SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As we cast our ballots in this year's election, it's a good time to reflect on how our freedom to vote came at a cost. A member of the Greatest Generation looks back at how he and his fellow service members risked their lives to preserve that freedom and how his love for America began about 90 years ago.It started in North Carolina in the 1930s during the Great Depression. Forrest "Huff" Huffstetler, 96, says, "I remember how people suffered back then and I remember people lining up to get a bowl of soup."Despite the hardship, he remembers his life growing up on a farm fondly."We had our own pigs, fresh vegetables and we had cans. My mother and my grandmother would can all the food for us for the winter. We had it pretty good."It's that optimism that motivated Huff to make a decision that would change his life."I was delivering newspapers at 4 o'clock in the morning and that's when the post office had out a picture of Uncle Sam pointing a finger at you."The poster he saw encouraged people to enlist. He says his instant reaction was, "Man this is a good deal, I'd like to get in the Army."He was 15 and a half years old. He managed to enlist by convincing the notary public, who was also his aunt, that he was 18. He says it was well worth it. "I loved the Army. We had three meals a day, I had all my clothes given to me and I wanted nothing. It was wonderful."For more a month, Huff signed on to become a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division. After two tours of duty came D-Day and that defining moment, the jump over Normandy. He remembers seeing the tens of thousands of service members around him."There were paratroopers everywhere and ships out in the channel, there in the channel as far as you could see."The first town Huff helped liberate was Sainte-Mere-Eglise, which explains the hero's welcome back he received last year on the 75th anniversary of D-Day. He looks back at the unity in their fight for freedom back then and says it makes him sad to see people divided today."It breaks my heart. All these men died fighting for this country," he says, "Freedom doesn't come for free, there's nothing for free."That's why Huff votes."I remember the first time I ever voted was when I came out of the service. I was 21 years old, and it was an honor for me to go vote," he says.He wants everyone to exercise that freedom and says he also thinks things will get better. "Things are going to change. We're going to get our country back together working together." After his service, Huff worked in the restaurant industry including owning a restaurant for 20 years. He eventually made a home in San Marcos. In December, Huff will turn 97 years old. 2717

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans is warning drivers about a series of SR-163 closures throughout the week. According to the agency, all lanes of north and southbound SR-163 between I-8 and Genesee Avenue for three to six nights. The highway will be closed so crews can remove falsework from the bridge on the SR-163 Friars Road overcrossing. The southbound closures will begin at 11 p.m. with the northbound closures starting at 11:30 p.m. All lanes will reopen at 5 a.m. The list below shows which lanes will be closed on certain nights: Sunday: All southbound lanes, the northbound far right collector lane and the right main lane (slow lane).Monday: No full freeway closure. Only the northbound and southbound right main lanes.Tuesday: All southbound lanes, and the northbound left lane (fast lane).Wednesday: All northbound lanes, and the southbound left lane.Thursday: No full freeway closures. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans is warning drivers about a series of overnight closures along Interstate 5 over the next two weeks.From Sunday, November 4 through Thursday, November 8, northbound I-5 will be closed between La Jolla Village Drive and Genesee Avenue between 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.Northbound I-5 will also be closed from Tuesday, November 13 through Thursday, November 15 in the same area from 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.CHECK TRAFFIC The agency is encouraging motorists to take an alternate route to avoid possible congestion.The section of the interstate will be closed so crews can remove the temporary wooden structures from the new Gilman Drive Bridge over I-5. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Car owners at a senior community in University City woke up to a messy surprise Tuesday morning. Louise, who asked 10news not to identity her, went to her SUV which was parked on Kantor Street, and her heart sank."I walked to my car and saw that the window had been burst.  It was terrifying," said Louise.Glass was everywhere and inside her vehicle was another mess.  Her glove compartment had been tossed, her insurance and registration scattered.  Nothing was missing, but Louise is nervous."Very afraid of the personal information now they know what address I'm actually at," said Louise.It appears someone took a bat or something like that to bash the window, before unlocking their passenger door.  Louise is not the only victim.  Nearby there were more vehicles hit, some 14 in all.  The windows on those vehicles were also shattered.  Some items were stolen and the repairs will cost hundreds of dollars for each incident."A lot of people on fixed incomes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the temperature rises and more businesses, like movie theaters, are reopening San Diegans and people from neighboring counties are flocking to get a dose of normalcy."We sold out today which is great news for everyone, we sold out today very quickly." General Manager of Theater Box Donnie Eversole said.He said it was wonderful 'being home' back in the theater, "we haven't been in the theater for 90 to 120 days so it's like a new adventure."He said it helps that the week they opened, two blockbusters, Christopher Nolan's Tenet and Bill and Ted Face the Music, are screening.While they're capped at 25% Eversole said you can make sure you claim your seat by reserving online. They are working to add more showtimes while abiding by the new guidelines.Last time San Diego had sweeping reopenings, there was a huge spike in coronavirus cases. Eversole said they are doing everything they cna to prevent another spike, "every cdc guideline is followed to the letter, we do not bend, we do not break. We follow the rules because not only is our business affected, everyone else is and we want to make sure everyone is getting a fair shake and able to recoup some of the summer that's been lost."San Diego is the only lower tier county in Southern California with the ability to have so many re-openings, drawing attention from our neighbors.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher spoke at Wednesday's press conference, urging everyone to do their part to prevent another spike, "One of the most dangerous settings is indoor gatherings, it is house parties, it is people gathering together in an indoor setting and there really is no way for us to enforce that or prevent that other than the public's help and cooperation."He said if there are gatherings and another spike in cases, businesses, like Theater Box, could shut down once again. 1857
