With one week until election day, the campaigns for President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee are hitting the trail with full force, as the candidates and their surrogates crisscross the country to make their final pitch to voters.And based on Tuesday's campaign stops, it appears Trump is playing defense while Biden is playing offense.Trump has an extremely packed campaign schedule on Tuesday with three planned rallies in Michigan, Wisconsin and in Omaha, Nebraska — all states and districts that Trump won in 2016, and likely needs to carry in 2020 if he hopes to win again.On the Democratic side, Biden will be making two campaign appearances in Georgia — a state that has voted for a Republican in the last six presidential elections. However, polls show that that the Peach State is a toss-up this year, and a Biden win in what has been a Republican stronghold could cause Trump's electoral map to crumble.Top aides for the candidates will also be out in full force on Tuesday. First lady Melania Trump — who rarely appears solo on the campaign trail — will deliver a stump speech in the key battleground state of Pennsylvania at 2 p.m. ET. Pennsylvania is one of the "Blue Wall" states that Trump flipped in the 2016 election, but recent polls show the state leaning toward Biden this year.Last week, Melania Trump canceled a scheduled campaign to Pennsylvania because of a "lingering" cough following her and her husband's COVID-19 diagnosis earlier this month.Former President Barack Obama also returned to the campaign trail on Tuesday, attending a drive-in event in the key battleground state of Florida.While campaigning for Biden, Obama decried Republicans' attempts to dismantle his landmark legislation — the Affordable Care Act — while simultaneously promising a replacement plan that has yet to materialize.Obama also hit the Trump administration for their response to the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly for holding what proved to be a "superspreader" event while celebrating the Supreme Court nomination of Amy Coney Barett.“I lived in the White House ... Wreckage from a steamboat that caught fire and sank exactly 201 years ago has reportedly been spotted at the bottom of a Vermont lake.The Steamboat Phoenix sank on September 4, 1819 on Lake Champlain. There were more than 40 passengers and crew members onboard at 11 p.m. when the fire started.Passengers who were unable to board lifeboats as the steamboat caught fire were forced to jump into the water and cling to debris or swim for their lives to shore. One type of business was deemed essential at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic that helped families living paycheck to paycheck – pawnshops."This is actually our history," Andrew Charbonneau said as he showed off an Edison cylinder phonograph at his shop, Palm Beach Pawn King in North Palm Beach, Florida. Typically searching for precious antiques, Charbonneau said this year, treasure hunting took a backseat in the pawnshop industry."I think we're all in a situation we're not used to, so everybody is doing what we call [to survive]," said Charbonneau, who also owns two other pawnshops, American Gun and Pawn in West Palm Beach and Andrew's Coin and Jewelry in Delray Beach.Across his three shops, Charbonneau saw firsthand what the lockdown in March did to local families."We had a lot of nervous individuals that have never pawned before in their life, and they were in a situation where they had nowhere to go, no other avenues to obtain cash," he said.Some bank branches were temporarily closed, hours reduced in others, but those in the pawning business were open."The essential aspect of what we do was very important for the community because the bank will not lend you on your cellphone, won't lend you on your computer," said Charbonneau.The COVID-19 pandemic put thousands of people in Palm Beach County out of work.According to statistics from the state Department of Economic Opportunity, the city hit hardest was Boynton Beach. In just 30 days, the unemployment rate increased from 4.7 in March to 17.5 in April."They would come in and say, 'I lost my job because of the pandemic,'" said Bobby Gloyd, an employee at G & C Pawn Shop in Boynton Beach.Unemployment rates from the state show Delray Beach had the second-highest increase in unemployment within Palm Beach County, going from 4.2 unemployment rate in March to 15.4 in April. Riviera Beach was the third, jumping from a 5.5 unemployment rate in March to 15.1 the next month.Gloyd said that people pawn the items that hold the most value to pay their mortgages and rent."Gold is always good. It's easier to sell and also has a lot of value," said Gloyd."Family heirlooms, anything jewelry related that has emotionally passed down value, meaning sentimental value. We did see a lot of that. It wasn't so much about selling. They were still nervous about losing it because they didn't know if they'd ever be able to pick it back up," said Charbonneau.When those stimulus and unemployment checks did start coming through, pawnshops say business shifted to sales. They were selling laptops, gaming systems, anything that could help people get through quarantine."Everybody was looking for laptops, I guess when the kids were being homeschooled," said Gloyd."PS4 was one of the big things. If I had 500 of them, [they] would have sold within a week, at the time period," added Charbonneau.Musical instruments, tools for home improvements were all among the hot commodities. And then there were items people couldn't find at retail stores."Bike sales were very, very high. I would say that was a 75%-plus increase. Work out equipment again; we're not used to selling that. It usually sits on the shelves, so there was a lot of increases in fields that I would never project in the future will be the same,” said Charbonneau.Most pawnshop owners said people not only came back for their pawned items when they got their stimulus checks, but they also bought more."iPad air: a lot of people were looking for that," said Charbonneau."The newest thing is like sneakers. ... They've been probably easier to sell than tools. It's nuts," added Gloyd.With 2020 coming to an end, pawnshop owners like Charbonneau, who have been in the business for 40 plus years, say they could have never predicted business trends this year. Workers have a right to safety by law, but an advocacy group claims its new report proves those laws aren't being enforced.The National Employment Law Project (NELP) analyzed data from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) from April to early August and found more than 1,700 workers filed complaints, saying their employers retaliated against them for raising coronavirus safety concerns.NELP tells us they've even heard from workers who asked for masks and were fired. More than half of the complaints were dismissed without investigation, while 2% were investigated and resolved by OSHA.“Instead of an agency that's there to assure that workers have a safe workplace, it's there to assure that you know large employers that want to violate the law that they get off the hook,” said Debbie Berkowitz, Director of the NELP Worker Health and Safety Program.Berkowitz is one of the authors of the report. She worked at OSHA under the Obama administration. She says the agency should've acted with “emergency temporary standards” for safety during the pandemic.“But instead, the administration has done almost no enforcement in this pandemic to protect workers against employers that flagrantly violate the CDC guidelines, because they're just guidelines, they're not mandatory,” said Berkowitz.Berkowitz thinks there would be more complaints if workers felt protected.If you are punished for speaking up, she says you should still file a complaint with OSHA within 30 days. Even if it's dismissed, she's still advocating for people to share their stories.“We need to understand what working people are facing, especially our essential workers who are working outside of the home, and we need to make sure that we're protecting these workers,” said Berkowitz.In a statement to The Washington Post, OSHA said it's committed to these investigations.
