SINGAPORE, June 29 (Xinhua) -- China's Yellow River Conservancy Commission (YRCC) received the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize for its outstanding accomplishments in integrated river basin management on Tuesday evening. The Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize is the highlight of the Singapore International Water Week, which is held here from June 28 to July 2. With its success in transforming China's second-longest river, the YRCC outshone 49 other nominees to become the third recipient of the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize.Accepting the award on behalf of the YRCC, Li Guoying, Commissioner of the YRCC said, "The YRCC is deeply honored to receive the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize for our efforts in revitalizing the Yellow River. We recognize that more can be done to enhance the ecosystem along a river that plays a vital role in China's economic development and holds an important position in the hearts of its people. This endorsement reaffirms our long-term commitment to nurturing and improving the quality of life along the river through sustainable river management strategies."The YRCC was empowered by the Chinese central government in 1999 to manage and integrate water allocation in the entire Yellow River. YRCC's innovative policies and solutions have brought about widespread and sustainable social, economic and environmental benefits. In just 10 years, the remarkable transformation of China 's second longest river by YRCC has secured water supply for over 100 million people, restored extensive areas of wetlands and biodiversity and protected some 90 million people living in the flood-prone areas of the Yellow River from devastating floods.

NANJING, July 3 (Xinhua) -- The population of China, the world's most populous country, is projected to reach 1.39 billion by the end of 2015, with those age 60 or over topping 200 million people, said Li Bin, head of the country's top population policy agency.Li, director of the National Population and Family Planning Commission, released these estimates Saturday during a speech at the annual conference of the China Population Association in Nanjing, capital city of east China's Jiangsu Province. The urban population is projected to be over 700 million over the next five years, for the first time exceeding the rural population, according to Li.She said the increase in the next five years would be based upon the nation's population momentum, which, according to her, would begin to decline after 2015.Population momentum is the tendency of a highly fertile population that has been rapidly increasing in size to continue to do so for decades after the onset of even a substantial decline in fertility.Chinese government statistics show China's population stood at 1.32 billion at the end of 2008, which was about 2.5 times the number in 1949 when the People's Republic of China was founded. To put a hold on the fast growth, the Chinese government adopted a one-child policy in the late 1970s. The policy had helped China's total population increase less than 40 percent between 1978 and 2008, whereas it nearly doubled between 1949 and 1978.However, during the next five years the development of China's population is expected to go through major transitional changes, Li said.China's first boom in its aging population is expected in the next five years, with roughly an average of eight million people turning 60 each year, 3.2 million more than occurred between 2006 and 2010, she said.In the coming five years, the ratio of the population aged 15 to 59 would peak and then slowly fall, whereas the population dependency ratio, a measure of the proportion of the population too young or too old to work, would rise for the first time after over 40 years of decreasing. In general, China would still retain the advantage of a plentiful labor supply and a relatively low population dependency ratio, she said.

URUMQI, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers were racing to evacuate more than 800 people still trapped by rain-triggered mountain torrents in a remote valley in China's far west Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region late Friday afternoon.Rescuers managed to reach the site in Kuqa County, of Aksu Prefecture, at 1:26 a.m. Friday, about 24 hours after rains and floods stranded more than 1,000 residents, construction workers and tourists in the mountainous area.As of 5 p.m. Friday, more than 170 trapped people, including 120 tourists and some 50 railway construction workers, had been taken to safe places. No casualties had been reported, said a spokesman with the prefecture's committee of the Communist Party of China. The locals dam up at a village of Alaer city in the upper reaches of the Tarim River, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, July 30, 2010. The Tarim River was hit by the largest flood in eight years on Friday. Some 100 more rescuers, carrying drinking water, drugs and food, had been sent to the site. The regional government had dispatched helicopters to drop food and bottled water to the trapped people, said the spokesman.Floods have inundated many roads, as well as damaged three bridges and 12 buildings in the county. More than 13,000 youths from the county were ready to strengthen the dikes to combat flood waters, he said.

TASHKENT, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday pledged efforts to enhance cooperation with Uzbekistan when meeting here with his Uzbek counterpart Islam Karimov. The two leaders also exchanged views on prospects of bilateral ties and on international and regional issues of common concern.Hu hailed the development of Sino-Uzbek ties since the two countries announced the establishment of friendly and cooperative partnership in 2004.China highly appreciates Uzbekistan's continued and firm support in issues concerning China's core interests, said Hu. China respects the independence and sovereignty of Uzbekistan, and will as always back its efforts in safeguarding stability, developing its economy and improving people's livelihoods, Hu added.Chinese President Hu Jintao (L) meets with Uzbekistan's President Islam Karimov in Tashkent, June 9, 2010. Hu noted that China has always attached great importance to developing Sino-Uzbek relations and has taken as guiding principles long-term friendship, mutual respect, mutual trust, and equality and mutual benefit.China will not alter its stance despite changes in international and regional situations, Hu said. The Chinese leader meanwhile put forward a six-point proposal for enhancing the friendly and cooperative partnership with Uzbekistan. He said that, first of all, the two countries should maintain high-level contacts to boost mutual understanding, including exchanges between heads of state, between parliaments, governments and political parties.Secondly, China and Uzbekistan should enhance energy cooperation. Both sides should well implement the Uzbekistan-China natural gas pipeline project, boost cooperation in oil and gas exploration and development, and speed up cooperation in minerals, Hu said.Thirdly, the two countries should expand cooperation in new sectors, particularly in high technology and new technology, and work to establish a long-term trading partnership, Hu said.Fourthly, the two countries should deepen security cooperation and take severe measures against the "three evil forces" of terrorism, separatism and extremism. Law enforcement and security departments in both countries should continue to boost two-way cooperation as well as cooperation in the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to safeguard peace, stability and security of the two countries and of the region, Hu said.Fifthly, the two countries should also strengthen people-to-people and cultural exchanges to consolidate the foundation for friendship, said Hu, who welcomed more Uzbek students to study in China.Sixthly, Hu urged both sides to intensify multilateral coordination so as to safeguard the two countries' common interests. The Chinese president spoke highly of Uzbekistan's efforts in deepening cooperation among SCO member countries, enhancing the internal construction of the organization and boosting the organization's international status during its SCO presidency. For his part, Karimov hailed Hu's visit on the eve of an annual SCO summit as an important event in Uzbekistan-China relations and a milestone in the development of the friendly and cooperative partnership between the two countries.
