Reproductive Sciences at San Diego Zoo Global. "We aren’t just celebrating his birthday but also are celebrating the significance of his birth."Edward was born last year after hormone-induced ovulation and artificial insemination with frozen semen from southern white rhino Maoto on March 22, 2018. Victoria gave birth 16 months later. Edward's birth was the zoo's first successful attempt to birth a southern white rhino via artificial insemination and a critical step toward recovering its distant cousin, the northern white rhino. Currently, only two northern white rhinos exist in the world and both are female.Researchers believe that a northern white rhino calf could be born from artificial insemination within 10 to 20 years. 1313

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It is Tax Day, and if you’re like most Californians, you’re probably wondering what happened to the nice refund you’re used to getting. Or worse, you owe the government this year. So how do you Make it in San Diego on Tax Day? We found an expert who can help. It's the worst sticker shock imaginable. You're used to a little something back from the government every year in the form of a refund, but suddenly you find yourself with a hefty bill. And the feds don't look kindly on late payments."I always tell people: if you owe money, the first step is don't panic," says Ariel Jurow-Kleiman an Assistant Professor of Law at the University of San Diego. Jurow-Kleiman should know. She's helped people in this situation many times before as a tax attorney and now teaches tax law at USD. Here's the problem."The Federal tax laws were changed in a way that will dramatically affect California residents," explains Professor Kleiman. And that's probably what hit you, too. Many itemized deductions you used to get were either tossed out or capped. "It used to be you could deduct all of your state income taxes," adds Jurow-Kleiman.Now those California income taxes are capped at ,000. And your house, the interest on the mortgage was capped too - double whammy. So, if you owe, here's the first step: do not put off filing. "Absolutely, it is so important to file your taxes on time even if you think you're going to owe," says Professor Kleiman, emphasizing the point. There are penalties for filing late: 5% of your tax liability and up to a maximum of 25%. So, let's say you owe 00 and didn't file for a month, that alone will cost you at least an extra . So, file right away, and pay what you can now."There is interest, it fluctuates, right now it's 6%. It compounds daily so every day, every week that you owe there is a little bit more interest that's added on," warns Jurow-Kleiman.That compound interest can accrue quickly but Professor Kleiman says there are options. You could file for an extension and pay the full amount later. Or you could work out an installment agreement but know some fees could be tacked on. In some cases, paying off your taxes with a credit card could be cheaper than the interest from the government."If you're considering owing money to the government versus owing money to a private lender,” adds Professor Kleiman, “It's very often better to borrow money from a private lender and pay your taxes."However, Professor Kleiman adds that’s not always the case. She advises avoiding payday lenders or someone who charges very high-interest rates. And there is help, especially for those with low incomes, the elderly and the disabled. We have provided links to the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program and the local Taxpayer Advocate. For local low income clinics you can call the University of San Diego LITC at (619) 260-7470 or Legal Aid Society of San Diego LITC at (877) 534-2524.Finally, make sure you don’t fall into this situation again next year by checking that you have the proper withholding in your paycheck. You can discuss that with your Human Resources representative at work or a tax expert. 3181

esslie Severns first attended in 2017, when she had just gotten out of the military.Severns said when she walked into the room that day, she began to cry. “This makes you feel so good, that people care about you, that they go this far to donate all their clothes, and it just makes you feel empowered and ready to go back out and face this new life that you’re about to experience,” she said.Operation Dress Code also offers free make-up lessons, professional headshots and career workshops.San Diego's Courage to Call, CalVet and dozens of local businesses and organizations work together to host the annual event. 1107
