NEW YORK, N.Y. - There is no secret ingredient at Enoteca Maria on Hyatt Street in Staten Island.But someone special is always in the kitchen. The restaurant closed its dining room with the rest of the city in mid-March.It seats about three dozen people in the St. George section of Staten Island. Since opening in 2007, it has featured a rotating special menu prepared by the women along with an Italian menu.It’s known as the Nonna Project, which is Italian for “grandma.”To create a revenue stream and protect the health of the grandmothers and staff, they have not reopened.The women head to the kitchen one at a time to make batches of sauce to sell on the restaurant website.Rosa Correa will share her recipe for her delicious sauce from Peru. Don’t forget the chilies.“Amarillo, onions, garlic, that’s it,” she said.Maral Tseylikman is from Azerbaijan. She says she misses the customers.“I do for you the best I can and you will enjoy,” she said.Owner Joe Scaravella hasn’t planned for a reopening yet. NEW ORLEANS — A Black man whose life sentence for stealing hedge clippers in a home burglary drew scathing criticism from the chief justice of Louisiana's Supreme Court has been granted parole. Louisiana's high court had denied release for 63-year-old Fair Wayne Bryant earlier this year for the 1997 burglary that netted him a set of hedge clippers. In dissent, Chief Justice Bernette Johnson said the habitual offender law under which Bryant was sentenced was a “modern manifestation” of Jim Crow era laws aimed at jailing Black people for simple crime. Conditions of Bryant's parole include mandatory attendance at Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and community service. 678

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- A United States Air Force Pilot was killed Wednesday morning when his F-16 Fighting Falcon jet crashed outside Las Vegas, the Air Force said. The pilot died when his F-16 Fighting Falcon jet crashed during a routine aerial demonstration training flight at 10:30 a.m. His name has not yet been released. An investigation is being conducted into the cause of the mishap. The team’s participation at the March Air Reserve Base “The March Field Air & Space Expo” has been canceled.  It is unknown how this accident will impact the remainder of the 2018 Thunderbirds Season.   674

NEW YORK (AP) — Gap Inc. is moving away from the nation's malls. The San Francisco-based brand was for decades a fixture at shopping malls around the country. Now it says it's closing 220 stores by early 2024. Back in August, the company announced its plans to close 225 stores globally.The parent company is also shuttering 130 Banana Republic stores. The moves announced Thursday are part of a three-year plan that will see Gap focus on outlets and its e-commerce business. Gap joins other clothing retailers in trying to reinvent themselves during the COVID-19 pandemic. The outbreak forced many non-essential stores to temporarily close in the spring and early summer.On Tuesday, the San Francisco-based company said they are "exploring is the possible closure of our company-operated Gap stores in the United Kingdom, France, Ireland, and Italy at the end of the second quarter in 2021."Gap Inc plans to shut down more Gap and Banana Republic stores amid the pandemic.By 2024, the company plans to close 350 mall locations in North America. 1053

Nestlé's Purina is launching a line of dog and cat foods that'll include insect and plant proteins.In a press release, the company said Purina Beyond Nature's Protein would come in two versions: one based on chicken, pig's liver, and millet, which is a small, round whole grain grown in Asia and Africa. The other will use protein from black soldier fly larvae, chicken, and fava beans."Every ingredient in our food serves a purpose. With our new Beyond Nature's Protein dry pet food, we are offering a complete nutritious alternative to the conventional dog and cat products, while taking care of the planet's precious resources by diversifying the protein sources," Nestlé Purina Petcare EMENA CEO Bernard Meunier said in the news release.
